Exclamation HELP, preventing mom from buying from a back yard breeder.....

UGH (sorry for the rant that is to follow)

So I'm sooo frustrated. I love my mom, but when she decides something there is no holding back, I'm glad I don't live at home any longer. So she just calls me and says, "Jane Doe has a beagle who just had puppies, do I want a boy or a girl?" (name change of friend)

I tried to give her the, there is a lot more you need to know, speach, but she kept interupting me.

So I know the background story and it wreaks back yard breeder:
Jane bought a beagle from her sister a supposed reputatble beagle breeder in the US, they shipped her the pup to Canada, and then a month or so later Jane sent the dog back because it had "issues" which no one will tell me what they are. So the sister sends her a new dog, which oops happens to be pregnant .

So now Jane is moving back to the US, and is selling the puppies, she has offered one to my mom for free. And mom seems to think this free puppy will be wonderful!

I managed to give her a few pieces of information, cause I know her, she wont listen to me, and I pray to god for the sake of my mom and step dad that they change thier minds. I told her to ask about the mom's mom's registration (Jane's dog isn't registered, but the mom has papers) I explained what AKC and CKC (Continential?) stand for, and explained that AKC was the same as Harley's Canadian Kennel Club registration. I also asked for the kennel name of Jane's sister, I want to research it.

I also begged her to leave the pup there until 12 weeks. But I'm not winning that battle. She seems to think that a puppy can get vet checked just like a horse (we're horse people, she's never had a dog of her own) and the vet can say that it''s a sound dog and that it will be healthy forever... which is not true..... She wouldn't listen to me about bite inhibition or anything. I got Harley at 9 weeks and it was a huge test to my training abilities.

Then I told her she needed to consider insurance and food and neutering etc, but she threw in my face that my purebred dog has been really sick so whats the difference from any other dog, rescue, back yard breeder, or whatever.

I don't know what I'm looking for now, support, advice, things to ask so that I at least know what my mom is getting into.... I just need friends who understand. She is being exactly one of those people we try to warn on here, more concerned about boys or girls rather than doing whats right for the family or the dog. Does anyone know anything about beagles that could help me... if she gets this dog, she's definitely going need training help.

It's very difficult to change people's minds but at least you tried your best. I hope she reconsiders but it doesn't sound like it.

Yes she is very strong minded, and she doesn't like being told by her daughter what to do... maybe I should have acted excited and told her it was a good idea, then she'd probably change her mind.

It also doesn't help that she has 7 horses and many of them aren't being used now that I'm not home running the business (horse riding facility), she's building a regular old funny farm.

Plus one of her horses HATES dogs, I really don't see this being good for the dog either.

But you're right, there isn't much I can do, if she's made her mind up.

Try to get her to weigh all of the pro's and con's of taking on this dog without a care of where it came from. Research the breed, let her know what you have found and let her make her own educated choice.

After that if she is willing to take on the responsibility of possible caring for a sick animal than why not give a pup a chance at having a loving home with someone who knows the risks and accepts the responsibility.

Every dog deserves to have a good home regardless of where or how they were brought into this world !

I've dealt with all this recently....

I DID help change my Grandma's mind but not my uncles. My grandma's Lab died and a week later she called me to tell me how she couldn't stand it anymore and was picking up a Boxer puppy that weekend "from a breeder in PA - and she has ALL kinds of different dogs, Poodles, Boxers, etc!!" . She researched the breed for all of one night and decided on it. And a WHITE Boxer at that. They are more prone to health problems. I LOVE Boxers-- but I tried to remind my grandma how muck work puppies are, they are chewers, esp. Boxers as pups, potential health problems, and all that... it did not seem to kick in. I tried to act excited for her, but also fill in her at the same time, w/o sounding snobby or whatever. Well... apparently like 4 other people told her about their health problems and she decided against it! She ended up going to the SPCA and adopting a 1 year old mellow Foxhound mix that is perfect for them!!

