| gettin cold out Its starting to get really really cold here and we have even had a few flakes of snow fall. We have a 16 week yorkie puppy that was all but totally house broke. I have put her coat on every time we have went out and she still sivers and shakes like crazy because the north wind is killer today and the rain is COLD! I feel so sorry for her I broke my own rule and put down puppy pads. My question is what is the best way to teach her to use them? She has full run of the house and I am home with her all day everyday since I work from home. Or should I just keep taking her outside? She is not pleased at all about going out and the coat does not seem to make it any better. I have the puppy pad down in the guest bathroom and she will go lay on it like a bed but not potty on it....yet. What should I do?? |

| It is mega cold and rainy here today. Its up to you what to do. To keep up with the outside training or start potty pad training. If you do the pad training you just need to keep taking her to the potty pad periodically and give her a command to go potty. When she does go tell her good girl and treat her. You could put her poop or pee on the pad so she knows thats where to go or you could get the scented pads that encourage them to go on it. I have one that just wont go out in the weather and how I trained her was she always went to the same place in the house so I put the pad there untill she got used to using it.

| Thanks! I really want to keep up the outside potty thing but my heart just melts when she is out there and shaking and looking at me like MOM, It's Cold out here! I am going to try the pads for the next few days and see how it goes, She is a smart lil girl and I am hoping she catches on quick that the pads are way warmer! |

| Callie is 4 years old and completely potty trained to go outside and I noticed this was a problem during Hurricane Irene when I had to run her out to go potty in very very high winds so what I did was order a pup head Amazon.com: Pup-Head Portable Dog Potty - Regular... I haven't gotten it in yet but I am hoping she will use it for bad weather days and during her recovery from surgery.

| I am working with the same problem, thankfully even though she shivers she just hurrys faster to get her deed done so she can come back in and get some warm snuggles! I just ordered her some fleece botties to help keep her feet warm once snow flys. Right now I am making her fleece coats cause she's so small for store baught ones. Switching form pee pads and outside might be a little confusing to her. I was going to pee pad train Violet then once she gets it down train her to go outside too, so when we are home we can take her outside, but if we arnt home I would like to know she has a safe place to potty. Good luck with which ever way you choose!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | If outside training is what you want then stick to it. Since she is young and still learning you might confuse her if you sudden stop taking her outside and ask her to potty inside. My 4.5lb yorkie is trained to go outside only. I live in Jersey so we get all kinds of weather here. Morgan goes out in it all, she's like the mail man. When she was a puppy I didn't give her any other choice. We both went outside with her on a leash and we stood there until she want. Once stood outside in the pouring rain for 30 minutes until she went. When the snow started we did the same thing. She quickly learned that she had to go quickly in that weather. When there is a lot of snow on the ground I will shovel a part of the backyard so she doesn't have to trek through the deep snow (though sometimes she chooses to do so anyway.

| Well, turns out that while I was on YT just goofing around earlier she went on her pad. I took her in there and she had already did her business. I was like OH WOW good girl. Now, she in going in and out of there a lot, like she is just checking to make sure the pad is still there. We are going to try this pad thing maybe over the weekend and see how it works, if not, we are going to be bundling up and back outside we go. She has not went to the door since, she does however like i said, go to the pad to check it out. Thanks for all the advice though. Now that I bragged on her she will never use the pad again.....thats my luck. |

I looked at these in the past but thought I saw somewhere that these things got like maggott looking worms in them somehow even though cleaned often. Maybe I am crazy and cant remember where I saw that but it was really icky! I am although thinking about ordering the training aide spray though. Maybe that would help too?!? When you do get yours, if you dont mind let me know how it works because if this is what I need to do to keep her warm I am willing to try it. | |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | You might try making the trips outside more fun. Bring a toy or a treat. If snow is built up, shovel off a path or pack it down. Yorkies can easily handle a brief trip outside to pee. They just gotta get used to it slowly. Good luck!
