| Spaying Issues/Questions (Long) Hi, As I've stated several times, I fully trust our vet. However, I do have some concerns. I've seen many people here getting their females spayed at 3.5 months, 3 months, etc. My vet says he refuses to spay her until she is at least 4 months old and 3 pounds...and even then he would be doing it against his "better judgment". He wants us to wait until she is 6 months, because he said Yorkies generally don't go into their first heat until their 8th month or later (she's a yorkie mix, not pure), and he wants to pull any baby teeth that might be stubborn at the same time. He doesn't want to anesthetize her twice for no reason. He said every time a dog, especially a toy breed, is anesthetized it is a bigger risk than people think, regardless of their reaction to it other times. He added that pulling stubborn baby teeth is important for future oral health....which I understand. We do have a male dog in the house, but he is 11.5 years old and has been neutered for many many years now; he poses no threat. We don't take Bella outside because it's cold. She's not involved in any puppy classes with other puppies because I don't WANT her to be in any classes until she's had all of her shots including rabies, which will come at 6 months of age. To make a long story short, Bella really has zero chances of being impregnated. =/ So...should we wait until she's 6 months to spay her, as the vet has recommended? Lastly...we might be getting a Yorkie. He's not neutered and is a year old. We'd be taking him directly to our vet to be neutered the day we get him, and depending on time frame, he may stay the night there and be neutered the next morning. Either way, he wouldn't be in our house until he was neutered, so he's not a threat either. ...opinions? Last edited by MorkieMomma; 12-31-2011 at 07:14 PM. |

| I think it is better to wait until at least 6 months to get her spayed and your vet is very right about the teeth and baby teeth that haven't fallen out need to be pulled or it can cause problems. Is the vet where you would be leaving your male dog have someone who stays over night with the animals? If not I would very much not feel comfortable leaving him there over night. Also don't forget to get blood work before any surgery.

| Sounds like you have a conscientious vet I wouldn't spay a yorkie before 6 months of age and agree with your vet that its better to wait so if puppy teeth need to be pulled, it can be done at the time of the spay. ZoE was spayed a week before she was 7 months old.

On the male being neutered right away not being a threat. If I'm not mistaken they can still be fertile for a couple months after the neuter. Much like a human male who has a vasectomy you need to be very careful for awhile. I would ask the Vet about this. I could be wrong but this is what I learned.

| I think spaying later is better, 8-12 months...

| I agree. I always wait until their teeth are through coming in. That way you can have any retained baby teeth removed during the spay.

| My vet will not do a spay until they are over 6 months old. Rosie was 7 or 8 months old when her spay was done and Mikki was over a year old. If it was me I would wait and follow the advice of my vet.

| Thank you for all of the input, everyone, it's appreciated. After discussing this with my husband, and all of you, we have indeed decided to wait until she's at least 6 months old. THANK you for the information regarding male puppies spermies being 'active'? lol after their neuter; I had no idea that was even possible, since the 'sacs' are removed, aren't they? Brussels didn't have any macadamias when he had his done if I recall; just his cashew. Either way, we will be taking that into strong consideration when (and if) they play and interact. I still do not know if we are going to be getting this other Yorkie; it wasn't planned at all. Thanks again for all the great advice. Last edited by MorkieMomma; 12-31-2011 at 09:02 PM. |

| I neglected answering a question. Yes, there is always someone at the vet's office. They're not a vet, but a vet tech. They're only there to keep an eye on and take care of the animals who are ill or in boarding. I (assume) they call the actual vet if one of the animals in their care needs attention. They don't accept pets during that shift, and the office itself is locked up (closed). There's an after hours emergency veterinary clinic that they work in cooperation with, though...separate location. |

| She will be fine if you get her spayed at 6 months. I had 2 pups in the house male/female and I had them spay/neutered the same day when male was 7 months and female was 6 months and it worked out for me and the female didnt go in heat. They both had baby teeth pulled at that time too
