| Reluctance to go outside in rain or cold Hello everyone! I have a 9 month old yorkie boy, Brownie and a yorkie/maltese mix girl, Cookie. Both were doing well with potty training. We started with the potty patch inside. Then about a month ago moved it outside to the side of the house where they would regularly poop on it or in the surrounding gravel. They loved spending time in their dog run area and accidents in the house were rare. Then the weather changed. With cold and rain moving in and it being dark by 5:30 now, the dogs are reluctant to go outside at night now. Where they used to run to the door when we said "outside" they now run and hide the house. Which has lead to more accidents occurring in the house. When we force them outside, they can't wait to get back in. If I put them on the side of the house in the dog run area, they cry. Any suggestions? I don't want to bring the potty patch back inside. Will they get used to periods of yucky weather? Sonja |

| Keep making them go outside. It will be a long winter, and wont get warm for a while! Even if they hate it, they HAVE to go out. Bailey hated it... and we forced her outside, and now she knows as soon as she goes potty, she can come back in! In the morning she will usually run down the steps, pee quick, run as fast as she can(in the wet grass) to the back fence, poop, and run back in... and go to slepp;zzzzzzzz! |

| I am very fortunate i guess! Of my four dogs, only one is a yorkie and he is the one who likes to go outside the most. He doesnt mind, rain, snow, wind, nothing gets to him when he wants to go outside. My jack russell on the other hand will hold it all day to not have to go out in the rain! |

| I am having the same problem too! I just got Lucky from his old owners who wouldnt take him outside. I got him to go out, but the weather today is rainy and cold. He wont go. He stops at the doorway and wont step out. I feel like if I dont make him go out we will have a step back and he will go inside again. I dont want all the progress to go down the drain. Advice please!

| Cody hates it too and sometimes won't potty in the rain. Unfortunately there's really only two solutions. One is to let them potty inside somewhere. The other is to keep taking them outside. That means that while they are learning the ropes, you will have to go outside with them. And sometimes keep them out there with you until they finally potty. Eventually, they'll catch on and learn to be quick to get back inside. |

| Yesterday and today have been cold and rainy and we've been having the same problem with Tink. I have three other dogs and all of them hate the rain. LOL But, I continue to take them all outside to potty. The older ones have learned it's outside to potty regardless of the weather. Tink will learn, too, in time |

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | I have the opposite problem. Katie Scarlett begs to go outside...rain, shine, or snow. She gets mad at me when I won't let her go out. Like today it was pouring rain and I wouldn't take her out. We 'walked' in the house several times and she just kept giving me this look like....this is not what I want! LOL. I hope yours get better at going out! Good luck to you!

In the past week, she's gotten better about getting the business done quickly (finally!) so she can go back in. Takes time. When winter came, I knew she didn't remember that kind of weather so it was all new. She's figuring it out. We do have a small covered patio and during rain, I don't care if they potty in there. When it's not raining, it's outside everybody!!

| Thankfully ZoE is pad trained so I don't have to worry about taking her out in the rain or cold. I'm a hardcore DIYer, so if I did have a larger dog that had to go outside and didn't like the weather, I'd build a pavilion off the back of my house, so it had coverage from the elements....cos I wouldn't want to have to stand out in the rain and get soaked either. Could you create some type of covered area for your pup?

| Good morning! We don't have this problem with Harry, but we did have it with our labrador . She actually never really got over it, but it did get slightly better as she got older. Do you take them out there on their leads? Unfortunately, at first at least, you're going to have to bear the elements too, mac + wellies by the door. Is there an outside light you can put on for them if they don't like the dark? It reached the point when I used to creep outside with the umbrella over Rosie the lab, and me getting soaked...!!! | I can sympathize. I have Calypso potty pad trained (even at work I put a potty pad in my office) I wanted him pad trained as a backup. Now I'm trying to get him to potty outside and he pretty much refuses. He will do a poop out there if we stand long enough, but will hold his pee. We come in and he runs straight to the pad. He's 16 weeks so he's young enough to make the change, but I don't think it will be easy.

| Oz is outside only and I find that he's ok if I put a sweater on him. However, I live near Vancouver, in BC, Canada, and our winters are usually pretty mild. Oz hated getting wet, but the sweater really helps. He is so quick to do his business that we're never out there for more than a few minutes. I also think you should keep making them go outside, but make sure you give them a treat the moment they come in. Oz is so used to that he just zooms over to his "cookie" jar and waits for it. I go outside with him, too, and praise him as soon as he is going (i.e. "good pee-pee Ozzy"). I don't think he'd go out by himself. Also, I don't make him stay out if he runs back to the door, BUT, I know him by now, and know that once he's at the door to come back in, he is not going to do anything else outside. So, to summarize: - sweaters for warmth - accompany them outside - praise when they go outside - treats when they come back inside Try all that, and hopefully it will help. Good luck!

| If you are adamant about your decision of no potty patch inside, then they simply must be made to go outside. And that means you must go too...rain, shine, whatever. Rather than only getting them to go out when it's potty time, try taking them out for no reason other than to play or get a treat...anything that's a positive association. Also, be sure there is a nice bright spotlight when they go out at night. Even if you have to escort them with an umbrella, as long as you can get them outside they will get used to it. I went through the same thing with Rocco when he was that same age. Patience and persistence on this one will make for a much happier winter for all. Good luck!

| Yes as most have said, you have to teach them that like a postal service worker, neither rain, wind, snow or gloom of night shall keep a Yorkie from their appointed rounds! ;-) A few nights ago it was snowing and windy and Bailey and I took our walk around the block. He heads on out and shakes off the elements ever so often. But now I realize he really needs a coat or sweater as he shivers once we return. I take a blanket and wrap him up in it on my lap till he warms. Time to go sweater hunting! |

| Also agree with butchpoodle... if you take your pup outside and he doesn't go, then they must be confined to playpen or crate until the next outing. Potty training is a long process. It can be painful at times, but once they get it, it makes it all worthwhile.
