| New member & Yorkie mom, I think??? HI! I recently adopted a yorkie ( at least I think it is,lol ) from a friend of a friend of a friend. Mojo is around 1 year old and was living in terrible conditions. He was crated day and night, living in his own feces which were even covering his food dishes! I brought him home, bathed him and settled him in to our home. It has taken me about a week or so to potty train him, but he is doing very good! He only puddles the floor when I leave the house. I think he is having seperation anxiety. I just crate him when I leave and it doesn't happen. He is starting to get a little weight on him already as he was stick thin when I got him. He is smart, funny, and quite a character. I also have an older female doxie Penny who is taking her time getting used to him, but she is not too dominate with him, lol. She just backs him off if he gets in her space, haha. We just took him to be neutered, shots, etc last week, and he seems to be coming along great with that. I do have to scold him when he tries to eh hum, clean the area in his own way! I don't buy pets ever, only adopt as I feel there are so many wonderful furry friends out there waiting for someone to love. Mojo is a rather large yorkie at 8 1/2 lbs and 12 inches tall, if indeed that's what he is. He is starting to get the silver on his head. One thing, his head seems to be silky, but body seems wooly or cotton, don't know the diff between them???? I will be putting a pic up and if anyone can tell me if they think he is yorkie, it would be great! I'm in Alabama, so the weather here is mild most of the time. I'm having trouble with Mojo having a smell to his coat. Everything checked out with him at the vets, so am thinking it was the conditions in the crate and the food being fed him. He smells like wet dog all of the time. Anyone with any cures? I don't have the money to buy him frilly fru-fru things and the best of everything, but he will have love, caring & understanding along with shots, heartworm prevent, etc. I won't see a friend suffer and do nothing! If anyone has some home remedies or knows of simple things for me to do to upkeep his health, coat, skin, etc, please feel free to clue me in! I can't afford a groomer so am thinking of clipping myself but can't find a video that shows how without wanting money from ya! Anybody know of a free video with more than 1 minute of nothing in them? Hope to meet some nice folks and get to know u all! |

| Welcome. I love those tender eyes. I think the most important thing is providing a loving environment, providing the best medical care possible, the best food you can afford and a few nice toys. Frilly and fou-fou don't matter. When it comes to my dog I spend more money on her food than her clothes and bows. Good food means she will be healthy and around for a long time. Frilly is fine if you can afford it. I just can't afford to buy her a lot of frilly clothes. Right now she has a sweater and a rain coat. When I get my yorkie, he will have a sweater and a rain coat. I spend more money on food, vet care, toys and grooming. I like to buy the best grooming products affordable for times I can't afford the professional grooming. |

| You will need to get some doggie shampoo , conditioner and a grooming spray. This should help with the wet dog smell. |

| Hes definitely got yorkie in him but I cant tell if he is purebred or mixed with something else also. For shampoo I use Minksheen which is a dog shampoo you can buy online its really not bad priced. I use loreal vive conditioner and I have found it to be better at making the hair silky than dog conditioners Ive tried. You also need a good brush alot of people on here like the madan brush and I believe it is reasonably priced also

| Thanks for the welcome and advice! I'm looking into a nice harness by puppia, the B style as the regular one I have seems to be bothering him with itchy skin. I want to try and get 1 for winter and 1 for summer. His hair looks bad right now, but I'm hoping to get it into shape soon. I've heard that cod liver oil or coconut oil is good to give them in the food to help. We got all his shots etc as Penny my doxie has been with us for 8 years now and I would never want to put her health at risk. I have trimmed 1 ear a bit to see if it would stand up and it perked up a bit, but most likely won't worry if they don't. I think it gives him a rascally look,LOL. Still looking for a video on yorkie trimming so I can give him a puppy cut or short style. If anyone knows about one, please let me know. I'm pretty good with cutting hair and clippers, lol. Thanks so much everyone! |

| Welcome I think he's adorable. And that you are great. I'm no expert but he looks like he for sure is a Yorkie, his coloring is about right for that, and he looks all terrier to me. 8 1/2 pounds is just over the range for "standard" yorkie. And... to ME it looks like a little bit of mini schnauzer thrown in or silky. Again, no expert here - but you appear to have found and saved (thank you) a wonderful yorkie boy! |

