Hello all!

Tomorrow morning I am leaving my home on Georgia and traveling to Arkansas(this is where I attend college). What are some good traveling tips?

The trip to ga with my puppy was a nightmare. She laid in her crate and cried the whole way, about 1000 miles. What are some ways I can make this trip easier for her?

Also, since being at home for a month she has become attatched to my family and our other dogs. My dad says that she knows I'm her mama, but I feel somewhat guilty taking her back with me. I believe that she can sense we are about to leave so she has been whiny all day! Should I talk to my parents about her staying at home? I would hate for her to be lonely and depressed with just me.

Any guidance y'all have would help so much!

Tough decision. What do you think is best for the dog? Will you be able to spend time with her while at school, walk her daily, get her some playmates to visit with? I'd make that my guide. If she'd be locked up all day at school and then get little interaction while you study (or party!), it might be worth talking to your parents. But dogs can be a great stress reliever if you do have the time to spend with her.

As for the trip, consider getting an elevated carseat so she can see out the window if she wants. If she likes chewing, have some chew toys. I always bring Nutrical on trips with my dogs. If they get nervous and stop eating, it's a high-energy paste.

When I got Eddie, we took him on a long driving vacation. He whined at first but improved every day. Now he loves car rides.

I agree. Another thing to think about when traveling though is how you are going to take potty breaks. I've recently traveled with my two girls and the rest stops will NOT allow pets in the restrooms, even hidden in a bag. I was caught and told to READ THE SIGN. My girls are great travelers! Good luck with your decision; it will be a tough one.

Are you traveling by car? Alone? Maybe a snoozer type car seat where she can see you would be helpful. She's still confined, and safe but has more visibility. If you're like me, and have a small car, you may want something that collapses small so you have room for groceries and the occasional passengers.

I put Kaji's carseat in the front and turn off the passenger airbag. He can see me and he relaxes a lot more.

As far as leaving her at home with your parents... that's a tough one. Being in school is not easy, but I'm sure you can find the time and places you can take her to help stimulate her mind and keep her happy. Dog parks a few days a week might be fun, or get together with neighbors and have play dates with other pups her size. It can be done!

My daughter is only 12, so I have awhile before I have to figure out her college arrangements. But herr yorkie Jessie loves her. Jessie really hates it when she is not home. Jessie likes us all, and enjoys the other dogs, but she loves Sydney most. I am confident Jessie would rather be lonely at times instead of going weeks without Sydney. Take this for whatever it is worth if anything.

If it was me, I would take my baby with me. Give it a couple of weeks and see how she is.

But do make sure she gets her daily walks and I would recommend other, frequent dog interaction. How dog-friendly is the town you live in? Is there a dog park near by? Do you have other friends who have dogs? Just a start.

I think it's great you're allowed one! It is a huge stress reliever to have a cuddle buddy at home.

Gosh, this has all been super helpful! I chose to get her just recently because I no longer participate in any extra curricular activities where I have to be away for the night. My class schedule isnt that bad, classes start mid morning and end early afternoon then I do a couple of hours work for a secretary. In other words, she won't be by herself for very extended amounts of time.
I live in more of a town house than an apartment so she has plenty of room inside, as well as, a small backyard area, a park across the street, and an Iams dog park about 5 miles away.

Thanks for the traveling tips too. Since I'm leaving early in the morning, I won't have time to purchase a car seat. Will it be okay to crate her? I just don't want her roaming around my car. I kinda try to stop every couple of hours and let her walk around a bit. It's just the feeding and watering part that gets kinda tricky. She wont eat and if she does, she'll puke.

Well hello fellow Arkansas member! And looking at your location I see you are attending college where I did!

I am a proud alumni!!

As far as traveling, I would suggest a snoozer car seat also. My Mikki is not a good traveler and the snoozer has been good for her. She ends up sleeping in it most of the way.

As far as leaving her with your parents, that is something only you can decide. If you think you will not have the time for her then yes it would be a good idea. However, if you think she will be fine then I would take her. I would do what you feel would be best for her.

Get some nutrical for her, since she won't eat. I think she is car sick and a car seat would have helped . I have found they do better when they can see out. Sending good thoughts and wish you a safe trip.

She's super sweet and I can't stand the thought of leaving her at home. I just want to do what is in her best interest.

As of right now, she will be making the trip with me!

I chose to get her just recently because I no longer participate in any extra curricular activities where I have to be away for the night. My class schedule isnt that bad, classes start mid morning and end early afternoon then I do a couple of hours work for a secretary. In other words, she won't be by herself for very extended amounts of time. I live in more of a town house than an apartment so she has plenty of room inside, as well as, a small backyard area, a park across the street, and an Iams dog park about 5 miles away.
