| I am New to Yorkies, & YT. Hello! hi guys, been browsing around these forums for a few weeks & decided what better time to start contributing. I just recently took home my first little yorkie puppie, and she has been nothing short of an absolute pleasure. We took her home at the early age of only 8.5-9 Weeks old. I had heard that that was too early, but we had no choice. She is now about 11 weeks old, and has only been to the vet once so far. (Next appointment is January 7th) She got weighed in at 1.5 pounds, and got a shot (she squealed and cried but got over it quick) She has yet to receive her first bath, as I am nervous of her face and ears. The vet didn't inform us of any allergies, but I am a bit suspicious because I heard small Yorkies are known for having certain irritations and allergies. (she's been rinsed/washed wi water, but not with soap or shampoo yet) Which brings me to my first question; What's a good shampoo or washing soap hat I could use that would be delicate enough for her sensitive skin and coat? And what is the best technique for a 2 pound young pup to endure? I hate to see her shiver, but I know it's gonna happen. Also, I noticed a bit of a bald area spot on the top of her head. It's nothing to major, but it almost looks like it could be the way her hair is parting/ different angles. I know she scratches and it he's a lot and I have been on the lookout for any irritations or stabbing but luckily have not seen any on her. Also little baldness near her ears, right behind but no markings. She is young and full of energy. She likes to prance back and forth and be fed her hard dry chow food via me rolling it on the floor or in the palm of my hand. She is getting better at eating it from the bowl, and water was tough at first but she drinks it sometimes while eating. I always have it out for her if she wants it, like I was told to do so. When she plays she gets a little aggressive and bites a lot. I don't scold her other then simply saying NO! and changing my voice tone. Sometimes I fake-cry to show her she can hurt me sometimes lol. The biting I hope is a phase and justly full, but I'd like to nip that in the bud so she can be a sociable adult. I realize I'm all over the place in this post so I'll try to wrap it up. As you can tell, I am a new & first time parent, and I am enjoying it so far. I assume this is similar, to an extent of what it's like to have and raise a child haha. In other words she's a lot of work, but I love it. Me and my girlfriend provide lots of love to her and believe she is comfortable and loves us too (hopefully!) I welcome any comments, suggestions or anything anyone has to contribute to me and my newfound parent hood. I look forward to interacting with the users here and networking some great information for the sake of our gorgeous little pups! Thanks guys! And I will update this thread with some photos of little Gia when I am at my computer later! have a great day and great new year!:anima l36 |

| Hello and welcome to you and Gia. Regarding the hair on her head and what looks like a bald spot, it is probably just the lighter hair coming in. My Sophie Kate had a dark little head when I got her and it looked like a bald spot but was actually her hair. I am sure you will get all kinds of suggestions for your questions, Yorkie Talk members are good about sharing.

| I wanted to add about the biting, a suggestion I used was make a whimper or crying sound when she bites- something that alerts her that biting is not acceptable. I believe puppies who stay with their Mom a little longer are taught this by Mom, those of us who have Yorkies who did not have that advantage have to assume the roll of "Mom" I would love to see a picture of Gia.

| Welcome to YT. For shampoo, I like the Bio-Groom Fluffy Puppy shampoo. You can get it online. It's very mild. I used it on my puppy when I got him at 10 weeks old. I also would recommend the Bio-Groom ear clear so you don't get water in the ears after the bath. It is a great idea to get Gia used to brushing her teeth early too. We use CET dental toothpaste (love the vanilla mint flavor) and the CET has a small size toothbrush for small dogs her size as well. You can find the CET stuff online as well. Good luck with Gia.

| You say you had no choice but to get your puppy but at 8 weeks and I'm not sure I understand that because everyone has a choice. One of the things that puppies can have a problem with when taking them away from there mothers before 12 weeks is biting. I would use a puppy shampoo and maybe have the vet look at the bald spots and where she is scratching. All dogs can have allergies and not all yorkies have allergies.