| What a beautiful little dog! I don't wonder you are smitten with him. He sure looks terrier to me and I think he is part Yorkie and because he is, you will LOVE living with and around this dog. Terriers are so much fun and keep you on your toes all day. Enjoy your lovely little boy and keep reading here to learn to be a better poochie parent. Thought I knew a lot about dogs until I ran into the braintrust here and these ladies and gents put me to shame with their depth and range of knowledge on things I'd never even heard of before! This site will also help you just to appreciate and enjoy your dog more than ever with insight into canine's you maybe never had before - at least it has me. Welcome and enjoy that wonderful boy!

| Welcome to YT! Sounds like you really saved him from bad living conditions. I would say he is some type of yorkie mix. He is so cute. There is a member here who custom makes harnesses. Her name is chattiesmom. Here is a link for grooming: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...cerella02.html

| Welcome to YT Mojo sounds very fortunate to have found a home with you. Frilly fru-fru isn't needed...let's face it...that is really for us as owners. Dogs just need a warm loving home, good food & fresh water, exercise, grooming, vet care and a few toys or activities for mental stimulation, and Mojo now has that. What a lucky boy to have found you!

| Here are the Grooming Clips provided on the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America's site ytca.org Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Grooming Lots of good info there. There are some Youtube videos on Yorkie grooming: This is part 1, you'll be cued to go on to Part 2 , Yorkie Maltese Products and Bows: Grooming Instructions This site gives yorkie bathing and grooming instructions -- good ear care (trimming, taping, etc.) info. I had a great DVD on grooming but I wound up letting it go to the new family of one of my pups. I bought it on ebay though. Here is the one I had -- it is a good one: YORKIE DOG grooming instructional video DVD 3rd. Ed. | eBay I know you wanted free -- but the best ones I have seen require some money. You might put a request in the Wanted section here (I think you have to be a member for over a month) and see if anyone wants to sell theirs. Your dog is probably a lot yorkie but not full bred. He sure looks adorable though! Kudos to you for giving him a safe, healthy home with love and affection. Yorkies are a very social breed and depriving this baby of human contact during his early life was abusive as you have already guessed. They thrive with lots of human contact. To get his coat in optimal condition good grooming, to include daily brushing is a must. But diet is also very important. You will find a premium food is going to be worth it in the long run. You will use less food, have nice little compact poops, and have a stronger, healthier dog than if you choose to feed the economy brands. I initially fed my dachshund Alpo and Pedigree -- thinking them good foods. When I found out more about canine nutrition and what was allowed in those brands, I quickly switched to better food. But my dachshund lived to be 17 1/2 years old. So, it won't kill them to eat the cheap stuff..... but I often wondered if I had her on a premium diet from the start, if she would have had a more comfortable life in her old age. She was plagued with arthritis, bad arthritis. I don't take chances now. I feed the good stuff. As far as shampoos, there again, you get what you pay for. I had some cheap stuff I had bought at a grocery store. You had to use so much of it to get a lather and good washing! Then you needed LOTS of conditioner as the shampoo did not leave their hair at all soft or tangle free. Now I use Minksheen or Espree shampoo and conditioners. Espree has lots of choices. My favorites are the Espree Hypo-allergenic Natural Coconut Shampoo and the Espree Luxury Remoisturizer. You use such a small amount of each, that they safe money in the long run! Plus you have this wonderful, tangle free hair, to comb through making grooming a breeze! Since this poor baby was not cared for, even abused.... you may have to bathe him several times before you start getting rid of that smell. I would suggest a baking soda or vinegar rinse a few times to help with getting the smell to go away. Bless you for saving this little guy. He is so cute. I cannot imagine how anyone lives with themselves while mistreating such a sweet dog!!! Enjoy your partnership with your Mojo!

| Oh, he is such a handsome boy! And I will echo what another has said...You will love being around a terrier. They are great dogs and he does have a lot of yorkie in him for sure. Good luck and don't worry about a groomer, you'll do just fine on your own
