| feeding amount...? I was wondering when it comes to the amount you feed do you go by the amount on the bag to be fed per day or not. I know pups need four feedings a day so I was just wondering if it says to feed a cup a day do u feed that in the four feedings and no more? I know with bigger breeds they don't seem to be full on what the bag says to feed at any age. Any advice will help

| I free feed mine always not everyone does, but that is my choice, a puppy eats very small amounts at a time, so i leave it available in case they decide to go by and get a kibble or 2...I have never had a puppy have hyperglycemia so it works for me.. good luck with your little one

| I know for adults, the portion size per serving as shown on the bag is more than needed. As for puppies I'm not quite sure. I'm sure someone here knows or can give you more input on the matter. |

| The directions on the bag is just an estimate and you should go by how active your puppy is and yes divide the meals out to come to amount mentioned..I had fed 3 times a day and it worked great for awhile but decided to free feed when she would not take time to eat...just a tad hyper. LOL

| The amount the food company suggests you feed should contain the amount of vitamins and nutrition a dog/puppy of that age/weight would need for one day. Some less active dogs may eat a little less and a more active dog may eat a bit more. For a puppy the daily amount should be broken up into the number of times you are feeding the puppy a day. If your puppy is still hungry after eating the recommended amount for the day it won't hurt to feed a little more but try not to over feed. |

| I never follow the bag guidelines. I always do less. A lot of foods suggest 1 cup - 1 1/4 cup for Jackson (16lbs) and I think that's insane. He'd be so fat! lol. He eats 2/3 cup of food per day (with a 430 kcal/cup food) and is very active. He gets 1/3 cup in the morning (along with wet food) and 1/3 cup in the evening (also along with some wet food - Weruva brand). Plus I try to factor in treats that he gets.

| Farley is 7 lbs and eats 1/4 cup in am and 1/4 cup in pm. I have measured his food since i got him at 7 weeks old. THis works well for him, if i free fed he would eat till he popped, he was like this the day i got him. I have never fed by the bag. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I feed Taycie 1/4 cup A.M and P.M with a couple of tablespoons of wet food mixed in. I like to add a little water too.

| I feed Charlie approx 1/4 cup in the am and 1/4 cup in the pm. Dog food calls for 1/2 cup daily total. He doesn't eat it all. I'm thinking of spreading it into 3 smaller amounts. I do leave some out for training though and he gets treats throughout day training too. I watch him very closely to make sure he has no signs of hyperglycemia. When he is very active outdoors or has a walk he eats more. If I'm concerned even though he shows no signs of trouble I hand feed him a bit or throw some on the floor which he will clean right up. He will be 17 weeks on Monday and was 2 lb 13 oz 4 weeks ago. Has vaccinations this week. I'm guessing he is 3 lbs something now. Doesn't feel underfed! Mother was 6 or 7 lbs, dad 4 lbs. |

| You cannot just arbitrarily decide how much you want your dog without taking into consideration the nutritional value of the food you feed. Some foods put a lot of fillers in and so in order to get the daily requirement of nutrition the company requires the dog eat more to obtain it. That doesn't always work well especially with small dogs. Most commercial dog foods put the daily required nutritional amounts in the food if only by adding vitamins and minerals that the dog requires to maintain life, not health. I would be very careful about withholding food and adding treats since they do not make up the needed nutrition. Many of the more concentrated foods require less feeding amounts because the food does not have the fillers that are in other foods. Of course each dog has different energy levels but there is a certain amount of nutrition that is required by each animal on a daily basis. Consider the amount of calories and vitamins and minerals your dog needs to maintain optimum health. Foods with a lot of fillers require that your dog eat more to obtain that minimum requirement. Dogs can exist on less but eventually the stress on cells and organs will take it's toll. I believe the original question was if the suggested amount should be divided into 3 or 4 feedings and that is correct for a puppy. You don't want to feed the suggested amount several times a day. If your dog does not want to eat as much as the instructions state then I would suggest you find a food that is more concentrated and requires less food be consumed in order to obtain the needed daily nutrition. |
