| Newbie saying Hi! Hi, I've been lurking around for about a week trying to get up to speed on the site. I must commend everyone here. This is a great site, nice people, and full of valuble information. Anyways, A little Bio: Hi, I'm Rob I live in Duluth, Mn. with My family. Wife, 3 Kids: 14 Yo Daughter, 11 YO Son, and 2 YO Yorkie. We adopted a Yorkie (Bradley) 13 years ago, at the age of 2. Sadly, We lost Brad in July. After 6 Mo's We started looking for another Yorkie. And We found Handsome Andy in a shelter about 90 miles from here. We've had Him for about a week now, and love the dickens out of Him already. We have a few issues to deal with. Any advice/tips would be great. We live in the country on a 5 acre lake lot (low traffic, dead end road). Andy LOVES to be outside. I don't think He's spent much time outside. So, with the winter season, and His inexperiance, We limit Him to 5 mins or less. He's met the neighbors Chesapeak, and shows no fear. Could be good/bad? Seems Andy's previous parents had Him wear a belly band, and used pads. We're in the process of training to go outside. It seems to be going fairly well, except for #2. He's found a spot in our Sons room that He prefers better than outside. A little scolding, and taking Him outside is the process we're on now. Hopefully we can make some progress on this one. I'd love to move on to praise. But He's not making much progress yet. He seems to like the bathroom garbage can. Anything in there, seems to end up in the living room. I think we're making some progress on this one. I'm a little conserned about His diet. THe adoption form stated that He was eating Fromms. We've always fed Iams. He's adapted well, and seems to be eating well. Our Bradley was 10-12 lbs (he always gained a lb or 2 over the winter mo's) While Andy is quite a bit smaller. 6-7 lbs is my guess. One funny quirk that Andy has shown is that He's latched on to Me. Follows Me around the house, prefers My lap. While Bradley was that way with My Wife. ( I don't think it bothers Geri, hard to tell) It's almost obsessive. I can't sit down without Him on My lap. Not that I mind! I cannot for the life of me, get him to play with a toy? Not a big deal, but odd? I know Andy has had a pretty traumatic month, or so. So we're cutting him some slack. He's very intelligent, and I thinks we can make progress on all fronts. Well instead of typing a novel, I'll end here. With Our newest member of the family, I'm sure I'll be frequenting the site. Thanks to all that contribute here. I've learned a lot, and will keep searching old threads to keep learning. Nice to meet You all, Rob & Andy |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome to YT. Sorry to hear about Bradley. Congratulations for adopting Andy. It sounds like Andy just needs a little time to adjust and some retraining. I took in a senior yorkie male almost 2 years ago and he immediately attached himself to me but learned when I wasn't around to hang out with my husband. Can't wait to see pictures of Andy and hear of his progress.

| I imagine it is very traumatic for Andy. Although he may appear to be adapting well I'm sure his little world is upside down right now. It's quite a process to change a dog's potty habits when it is in it's own home but poor Andy is trying to learn new people, new house and new rules all at once. It sounds like you have got a good little guy there that is just confused and trying to adapt to his new world right now. It can take any where from two months to quite a bit more for a dog to accept and realize that this is his new home and new people. He may be a bit obsessed about hanging out with you because for some reason he finds you to be a source of comfort and security. It may be once he is fully adjusted he will not need you quite so much though it certainly sounds like you have a friend for life! My previous dog also loved the bathroom waste basket. We had to keep it under the vanity behind closed doors for quite a while. For him it was one of those temptations that he could not resist when we were not home. He loved tissues and cotton swabs! Sounds yucky to us but to some dogs it's like an open treat bag! Double yuck! Thank you for adopting this little guy and giving him a loving home. I hope you and your family have many enjoyable years ahead with your new friend, Andy. Oh, by the way some dogs feel very insecure when they are going poo. That may be why Andy has found a quiet place away from everyone to go. Another thing that should resolve as he feels more secure. Just praise him real well when he does go poo outside. Some dogs are more likely to go poo after running so taking him out for a good brisk walk or a run may help to get him to go potty outside when you want him to. Of course timing is everything but once you get him on a schedule things should go more smoothly. |

| Welcome to YT. I'm sorry about the loss of Bradley. It's tough to lose them. I would limit his indoor space via baby gates, or even a playpen if you cannot watch him. If you feed him on a regular schedule, then you should learn when he needs to go potty and take him out regularly. Praise him royally. Yorkies respond well to praise, as well as a tiny treat upon going in the proper place. I assume you don't allow him to run freely outdoors, but with a leash or in a fenced yard. Predators, such as hawks and coyotes, prey upon little yorkies, such as the one you now have. Andy is about half the size of your previous yorkie. As far as his attachment to you, I wouldn't worry about that so much. It may change, in time, but yorkies pick out their person and there is little that can be done about that. Whoever takes him for his walks, feeds him, plays with him, and takes him out to potty will usually reap the reward of being his best buddy. I was going to add that Fromm's is an excellent food. That is one of the two that I mix. The other is Natural Balance. It really is a much better quality of food than Iams.

| Thanks for the warm welcome, and advice. Especially the training link, Karen. We're still getting used to each others shedules, so I'm hoping the potty training will improve as the month goes on. We do let Andy outside alone during the day, not at night though. Our Vet said not to worry to much about daytime sky predators, it's the Owls we need to worry about. Although it took 4-5 mo's to even consider another dog. We're very happy with Andy. He's such a happy, laid back Guy. (maybe why he hasn't played with toys yet?) Both the Vet and the Groomer commented on his great manners. Here's a pic of Our new addition: (if I did this right) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ctureid=114857 |

| He is adorable. Very cute yorkie! I would really urge you not to let him out by himself, even during the daytime. I assume you have hawks there, too. Owls, hawks, and coyotes are a huge danger for yorkies. There have been a number lost to these predators over the years here on YT. Just a word of warning. He is much smaller than your previous yorkie. I personally know two people who have lost yorkies to coyotes. One was taken at night. The other two were taken together by coyotes in daylight. I saw a huge owl across the road from our house in the last week or so in the daylight. He was just sitting in a tree waiting. I see hawks practically everyday here and I have to be out with mine, even though we have a fenced yard. This is just a word of warning. I have always believed it is better to be safe than sorry. Also, if you don't go out with him, then you won't really know if he has pottied and maybe that is why he is leaving presents in the bedroom.

| I appreciate the advice Karen, and I think You might be right about going outside with Him. I'll give that a try. One nice thing about our area is that we are on a point of a lake. Three sides covered by water, no escape route for any animal. It's even rare to see deer here. I've never seen, heard any varmint. But I do know We have Owls around. I think Your advice has sunk in. I'll be going out with Him from now on. Thanks again for the warm welcome! |

| Owls usually are the largest sky predator in certain areas but a hungry hawk can do some damage with it's talons even if it can't pick up it's prey. Owls are also out before the sun goes down and for at least an hour or more after it comes up so stay close to the little guy. Many here have heard way too many horror stories about Yorkies and other pets being horribly mangled by birds and other animals of prey. If anyone has suspected such a thing could happen they would never have let their little ones out. I had a huge owl fly over my head and land on a branch just a few yards in front of me one sunny morning. I never knew such huge birds existed until I saw that guy! He gave me the definite impression that he was letting me know that he was in charge around here and that any little animals I might want to let outside would be his mid morning snack! |
