| Unknown Antibiotic Hello again. And I'm in trouble again. You all helped me about docking the tail of an 18 week old Yorkie; her breeder wanted us to bring her back a few days after we brought her home to dock her tail. She is now 5 1/2 months with tail intact! Atia now seems to have kennel cough; She is 2 pounds 11 ounces. Our vet is treating her with an injection of 0.2 Baytril and 0.2 Azium. She's getting a little better but by no means is she well. Her breeder wants us to return her for 5-7 days during which she will treat her with a drug called "Naxol" and claims that Atia probably has a type of kennel cough our vet would be unfamiliar with. "It is a European strain", she says. Our vet has not heard of "Naxol". The closest he could come was "Naxcel" which is usually used for UT infections. Atia may have a Russian sire; hence the European connection. I have pedigree papers in Russian but none of this is making much sense. When I googled "Naxol", sites came up using the cyrillic alphabet. Has anybody out there treated kennel cough with Naxol? If it is an eastern European drug, where do you think a breeder in Illinois may be obtaining it? Help! Our vet was neither pro or con--left the decision to us. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I got Cali at 9 weeks olf she is now 23 weeks old ans weighs 3.1 lbs.She has had 4 series of antibiootics and has now just started to cough a little less. I followed someone on YT's advice about a vaporizer which seems to have helped. I would be leary of giving it back to the breeder without knowing more. You may want to get a second opinion from another vet unless someone on here as some experience with it. Good luck. Where in Chicago are you located?

| I don't know what to tell you at all.....just trust your gut instint. Give the meds from your vet some time to work. then if they don't, and you feel confortable with it, i guess try your breeder.

| WOW!! If you are from Chicago, how does your pup have a father from so far away? That doesn't sound right....along with some other things as you already know. That is a very tiny Yorkie and I would be afraid of giving any unnecessary medication. Your vet is already treating her, maybe you should see if that works first. If you aren't comfortable that your vet is concerned enough, take the pup to a different one. I have no experience in kennel cough (thank goodness!), but I do hear that it takes a while to go away. The vaporizer does sound like a good idea....why don't you ask your vet what she thinks of using that to help your puppy? I hope she gets better quickly. |

| This breeder makes me raise my eyebrows. 1st example was the tail docking and now if I am reading right she is saying this is genetic? Kennel cough is most commonly associated with a bacterial infection caused by the organism Bordetella bronchiseptica. While it is hard to be certain in veterinary medicine when discussing statistics, it is estimated that 80 to 90% of the cases of kennel cough are due to this organism. The other 10 to 20% of cases are caused by a variety of other infectious agents, most of them viral. Kennel cough has been associated with parainfluenza virus, adenovirus and canine distemper virus as well as the Bordetella bacteria. Kennel Cough has a 3 to 5 day incubation period. You got your puppy at 18 weeks and now it is 5 months - doesn't make sense to use Russian Drugs on something the dog picked up here in the States. I could not find anything on merck's on this drug. http://www.merckvetmanual.com nor in my Veterinary Drug Handbook. I am not even sure if this drug is legal in the US. Of course I am not to comfortable with your vets response either. He/she is educated about these things, you are not. I really prefer a vet that will work with me and explain everything but give both sides of the issue. Maybe other members might have a take on this but if he can't find the drug and tells you it is your decision-I think I would be looking for another vet. I might be reading to much into his response but I think it is vital to have a good working relationship with a vet. As many members here know it might take different meds and you have to be extremely concerned with such a little one. Sorry wish I could have helped more.

| I would stick to what your vet gave you. I got Reeses two weeks ago and he he had kennel cough coming from the breeder's(another story, another time). He took Clavamox first with no help....and to later develop pneumonia, and now he is on Baytril and the cough seems to be getting better and better day by day. I have heard kennel cough can take weeks to months to clear up,,,,I leave a humidifier on for him while I am at work....to those who used the vaporizer, what did you use? Is it safe? Can I put it in my humidifier, or do I need to get a vaporizer??? |

| Ohhhhh boy. Of course you are all reiterinating what I needed to hear. A drug that only shows up on a Russian website is not going into little Atia. My husband spoke to the breeder yesterday about Naxol and directly asked her where she was obtaining it. She's an artful dodger when she wants to be, and he didn't get a direct answer, i.e., she suddenly claims she may have the spelling wrong although she gave that spelling to me and to him at different times. You've all really scared me about something else I "think" I know. At 2 pounds 11 ounces, is Attie concerned really small? Our vet thinks she will reach 6 pounds adult weight? Patti, I'm out in Lombard. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Lombard that's not too far! Are you going to the Dog show12/17 and 18th in Rosemont? Cali is almost 6 months and weighs 3.1 lbs so I don't know what she will end up at I hope at least 4. I ahve been weighing her every week and she is gaining about 1-2 ozs a week, which has slowed down from a month ago when she was gaining 3-4 ozs a week. I would highly suggest steaming her and getting the vaporizer my two have almost gotten rid of it after 3 months!
