Animal Smiley 049 Is one not enough?

Hello everyone: I have a 4 yr old female. I never intended to breed her and she has been spayed. I am thinking about adopting another furbaby. My question is, should I get another girl or should I get a boy? I really like little girls but don't know if she will get along with another girl. I need some feedback from you guys who have been here before me. Thanks so much. I love reading your posts.

I have actually never decided whether to get a boy or girl before starting to look for a fur baby. When I started looking for a companion for Brody, I just wanted a similar age, energy level, size, and personality and/or breed or mix. The first dog I found was a Yorkie/Maltie mix who was cute as a button and reminded me of my first Yorkie-Poo and Brody. He was apparently adopted while I was trying to find out if he was still available, and they never responded to my email...but I still have a soft spot in my heart for him. Then I found Mia. Brody and Mia are inseparable and were great friends from the moment they met.

I am certain you will find that 'perfect' addition, be it boy or girl, and even you may not know which it will be until you 'find' your new baby. Trust your heartstrings!

My Ziva is quite dominant and everyone suggested I get a boy. But we just really like girls - so I looked a lot and found Abby- not the best looking of the litter but a very sweet, laidback, loving yorkie with a charming silliness- she will not engage in Ziva's bossiness.
It has worked out very well!

I had decided to get a male when I got Morgan// I had read that males tend to be more affectionate than females but now after being on this site i dont think that it matters

WELCOME to YT!!
I have 2 yorkie girls and just got a yorkie boy a few weeks ago...Sadie, our first girl, was the only one for a little over a year. She is Alpha,,,I wanted another girl....got Lillie when Sadie was about 1 1/2 yrs old...Sadie DID NOT like her....I thought to myself....what have I done...Sadie is MY girl and the look in here eyes when I held Lillie just broke my heart...We were in love with Lillie and she wasn't going back. It took quite a long time for Sadie to warm up to her fursister...She would snap at her all the time...Lillie is a baby...still is to this day,,,very passive, and if she whelps for anything reason Sadie jumps on her...dont know why she does this....So when we decided to get another one I was on the fence whether or not to go with a male or female...I love them both but am partial to females...Hubby and I decided on a male...well let me tell you!! they get along GREAT! I think they know he's a puppy...don't get me wrong...if he sticks his nose where it doesn't belong they will snap at him!! Lillie started playing with him after he had only been here a little over a week...more and more each day...Sadie just stands back and watches....I feel, in our home, a male was a better choice.

I would look for a passive dog, and let your number one be the Alpha..I have always read that the opposite sex is a good way to go

If your girl gets a long with other dogs and like others dogs I would get a boy so you have one of each

I've had Baby since 2005. And I can now honestly say...one is enough. LOL

Rose Is one not enough?

Thanks for all of your responses. But I'm still not sure what to do. I am on Petfinder looking at all the boys. My little furgirl doesn't seem to like females that much. I don't want to get another girl just to have everybody in misery.
So like you said when the right one comes along, I'll know.
Happy Valentine's Day.

I couldn't agree with this anymore! We added a female to our family (after Couver had been an only child for 2 years...), and it was the best decision we ever made! He now has a companion and absolutely loves his sister. I feel better knowing he has a friend at home when I'm gone, and the bonus is I didn't lose my momma's boy... He is still very much about me, but has a companion to enjoy spending time with while I'm away

Well, if she doesn't get along with other females ~ then there's your answer.

We went with opposite sex because my male Westie didn't get along with other males! Breeder said male/female combo was good for novice multiple dog owners. And we really didn't have much choice. Ringo was good with females but not other males.

IF they don't get along - then everyone in the household will be miserable! We had a rough first month - then everyone settled down.

Good luck in your search.

Being newer to the world of Yorkies, I cannot offer as much knowledge as others. But if we were to get another Yorkie, I think I'd like another girl. I just love our Katie Scarlett so much, I'd love for her to have a sis. But a boy would be fun too! I could have my 'Rhett' then! Tee hee! I am just worried about the whole leg lifting thing when it comes to boys. I need to talk to more owners of boys and learn more about that whole part. I think if we did get another though, I would like to adopt a rescue and give it a good home.

I would take your girl to meet other dogs both male and females to see if she likes either. If she gets along with females I still would bring her to the meeting of the new dog before you bring the new one home. When I got my male I took my female with us and they got along from the start so I guess she picked out my next dog, not me. Good luck

I am now starting the search for a female companion for Jersey and I hope that it turns out just like your situation did! I want him to stay a Momma's boy!

OP I would look for a boy. I just think that the chances are better that she will get along best with the opposite sex. Good luck in your search!

I have 3 spayed female dogs and they all get along great. I think it's more about individual personalities than what sex they are. Our little Biewer Yorkie Sprite is the baby at just over a year old, but she has a gentle personality and loves to snuggle with our cocker spaniel Sophie who has a similar way about her. Playtime on the other hand is all about racing around with Suki, our Yorkie/Maltese mix who is more energetic. We have never had any behavior issues or problems between our 3 females and they will all curl up together, groom each other etc. When we were looking at choosing our little Yorkie we were careful to try to select for personality first. I just love our little Sprite, and really whether you choose a male or female you can't go wrong if you try to choose a pup that has a complimentary temperament to your other dog
