Default Where to leave your Yorkie while on vacation

Where can you have your yorkie taken care of if you need to go away?

Just the thought makes me concerned, but some places Like Cruise ships don't let pets aboard.

We've never gone anywhere that we could not take our babies but at the same time, our vacations consisted with our own boating trips.

Fortunately I have friends and neighbors that would help if I should need to leave them. I've done the same for them, and they happen to have yorkies as well so they understand the breed. So I guess it's kinda a barter/swap thing.

Others, I have read, have chosen to board. I've no experience with this but if I were to do this, I would definitely find and research a place prior to needing to use them. Maybe try them out for a day from time to time to get your dog used to the facility and staff so when and if the time should come you need to board, it is not so traumatic. (??)

My 14 YO daughter does some dog boarding in the summer. Just for freinds/relatives. She's such an animal freak. I think the animals sense it in her.

There must be a relative that would love to have your furbutt for a week?

If you have no one that you would trust to keep the dog at their house or stay at yours I would suggest a few things:

contact your breeder if you have one, ask your vet, contact the yorkie club of NY, and post in the reginal section here (just network) ask those people if they know of someone that home boards a few small dogs at a time. My last breeder told me of a lady that used to breed and show yorkies that now just enjoys boarding them. she has three of her own and on any given day might have one to 5 extra dogs mostly yorkies but all under about 10-12 lbs. They have the run of her house, if they like some even sleep on her bed, and her yard is extremely secure. The majority of dogs that go there enjoy the heck out of it. Even dogs that are not very social seem to get into the swing of things in a day or so. She said in the 8 years of doing this she has only had to ask that two not be brought back. She only charges $18.00 a day, so check all your yorkie sources to see if you can find something like that. Also when it comes to friends they are not always the best if they don't know dogs, or their house and yard might not be secure. I have a friend that would love to take my dog, but he has an open concept floor plan with a staircase in the middle that has all open steps, I would hate the thought of my dog falling through one of the steps, just things to keep in mind.

I am fortunate enough to have a former babysitter that now house sits and dog sits. In addition, if she's not available I can board him at his doggy daycare place, and they do not cage any of the dogs. Someone sleeps at the place and the dogs are never left unattended...Rocco actually sleeps in her bed with her! Now is the time to do research in your area, and have time to test the person/place with your pup a few times before you actually need to go somewhere. Maybe a friend has a babysitter that is in college and can be trusted to house sit?

I don't go anywhere Callie can't she as never been left alone and really cant be now. I would never be able to have fun and enjoy myself with out her because I would be worrying about her the whole time plus she wont eat when I'm not with her. Vacations should be fun for the whole family and Callie is majorly part of the family.

Only once did I use a boarding kennel. They were great! I thoroughly checked every kennel in town and this was the only one I was comfortable with. They have a camera and you can check in online any time to see your baby while you are gone! They take them out 6 times a day and you can bring your own food. I packaged mine into daily baggies so they just had to read the bag and open it. I even had my own treats but they would have provided them. I didn't want them to have to worry about possible upset tummies along with the big change. We got to decide on which sort of room we wanted. Since I boarded two together, I took a Toddler Bed Room with a View. It was one of only a couple available that had windows looking outside. I figured they needed the distraction. They also had TV rooms but I did not think that was necessary. They had different sized rooms too. I picked a small one as mine were both small dogs. They had separate areas for big & small dogs so even though they had separate rooms, they also separated within the building too. I liked that so that mine would not be frightened by hearing the big dogs bark nearby.

They groomed them the day before I picked them up and they looked beautiful and seemed very happy. I was not crazy about boarding them, but was thankful that we had such a good experience and the place so obviously loved animals! It is called Wee Tuck 'Em Inn and Village Groom Shoppe, in Pace, Florida -- a VERY well-run establishment! Here is their link if you want to see what I'm talking about. http://wetuckemin.com/index.html I just checked and could not get the camera to come up right now bu it usually works. I look in on them sometimes for fun.

Normally, we are spoiled and my mom takes care of my pups along with her own. Mine love their "grandma" as much as they do me, I think. They are always so happy to see her. I bring the kennel out in the foyer and Ben races to get in by himself cause he knows he's going to grandma's! But thankfully, he is always ready to come home when I come to pick him up too. He will once again, get in the kennel on his own for the car ride home.

This is us. Luckily we have a travel trailer and they have their own space and items, so they're comfortable.

Because we have 7, and three are on special diets (all different) we dont go on cruises anymore, instead we have a motorhome so they can all go and I know they are taken care of. One of the bad things about having so many I think.

Well Katie Scarlett has only been with us for a little over 3 months but she has spent 1 night away from us. In our town we have a fabulous doggy daycare facility. It is like a little pet hotel and so nice. They groom there too. But it's a little house that has been set up into a pet hotel. During the day, they groom and do doggy daycare. The dogs have multiple indoor and outdoor play areas. They usually keep big dogs and little dogs separate. Of course Katie Scarlett has won them all over and she usually stays in someones arms almost all day. They throw a fit over here. Tee hee. They even have a training room where the dogs go in one or two at a time and are allowed to play with all the training stuff like the little ladders, hoops, etc. Of course, there is someone in there with them. Then at night, if you choose, you can board them overnight. Each dog has it's own little place where it can sleep. It is like little kennels, but they are very nice. Each has a comfy bed or you can bring your own. We take our own bed so she has her safe place. There is fresh food and water in there. And there are 2 people who stay there all night to keep an eye on the dogs. Of course there is a vet on call if an emergency were to arise. We love our daycare. We try to take Katie Scarlett there once a week or so in order for her to play and to socialize with people besides us. It is $11 a day or $18 overnight. I think they have packages where you can save some money if they stay multiple nights. Also if you do daycare 10 times in a row, the 11th session is free. And the staff is fabulous. We love it! So definitely check in your area and see if there are any facilities like this. I know you can board them at the vet too, but I don't know if I would like that as well. Just my personal preference though.

on my last vacation Teegy flew with me and came on vacation with me.
Had I the need to leave him I'm fortunate enough to have awesome dog friends I know and trust to take very good care of him while I'm gone. He loves them and is familiar with them and their homes and dogs and he's so not a fuss pot, he tells you when he has to go to the bathroom and when he's hungry and he'll even let you know he's ready for his bed

Ok, we all love to take our Littlies away with us, whenever we can!

All I would suggest to you, if you decide to take a holiday where that's impossible - is to make sure you try out whichever facility you choose, a long time before you go.

Someone staying in your home - your Littlie staying in someone else's - kenneling - at your groomers - anything - please try it for a night or two, so that you can iron out any problems which might arise, while you're still local.

There's no point going on holiday and worrying the whole time - it's worth getting the routine established first!! Sally + Harry x

We left Geno with my boyfriend's parents when we went on vacation. They have 2 dogs - the one is an older yorkie and doesn't like to be bothered and the other one is a 3 yr old morkie. Geno and the morkie would play but they would evenutally end up fighting. This I had not known at the time so I kind of try not to leave him there when I'm not around. I was suppose to go to Cleveland this weekend to visit a friend and his parents offered to watch him but told my boyfriend that I didn't feel comfortable with him staying there and he understood.

On Wednesdays, I take Geno to daycare. His first day is tomorrow! Little nervous! I have been in contact with the owner for over a month now and she said I can bring him tomorrow to play with another girl yorkie while I go to work. Plus this place is on the way to work so it's very convienant.

Just look around and research a lot. Boarding a furbaby can be tough so it's always nice to find a really good place to ease your worry. When we went away in October, I was a nervous wreck and really felt like I could not relax cause I was so worried about him.
