| Feeding out of my hand? Rocco, my new puppy doesn't eat his food unless its in my hand. I get worry he doesnt eat since he's so little so I can't help but hand feed him since he actually eats when I do that. Is this normal for a puppy?

| Ziva was the runt and spoiled from the start, she has always been a picky eater. The kids were fooling with her kibble and spelled out her name- and she ate it all up! we found she likes to eat off the floor one kibble at a time- we now use a flat plate or dish, and give her plenty of peaceful time alone to eat(no distractions) she must be hungry (no snacks) offered 3 x a day (twice now that she is grown). Abby on the other hand had to fight to get whatever she did from a litter of 5. She will eat anything- anyway! |

| I have heard of some puppies being scared of there dish. My aunts dog was scared of her dish so she just put it on a doggy place mat on the floor and her puppy would eat it then. Callie will normally eat out of a bowl but when she is not feeling good I will hand feed her because sometimes she wont eat.

| I would try another dish first. How much is he eating per day? Most dogs wont allow themselves to go hungry (unless they're sick). Is he being offered treats and other things on top of the kibble? I noticed when my boy was sick that by offering him too many things to entice him to eat, he would just hold out until I gave him more of the stuff he liked. I removed all the extras and now he's gobbling down the food like crazy. If it's a matter of just plain not eating, I would give some Hi-Cal (or Nutri-cal) a few times a day just to assure that he isn't low on sugar (just a pea size drop) and watch his behavior. If everything else seems normal just wait it out a day or so and remove treats, see if that helps. (they learn to train us very quickly, cause they know we worry about them). See if a change in dish helps as well. If you see any signs of soft stool, vomit, blood in the stool, go to the vet immediately, his decrease in appetite could be from a bug, virus, bacteria, or allergy. All of which require medication to stabalize him. What are you feeding him? Hope the dish change resolves everything.

| My Jimmy also loves to eat his food off the floor rather than out of the dish. I toss some kibble on the floor and he eats it all up.

| We had to experiment with dishes until we found one Gracie would eat from, but she would always eat out of our hands. I found that a shallow, ceramic dish worked best. I think she could see her reflection in the stainless steel one :-) We also started mixing a teeny, teeny bit of wet food to her kibble and that finally did the trick - she eats well now. |

| I would experiment with different bowls or putting kibble on the floor or placemat as others have suggested. If he is really tiny, it's more likely he is afraid of the bowl. Congratulations on your new baby, by the way! GREAT name too! )
