| Wendell's sweater caused HUGE tangles I put a sweater on Wendell and went for a long walk last week. Three miles and about 2 hours later (we stopped for lunch) I took off the sweater. To my horror, he was completely covered in mats. I've been letting his hair grow out, and it's about 3 inches long on his back. Luckily, he's tolerant about grooming, and so with some anti-tangle spray and a wide toothed comb, 30 minutes later he was mat free again. But winter is coming, and he's going to need to wear something to keep him warm. Does anyone have any suggestions on the type of coat/jacket/sweater that doesn't cause tangles? I also got him one of those "horse blanket" style coats that is lined with fleece and buckles under his belly, but he's only had it on for short outings. Will that work better for long walks? I'm afraid to put anything on him now! |

| I kept my last yorkie in a full coat and had problems with her matting under her armpits and chest when wearing coats in winter. I had bought her silk kimono style pajamas from Singapore. She hardly ever ended up wearing them as pjs, but I did use the silk top under her coats and that lessened the matts significantly. So maybe you could look for a silky shirt to put under the coat?

| I've heard that helps too, but haven't tried it yet. Tia has a cotton coat and matted terribly without the sweater so I had the groomer give her a puppy coat for the winter. Since we've moved up north, she will be wearing them all the time and she would not have any hair left if I kept it long. Ally, on the other hand, has a silky coat and tangles. She is an absolute DIVA when it comes to grooming, but is a bit more manageable when it comes to coming them out. I do trim her tight on her chest and arm pits. They are the first to matt/tangle. Isn't it weird how we need to trim them more in the winter when they need the hair to keep them warm! Let me know if you find the magic cure. |
