| Help with rescue pup We adopted 3 months ago an 8 month old male neutered at the time he weighed just 3 lbs. He is a little guy. His previous owners did nothing with him, no training, no potty training etc. We have for the most part got the house breaking part down and he is learning to stay in his crate without much feedback. Our problem is that he stays in his crate during the day and uses the bathroom in it. We have tried to section off his crate to only a small portion as I have been told helps, we have limited his water and food intake at night. We have tried most techniques and yet he still will pee in his crate, on his bedding or out the side. It is like he has no idea not to use the bathroom where he sleeps. We are at a loss at this point, I am afraid he has always been locked up in a crate and has just learned to use it and now that he is almost a year I am not sure how to get him to think and do things differently. Any advise would be helpful, Thanks. |

YT 1000 Club Member | Congratulations on your new baby boy. Is it possible for you to create an area (with some gates) outside his crate so that he has a bit more space? This way you can leave the crate door open for him to go in/out as he pleases. Lay down a wee pad in the area outside the crate and teach him to go there...??? Just a thought.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I know he's tiny and needs several small meals during the day but there still needs to be a cut off point for both food and water at night. One that allows him to have plenty of time to empty his bowels and bladder before putting him to bed each night. It is not too late to get him potty trained, but for me cage training is key to having a well trained dog. I only allow them to have run of the house when watched and they have my full attention. Until I am 100% sure that they are potty trained and can be trusted with full access to the home with no surprises they spend a lot of time in their cage. Napping, after play time, night time, trips to the store, and even when I'm busy and cant watch them. It doesn't take much time at all before they see their cage as their own safe haven. Cage training is a great tool when uses properly, but it takes time.

| I guess the issue is not giving him enough room inside or outside his kennel, or allowing him to empty his bladder before bed. When he is allowed to sleep in the bed he goes all night with out even needing to go outside, but place him in his kennel at night and some day times and he will 95% of the time go to the bathroom in it and then lay in it. He has even peed on his little bed we bought him for his kennel. OUr other puppy has never used his crate to go to the bathroom, its his place to sleep and his little safe cave. However, Giz just doesnt seem to have this concept and I believe its from the 7 months with his previous owner. So here is my question, if he does not understand that his crate is for sleeping and not the bathroom how do we change this mind set?? |

| You say the previous owner did nothing with the puppy. He probably learned that peeing and pooing in the crate was all that he could do. If he was locked in a small crate as a puppy he did not have the ability to hold his urine or poo at that age so he went in the crate and now he thinks that is how it is. Despite what people tell you a young puppy will soil a crate because they do not have the control an older dog has. I would get him an X Pen and put down pee pads on one side and his bed and dishes on the other. He needs a new start. His mind is set on how to treat the crate. Training him to use the pee pads and keep his area clean in an X Pen would be much kinder than shutting him in a crate for hours at a time. |

| @gracielove, I so agree with you...... I really appreciate your helpful words. I do have a pretty large crate that he was in when we first got him. He had his little bed at one end and plenty or room at the other with pee pad. He still peed on his bed :-( and just tore up the pee pad :-) I feel like we have tried everything, maybe because he was locked up and learned to use his crate that it may take a very long.....time to change his thinking on it. I just wish he understood he didnt have to lay in it But I think I will try the large crate again this weekend. Thanks again! |

| Have you tried putting the pee pads in the frame they sell to put them in? Gracie thought pee pads were great fun to play with until I put them in the frame that holds them in place and then she stopped playing with them and used them as her potty instead. They sell the frame at most Walmart's. |
