| Puppy biting/eating real christmas tree! I know we should probebly gate it off, but we just put up our real spruce christmas tree last night. My 4 1/2 month old yorkie is jumping at the branches, trying to eating the branches, etc!! I trimmed all the ones that were low last night but he thinks it's a new toy and still trying to get at it! Should I just gate it off? Will the pine needles harm him? |

| If you have one, I'd suggest putting an x-pen around it! |

| There are lots of things on the tree that could harm him. Pine needles could harm him. So could the electric lights, bulbs, etc. We always gated off the trees from puppies.

| I'd block it after the experience I had last year with Princess as a pup. She knocked off about 15-25 bulbs if I remember correctly-they were plastic & she chewed the part you hook the hook to so they were def trash. Also, she chewed 3 strands of lights (unplugged thank God). By the time Christmas came the tree was only lit & decorated from the top third & up, due to her and me moving things away. Hopefully she's outgrown that this year but luckily I have the expen this time if not!

| Putting it on a stand is another possibility. I have always found x-pens are cheapest on Amazon and eBay.

| May I recommend a ceramic tree with lights for your coffee table. I don't even have plants in the house anymore because I don't want to put him at risk if he ate a leaf. Perhaps put a little decorative grate around the perimeter of the tree to keep puppy out |

| Hey everyone... following the same train of thought. I just realized we're visiting relatives for christmas and mom puts up a real tree. it wasn't an issue last year cause we were at the in laws, and she has an artificial which he didn't bother (surprisingly) They don't have gates or xpens, and Harley typically stays in the livingroom when we visit cause that's the safest place in the non-puppy proofed house. I have a pop-up xpen, but it's not very big... any suggestions? I'm hoping poor Harley wont have to spend the entire christmas in the xpen.

| Use s leash and attach it to you...so he can go aroudn the house and be within sight. Pack him around as in carry him or... keep treats on you at all times (I'd boil a chicken breast and dice it up tiny) reward him with treats to constantly be at your heels, next to you out of trouble. Either or do any of these in conjunction with lots of play, when you are all visiting, have two of you on the floor playing with toys with him, visit with people one on one or in group walks walking your dog to tire him out.

Apart from worrying about the possibility of it being toxic - I really didn't want to spend the next few weeks worrying and telling off and saying 'no' - we just want to enjoy ourselves!! Sally + Harry x | |
