| Exercise - walking or jogging with puppy or adult? Hi I have a 4.5 month old yorkie mix. I have jogged him a few times he can really go! I was just wondering what all your takes are on how far or long you can exercise them. Also how long do you walk or run with adult yorkies? I hope to go hiking with him some day, but will put him in his backpack carrier if I need to for part of the way. |

| We usually walk a little over two miles everyday. Sometimes we go twice a day on weekends or in the summer when the days are long. Mine loves to walk and really enjoys spending time outdoors.

| Jackson can go go go all day long. He runs back and forth (between 18mph-20mph) in sprints for 30 mins straight, LOL. He also has walked up to 6 miles, but could probably do more. He also swims all summer long, about 4-5 days a week. As far as jogging, I'd be careful with a young pup when it comes to "forced" running (i.e. he's not in a yard by himself, running freely and by choice, etc) vs. jogging with a leash. He's still growing, so you don't want to hurt his growing joints. Know your dogs limits, caution with certain weather, give water when necessary, etc. Otherwise, I wouldn't really "limit" exercise per say, especially if he wants to keep going. It's good to start them young as a pup. Obviously, you couldn't have a 5 year old dog who's never been exercised in his life and take him for a 5 mile jog, lol, so you'd have to build up to it. But with a pup, you are starting fresh.

| Chewie loves to walk too. When the weather's decent and I have time, we go about 2.5 miles. Last fall we did a running program and worked our way up to jogging 2 miles (he could probably go farther, but that was as far as I could go!). He'll be two in April. When he was a puppy, we worked slowly up to the distance, adding just a block or two at a time.

| The yorkie will get used to how ever much the owner does if done gradually anjd they will let you know if its too much. We walk about 2 miles with ours and this summer we plan on doing trails and hiking, Ours love it and the exercise if good for us. MY Husband plans to jog with chachi and chachi will be able to do it. Jewels is smaller and less agile than chachi and we dont think she could keep up with that but she doesnt have any problem power walking and distances. We are doing marathon walking and jogging and there are some marathons where you can bring your dogs too which is fun

| Thanks for all your input. I appreciate it. I'm learning a lot here at YT.com. I love walking Theo. I think it's so important to exercise with your dog. A lot of us dog owners put so much into their dogs and can neglect ourselves. Exercise is good for our dogs and US! My Aunt forgets this and she does so much for her dog, even has dog walkers, but she doesn't exercise herself and she's very obese now. I'm trying to convince her to walk with her dogs more, but she won't really listen. |
