Petzlife Dental Spray

My 2 yr old girl Baby has really bad breath.I had her teeth cleaned and some baby teeth pulled about 8mos of age but do not brush her teeth at home.The new groomer I use has an option of teeth brushing and after reading some of the threads I have a feeling my YT friends would advise to do this.I also saw where some people use petzlife oral spray and I just ordered some.Do i need her teeth cleaned before starting to use this. She is due for 2yr old shots in Feb. so I guess I can ask her vet if she needs a teeth cleaning.Should I also use on my new 4month old marley.Do You just spray in their mouth and thats it?

Yes, as you guessed, you will need to brush both of your little one's teeth. It is good to start out when they are puppies. They may not always like it, but they will be used to having them brushed as much as they can be used to something like that. All of the sprays in the world will not remove tartar without brushing as well. That is just my opinion though. It may help with the breath issue. I have used both the Petzlife gel for brushing and the spray. In fact, I do still have some. I can't use the gel anymore. It makes mine spit up.

Are you sure she had a teeth cleaning, or just teeth pulled? Rarely do vets give an actual dental at that age. But it is possible.

No, you do not need a professional cleaning before applying the Petzlife. I like Petzlife -- lots have had great results with it. It does contain some alcohol which some are uncomfortable with, but I'm not sure it's enough to worry. Either way, I do use it on occasion, like when we are spending the night somewhere else and don't brush for the night, I'll use petzlife instead.

Jackson was a toothbrush hater for a long time. It was such a struggle that I had basically given up and managed only to brush his teeth when he'd get in the bath tub every week or two.

He had to have a dental last month due to another tooth issue (over-bite, had a vital pulpotomy on his canine tooth) so got them cleaned while under. They weren't terrible but did have some tarter build-up on all of his canine teeth. Anyways now they are shiny and white and perfect and I plan on keeping them that way and hopefully not needing for a long time/never needing another dental (at least that's my goal).

So anyways, after the procedure on his mouth, we weren't allowed to brush for two weeks so I took advantage and every night for those 2 weeks, we would go into the bathroom. First couple of days, he'd just go in there and get a treat. Then I brought out the brush, introduced him to it, let him sniff, etc. Eventually he had started opening his mouth when he saw it. I would lift up his lip, get him used to me touching around his face, etc, and he'd get a treat.

Now he's SOOO good at getting his teeth brushed. He comes into the bathroom with me every night, it's his little routine and he doesn't even put up a fuss. I wouldn't say he enjoys it but he tolerates it and that's what is important!

I bought CET beef flavored toothpaste which he seems to like and a CET finger toothbrush (which I find a bit easier to brush with).

Btw, as an FYI, most vets follow the 3 year AAHA veterinarian vaccine protocol now.... at 2years old, she should not really need any more shots, unless you do the extra things like bordatella. But vaccinating every year is not recommended and I would never do it. I like Dr. Dodds protocol.

I did not know about the vaccine thing I just assumed they needed shots every year.So apparently I need to discuss this with my vet when I bring my baby Marley in to get spayed.She is going in middle of feb. will be 6months old so what vaccines are recommended yearly I would like to know this.

No problem! A lot of people think that. And a lot of vets ARE still giving them yearly. It's completely unnecessary though.

As far as Jackson, he received DHPP at 8 weeks, DHLPP at 12 weeks (but had a reaction to the 'L' - never will he get it again), DHPP at 16 weeks, then rabies at 6 months. At 1 year old, he had the DHPP booster as well as rabies booster.

But from here on out, I may not ever give him anything else except rabies as required by law every 3yrs in MD. He would be due for DHPP at 4 years old according to my vet, but it's not the law, and I may opt to titer instead.

If you don't vaccinate, your vet will probably want you to test the level of antibodies in the blood. Since this is more expensive than the vaccines, many people just do the vaccines, but that's not a good idea. Joey was good on his last titers test so he needed no vaccines, but so much of this depends on your life style, and what your dog may be exposed to.

I’ve been using PetzLife for about 5 years and Joeys vet says his teeth are exceptional, especially for a Yorkie, he still doesn’t need his teeth cleaned.

When I bought the gel, it said you weren't supposed to brush with it, but just rub it on their teeth and brush the tartar away at a later time. Some people say that their petzlife says you can brush with it, so I don't know if they've changed their formula, but I wouldn't want my dog to swallow much since it does contain alcohol. I use the CET toothpaste, and I prefer the petzlife spray, it's so much easier to apply in my opinion, but I'm in the minority on this.

Oh thank you, I feel better now! Someone did do a survey about which do you prefer the spray or gel, and only a couple of people said the spray, so I hate to recommend it without the information that most people here like the gel. I just lift their lip and give a quick spray on each side of the mouth. With the gel, you have to squeeze some in your hand, and I never get the right amount and then rub it on their teeth, and then you have a blob of gel in you hand.

If I brush her teeth with the gel, she spits up. I mostly quit using it. I think I'll try rubbing it on her teeth though and using the spray as well. But we'll continue brushing with something else. I do like the spray, but it isn't enough to fight tartar. She has never had a breath problem. At least, since she was teething.
