| Happy Ending For Jenny Whitby dog gets new leash on life Jenny to go home with new owners this week Rescued Whitby dog gets new leash on life.[/B] WHITBY -- Jenny, a 12-year-old Yorkshire terrier near death when discovered in an unheated shed in Whitby on Dec. 29, is leaving the Humane Society of Durham Region to go home with her new owners on Jan. 18. January 17, 2012 It really does get out to the public that they can make a difference and that just by making a phone call, you can do good. Ruby Richards, Humane Society of Durham Region WHITBY -- Three weeks after an abandoned dog was discovered on the brink of death in a Whitby shed, a happy ending is just around the corner. Jenny, a 12-year-old Yorkshire terrier rescued by Durham animal officials after a tip led to its discovery in an unheated shed in Whitby on Dec. 29, is going home with new owners this week. "She's doing a lot better and she's ready for a fresh start," says Ruby Richards, animal health co-ordinator with the Humane Society of Durham Region. The emaciated dog weighed less than six pounds and could barely move when discovered by animal cruelty investigator Debby Houghton, who described its condition as "horrific." It had lost a considerable amount of hair and there was blood coming from its mouth. Both its eyes were completely shut due to crusty pus, large amounts of pus were oozing from its ears and fur was tangled in its teeth. Shelter staff say Jenny has made a tremendous recovery since then, gaining about three pounds and currently showing no signs of abuse. While the dog received treatment at a local animal clinic, numerous adoption applications for Jenny poured in to the Durham Humane Society from across the province. "Because of Jenny's needs, we had very specific criteria we were looking for with her and that helped narrow down the options quite a bit," says Ms. Richards, adding that the new owners are a retired couple from Scarborough. "For people that did not qualify for Jenny in some way or another, we did try to tell them there was absolutely nothing wrong with their application and there were lots of other animals out there in need of homes." In addition to shedding light on the ongoing need for permanent homes for many animals, Jenny's case also helped highlight how important it is for members of the public to speak up about animal neglect happening in their community. "When we talked about the anonymous tip that saved Jenny's life and how important it was for those tips to come in, two days later, we got another anonymous tip that saved another dog's life," Ms. Richards says. "It really does get out to the public that they can make a difference and that just by making a phone call, you can do good." As a result of the several thousand dollars that was donated to the shelter to assist with Jenny's treatment, staff were able to use a portion of the leftover funds to pay for the second rescued dog to undergo a leg amputation. "People sometimes forget that this stuff goes on and when they're faced with it on the front of their paper or on their TV, it brings it home," Ms. Richards says. "That's crucial because if the public doesn't step up and help organizations like ours, then there isn't anybody that's going to be able to help these animals."

| Although I would have taken Jenny in a heart beat< Acouple had a senior girl at home that was shy. They brought her in with them to see about Jenny and the two yorlkies hit it right off. Even I have to admit that's perfect for her and yonger one would have ran circles around her like Andy. Let Play Lets play. Jenny will be going to her new home with an extensive wardrobe, bag of toys For everything she's been through she is one happy girl.