| Hi and welcome to YT. It sounds like you are on your way to being a great dad to Gia. Hot Rod was all of 1.57 lbs when he came home to us. I was a total wreck handling him cause I thought he would break. Hubby had to to do the honors of bathing him for the first couple of times. He did it in the hand sink with the bathroom door closed and the heater going. (Our bathroom is cold and we normally turn the ceramic heater on when we shower in the wintertime). I felt more comfortable with him doing the bathing as his hands are much larger. You may also want to run some towels thru the dryer just to warm them up. Hubby did use the blow dryer on a warm setting and ran it over him very quickly to dry him off. Hot Rod had very sparse hair on the top of his head at this time also. It looked like he had a bald spot as well. It was just that his hair was so thin and his hair was already changing-he had the beginnings of a white spot going on. We used Bio Groom puppy shampoo. As a matter of fact, I still use it around the face area and my 2 are 4 and 3. Yes, yorkies can have allergies, but don't look for them before it happens. It will drive you nuts. lol There really is no way to tell until your little one starts to have symptoms. Hot Rod was 15/16 weeks when we got him and he was already flakey. It took several months and 2 vets before we were given a medicated shampoo and conditioner that help tremendously. As it turns out, he's allergic to chicken so I suspect that had a lot to do with it also. Also, for brushing teeth, you can also try gauze on your finger so she can get used to it if a brush is too big. Best of luck to you and Gia. Can't wait to see pics.

| Congratulations on your new puppy. You will get lots of different answers here but I'm sure everyone has their own views on what works bet for their pups. With hair missing behind the ear I would suspect it is from scratching. Could be dry skin or it could be allergy to food or maybe the pup had fleas before you got him. There is a lot to read on diet in the health and diet area. I tend to go for as close to nature intended for my animals so I use mostly all natural products. Have been using this for shampoo and conditioner with great results: Yorkie Splash and Yorkie Shine | Yorkie Shampoo and Yorkie Conditioner Does not hurt the eyes and leaves the coat clean and smelling great for days at a time. Try to avoid getting water in the ears when bathing and swab them out after your done with a cotton swab just to make sure they are dry. Don't go deep into the ear canal. Using a good conditioner on the coat may help with the itching. Go through the coat with a flea comb just to make sure you have no sneaky pests lurking in there. You can't always see them but a flea comb will detect them easily. Yorkies are terriers and can sometimes have a more excitable nature. If biting is an issue try not to get the little one all excited as this just makes matters worse. I know it's hard not to play tug or play chase with a puppy but you don't want to entice him to bite either. I had to try to keep my little barracuda quite calm as a puppy because she loved to use those razor sharp little teeth to play with. It's really important that they learn from an early age that mouthing and biting is a NO NO! It's usually easier for them to learn this from the mom and litter mates but that is not possible with your little guy since he had to leave them too early. If he starts to gnaw on your fingers or hand tell him NO and stick a stuffed toy or chew toy in his mouth to show him what IS acceptable to chew on. Best wishes on your new baby. Yes, it is a lot like raising a baby except your potty training should be completed much sooner than a human baby! |

| Thanks for all the great info guys. She's growing and learning every day it seems. Vet appointment #2 is only 2 days away and im a bit nervous to say the least! I hope she is alright with the multiple shots she will receive. Just today she got a small piece of tape caught on her fur near her mouth (she tried to bite it) and listening to her whimper as i tried to remove it with the least possible pain to her was heartbreaking! But she got over it, like they always do lol. I just pray that the vet has only good news for us, and that she is a healthy happy pup! |

| Gia is so cute! I have a lot of nylabones around and replace the bone for my fingers. Abby is 6 months and teething and she knows they are for chewing.(she loves the blue nubby one) I also braid and knot strips of fleece great for keeping the teeth clean and fun too! You have a choice over which shots to get and when- It might mean an extra trip to the vet but the reaction can be less, and you can narrow down which one bothers her. Abby did great but Ziva had awful reactions. |
