Yorkie Yakker | bringing home a new yorkie with 2 existing yorkies Hi, we are considering adding a new yorkie puppy (10-12 wks old) to our family - we currently have 2 female yorkies, 1 is 2.5 yrs and the other is 1 yr old. we are wondering if the gender of the new yorkie will make a difference - whether they are more willing to accept another female or a male. Thanks |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I have 2 male and 2 female dogs in my house. I haven't found any problems with the gender mix. I do believe it depends more upon the individual personalities of the dogs. If your females are outgoing, a more laid back pup might be easier to add. If they are really laid back, then I would suggest a laid back pup (as laid back as pups can be!) to avoid upsetting the balance. Good luck with what ever you decide.

| Perhaps they would like a younger brother around the house. |

| From what I've read, a male and female will get along better than 2 males or females. Before anyone dresses me down for saying that, let me say this: I'm not saying this is correct 100% of the time as there are lots of different situations where that's turned out NOT to be the case. I did just add a male who is 1 to our home where we have an 11 year old girl for 8 years-ALONE. She is tolerating him pretty darn well after being ALPHA for so long, and given her age. We did have him neutered and I had also read that girls love neutered fellas, hahaha. Again, not saying this is 100% true 100% of the time. I did much reading about this very question and from most of what I've read, adding a male with your girls would most likely be ok, but just as another posted said, it depends on each doggies own personality. |

| I agree it has to do with the personalty and temperament of each dog. Right now I have three, one is mine, two are fosters. Uni (mine) is used to being the only child. The very first foster I had was a male neutered and he was shy. She tormented the poor guy. Granted she was in her teens phase then, but then again so was he. He was just a shy little thing. Second foster I had was a female spayed. She and Uni did not interact with each other at all, except when they were playing fetch, they would run to the ball together, but would not fight over the ball. Whoever got it first , got it. But at the house, my foster (Katie) would go right up to Uni and take her toy right out of her mouth. Uni would not try to take it back. Uni would come crying to me to help her. I'd get her ball back from Katie, and Katie would come right back over and take it back. I stopped doing that for Uni after a few times. Clearly Uni was not the alpha in this case. Currently I have the fosters Smokey (recently neutered) and Chloe spayed. S&C love each other, and Uni and Smokey are getting closer, but C&U at first would fight, trying to decide alpha. Now they are pretty equal, neither try to one up the other, but they are far from bffs. I guess this was my long winded way to say, it depends on temperament and training, not on gender or if they are intact. Also I would think that at the ages your dogs are now, there could be some "teen angst" and attitude towards the new addition. But if you give it enough time, they will figure out their ranking on their own. I think as long as the dogs are not physically harming each other, it's ok to let them try to get their own place in the pack, ie growling matches, fighting with no real biting, etc.

| He'd probably be to young to know what he's doing. You can always train him to stop humping. When you see him start to do it, correct him immediately. Are your girls spayed?

| If yours are spayed it will not be a big deal at all if you get him neutered when he is ready. And same as everyone else, it just depends on the dog. I have 4 males who are all neutered and all get along great. My parents have 2 females and a male and they all get along great. I know of multiple people with mixed females and males and they all get along great. As long as they are all fixed it eliminates all the hormonal aggression. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | He probably will "be friendly" a bit. But at just a few months old, it's generally more a dominance thing than hormonal. Just redirect his attentions to some more appropriate activity. Don't be surprised if one of your females actually tries to mount him while they are figuring who's going to be boss of the bunch. It's a normal part of them figuring out the new group dynamics.

| I have 2 girls and then decided to get a little boy. All three get along very well. It really depends on the personality of each dog.