My uncle, who is a great guy, but does a ton of traveling, is single so out a lot, etc, decides on a German Shepherd. Again I LOVE Shepherds and grew up with one, want another someday, but I gently told him how much work Shepherds are, they need a lot of training and work and socialization, etc, You need to go to a GOOD breeder especially for a breed such as a GSD. "Well I need cheap!" so he went to an Amish farm and picked up a female pup, the first place he went to .... I don't think it was a smart decision but with some, you just can't change their minds.

I love beagles, and if I were to get one, I would look at the pound. Beagles in need of homes are abundant.

Hope you can change your mom's mind.

Humane Society of Missouri Rescued More Than 90 Yorkies from Substandard Puppy Mill - YouTube

show her this.

and this

Oh, and take her to the pound. Ask her if she'd like to go to lunch, and stop off at the humane society so you can take a look at the dogs they currently have. It seems kinda like a slick move, but I'd do it .

Well the good news is, I've yelled at her a few times, (sadly that's how we converse sometimes) and she just told me that it wasn't fun anymore, cause apparently this was supposed to be a fun thing for her and my step dad to do. So maybe we've slowed her down.

She also just talked with her best friend who just lost two siamese cats that were terminally ill due to being from a kitty mill (they were gifts and she didn't know it was a bad breeder and has since gotten a new breeder) and she reinforced that chance of illness if this breeder doesn't check out.

I'm going to try and educate her, I hope it works, I also hope the vet quotes her a really big price for the neuter and needles, that may deter her, they really can't afford this right now.

My other big fear, is lets say she gets the dog, accepts the risks if it is a back yard breeder, but then he gets sick. She has two very ill old horses in our barn that she refuses to put down (I know it's crude sounding, but I came to peace 4 years ago that the two of them didn't have a great quality of life and I wanted to call the vet, but she wouldn't let me, I love those horses, but know when to draw the line as a responsible pet owner) I would hate to see her do the same thing to a dog, if it did have serious problems.

I hope this blows over, or at least that the breeder checks out, but there have already been a lot of red flags. I also worry that mom wouldn't give it a good home, her house is not one for dogs, it's a show house, it's just not safe.

Yes we just discussed the shelter option, she told me apparently she has been talking with my step dad about rescuing a puppy, but that instead of not knowing where it came from, getting this free one from "jane" would be better. I guess she's been thinking about it, but my point of view is if you can't afford the $300 adoption fee how on earth can you get a dog. Thank you for the video, she doesn't have internet, but I'll find a way to show her. I think it's very educational.

Hehe I tried to remind her that a friend of ours, went to a 4H show, they left their beagle in the hotel room for 30 min to go grab food, when they came back thier luggage and the beagle were waiting for them at the front desk, apparently he wouldn't shut up They are now black listed from Best Westerns...

I also tried to explain to her that of the many breeds, my little bit of knowledge tells me that beagles tend to be prone to very bad separation anxiety. meaning more howling....

Yeah I know that many beagles with good owners do not howl, if properly exercised and given proper training and attention that can be avoided. My mother and I however do not come from the same style of training. I doubt she'd be able to deal with separation anxiety issues, and well the exercise, not sure about that, we have so much wild life at mom's a beagle would probably track a deer off into the woods if let off leash.

"Research the breed" Great advice!

I had a friend (who lives out in the country where dogs are commonly dumped )find a skin & bones beagle on her street last year right before Christmas, and after having no luck finding its owners and getting it into good health she was looking for a home for it. At the time I was waiting to get ZoE and my friend couldn't understand why I would "pay good money" for a dog, when I could have that one for free.

Most beagles howl and all beagles shed hair. Those two factors tell me its a breed that doesn't belong in my home!

Too many times people take on a new puppy, especially a free one, because they see an adorable cute lil puppy face, but they don't do their homework and research the breed and find a dog that best suits them. I think this is in part why so many dogs end up at shelters...they don't turn out to be what the owner expected...even though that dog may turn out exactly as that dog is supposed to be.
