Donating YT 4000 Club Member | In general small dogs have their first heat between 5 to 7 months, 5 been about the earlier, so you girl is more or less in schedule, I recomend that you wait until she is done and then two more weeks, then schedule a spay, is very risky to spay a bitch in heat, she can bleed to death on the table. so unless she has had contact with an intact male and is at risk of an unwanted pregnancy, i would wait.. you can put a doggy diaper on her they sell them at the pet store and that will keep her from staining and over licking. if you have any questions please call your vet.. hugs, |

| You can get some diapers for her if the blood is getting everywhere. A member of YT makes and sells them! I have bought some belly bands ( for male dogs) from her and she is amazing, plus the quality is excellent!! Here is the link Washable and Reusable Dog Diapers by T. Bumpkins & Co. and Doggie Pee Pads Her screen name is 107Barney' Good luck, I hope once she is done with her cycle her spay her

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Welcome to Yorkietalk! I've never had a female either, and I understand your concerns. Lots of people like to wait till the first heat before spaying, and so now might be a good time to make an appointment. I just wanted to remind you that Yorkies don't always lose their baby teeth on their own, and many of us have the vet pull the remaining baby teeth during spaying or neutering. They have to be put out to do this, so that's a good time to do it. The double row of teeth can cause lots of dental problems later on. Miss Annie is so lucky to have you as a daddy!

| Hi, Lou and Miss Annie! I had two females (not Yorkies) who went into early heat...and it does catch you off guard a bit 'cuz they seem so young when that happens. Although I kept my females separated from the males, and was extremely careful when they went out to do their bit, I still ended up with two litters of pups 'cuz not everyone else was as careful...and males and females are pretty creative when females are in heat. If your little lady, Miss Annie, is outdoor trained and you do not have a fenced yard or outdoor kennel, you might want to be extra careful when she goes outside. Male dogs will be able to tell from farther away than you might think. You can also get 'visitors' at the door at all hours...in case you start to hear barking, scratching, whining and pawing... Glad you are here...would love to see pix of Miss Annie!

| It takes a couple of weeks for the heat cycle to end. Watch her carefully. A female dog in heat can get an infection called Pyometra. I had a little puppy almost die of it when she went through her first heat. Lack of energy, fever, thirst are some of the symptoms. It comes on quickly and requires prompt treatment. I'm not saying it will happen but I just want you to know to watch out for it. Hopefully she will go through her cycle just fine. |

| I had already had an appt for Furgie to get spayed and 2 days prior to the appt she went into heat. The still continued with the procedure...she did great. The vet did not charge extra for her being in heat. They said if she was a bigger dog it would have been more high risk. Good luck and welcome!!!!

| Welcome to YT. The diapers that everyone have suggested will save you a ton in cleaning your carpet and furniture. I would also like to add that male dogs can sense a female dog in heat from a long distance so please be extremely careful with her while taking her out to potty. Good Luck
