Hyperactivity....ugh. Hi everyone! I am a new member today, and I am a proud mom of Mason, a 7-month old boy yorkie. He is absolutely precious and he is my whole world, but he is soooooo active and rambunctious!!! As soon as I get home from work, he is ready to play and when I am too busy to give him attention, he starts barking excessively. His favorite play is fetch, and he wants me to throw his Kong ball for hours!! If I get tired and stop throwing, he will go hide his Kong in my shoes and he will bark at it until I get up and go get it. This puppy does not give me a break! this is daily, mind you. When I am just sitting around, he can NEVER sit still on my lap. Will his energy eventually go away? I am wondering if this is his personality (which is permanent), or his young age (which is temporary). Please help!

I hope someone can answer your question. My yorkie will be 7 months on march 11 and she never stops. She is constantly running aroung, following me, biting me, the cats and anything else that moves. I hope she out grows this. I love her to death and don't mind it but my husband absolutley hates it!!

I am going through something similar and my Yorkie just turned 1 year. He has been that way since day one. I try and walk him every day for about 45 minutes. When I get home he likes to do the same thing, run around play fetch with various toys. I started buying him rawhide strips (not the ones that look like cigars) the flat kind that are about 2-4" by about 6-8" so I can hold on to one end and let him chew and tug. This seems to satisfy the need to chew or bite. I try to substitute something when he starts to chew on fingers. He mostly mouths fingers and hands, not really biting, but we don't like to let him get started. Sounds like yours is waiting for you to get home and has a lot of pent up energy that has to come out.... and does. Better than a dog that is too sedate. Mine has settled down some after a year but still has plenty of energy. If you could make time to exercise yours for even 20 minutes in the morning, it might make it a little easier when you get home. Hope it works

hyper hyper Well my Baby is 11 months old and is just as hyper as ever. I don't think has calmed down a bit. When she is too hyper, and it's quiet time, we just put her toys up and she knows it's time to calm down. She usually just takes a nap, so maybe we taught her to be calm??? lol...i doubt it though.

Little maniac Our Yorkie is 9 1/2 months old. Since we got him when he was just under 3 months he has been a bundle of energy. He has days when he is behaving well, and others when he is not so good. I find that the way to control their crazy energy is to give them plenty of exercise. We have to walk Loki 3 times a day- for awhile. One in the morning/ early afternoon, one in the early evening and one at night. When he gets these walks he is calmer at home- not barking and being a maniac- chasing after our heels, chewing up everything in site. I guess this has to do with age- but I can't imagine him calming down ever. That's okay though- he keeps us moving and exercising too. We love it- he is so much fun!

thanks everyone! I must admit, I don't give Mason enough exercise.....I live in an apartment complex, so I don't have the luxury of letting him run around in a yard or anything....and when the whether is bad outside, I keep Mason indoors (we've had three snow storms this season ). But I will definitely take your suggestions - I'll get him more rawhides to keep him occupied and take him out as much as I can! Thanks guys

I understand! For one week, I had a perfect yorkie! Now, at 10 weeks, Cooper's energy has appeared (along with a good deal of sass). We have found that we can walk back and forth in the house a number of times and he will run to keep up, and wears himself out doing this. We've enlisted the help of our Golden Retriever, Honey, to help us 'run' Cooper, and he sleeps like a little brick. You don't have to go outside to get exercise! Just let them go through a good bout of the puppy zooms and that'll take care of it. Christi

This is one reason we went ahead and bought Mr. Waya. Chuhga was running me ragged. Now they run each other ragged. LOL She slowed down while she was pregnant and after she had the puppies, she was just too pooped to play. Now she is at it again. When they go outside (we have a big fenced in yard) they run like the devil is behind them. The poor cats have to get up high to get any relief.

I have to admit, it really does help to have two dogs. Bo runs our Schnauzer ragged and that satisfies most of his hyper energy. Terriers are just very very active little dogs. Good luck!

DITTO......... Lil Bit gets most of her energy out playing with Apple......But Apple also learned to be a couch potato from my aging greyhound, Lori.... Lori sleeps 23 1/2 hours per day....(only awake now to eat and go outside)...so before I got Lil Bit all Apple did was get up on the couch and crawl up under the heating pad and sleep for hours... Now, Lil Bit will eat....play a while with Apple and when she sees everyone else sleeping (and nothing else going on) she crawls up the ramp to the couch with Apple and sleeps, too!!!!!!!!! How great is that????????

Snoodles is a year old now, and will lplay like crazy and then take a nap. SKome days she is worst then others. She won't let us alone on those days. Take her for walks, outside in the yard etc.etc. Other days she will calm down after a while. Plays hard, then crashes! They sure are energetic little ones! Pat

| I agree- having two dogs helps. Sandy is older but Tia runs her ragged with all of that puppy energy!

Adult Yorkie Scrappy is almost 5 years old now. I find that he has an excellent balance of energy/playtime and rest/lap time. Unless he is really sleepy, he follows me all over the place, especially the kitchen. But usually he just watches what I am doing, occasionally pawing my legs for playtime or for a bite, which I of course can not resist!
