| doggie door Does anyone have any good advice on installing a doggie door. I have to cut through the house. I have no back door it would work on. My husband and I are scared to cut through the house in fear we may screw up. I know it would have to be insultated some how. What are your thoughts and ideas? What have you done for your yorkie?

| Just a heads up. These little guys are easy prey for hawks and owls. Many people in Arizona have lost their little ones to these animals. Coyotes are another big worry even with 6 foot walls.

| Don't you have anyone in your area that installs doggie doors? It is usually best if you are dealing with a complex situation to leave it to a professional. I do also agree though that the little ones are too small to be left out doors unattended. Predator animals aren't the only danger there are also predator people and then the chance of them getting out and getting lost before you even realize they are gone scares the heck out of me but thats JMO.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I share livingdustmops' concern, but an option: If you have a sliding glass door, they make special inserts that you can slip right in the door and have an opening for your pet. We've considered, but I'm a little paranoid about giving him unsupervised access to outside.

| Please do not let your yorkie go outside alone unless it is in a covered and completely enclosed area....like a courtyard with a trellis over the top or something. I had a doggy door on my laudryroom door that went out to my garage and then another one on the garage door to the back yard but it was for my bigger dogs and before I had yorkies and I had 7 foot tall stucco fences to keep the coyotes out. Mine are on a leash whenever they are outside out of the courtyard area. |

| Please.... please don't let your dog out on his/her own. Yorkies are very small dogs and even racoons can hurt them. A friend of mine almost lost her yorkie. A racoon came to her backyard and bit her yorkie's neck. |

| doggie doors They work well when you are home..but like other posters say, they can be very dangerous. There was a news story last week where a dog from the outside came through the doggie door and killed a woman little terrier pup. I tell you one thing I would have froze to death in a garage without one. I used to be a pet nanny. I took care of a Basset and German Shepherd ..the food was kept in the garage..both dogs followed me into the garage and the GSD went outside through the doggie door. The Bassets tail caught the back of the door and it slammed shut, locking me in, the automatic garage door refused to open....the doggie door was big enough for me to crawl through..but I had to convenice the Shepherd it was okay for me to crawl out..he kept barking and growling at me to get back inside..plus it was snowing and I had not told my husband the address where I was...what a nightmare. |
