| Pondy smell! My little Poppy smells like a pond!!! I bath her probably once a month, but the smell is always there! It's not nice! Does anyone have any idea why she smells like this? Her bedding is washed every other day, she's had all her vaccinations, she is regularly wormed and de-flead, I brush her and clean her eyes daily, but she still has this smell! |

| Her food could be part of it? I think most Yorkie owners bath closer to once a week? Or maybe just a change in shampoo? Not sure, I know others will have better thoughts on it, I hope your little pond baby starts smelling sweeter after some others chime in.

| I have several questions. Does Poppy have any retained puppy teeth? If so they need to come out and this might be the cause of the odor you are smelling. Could she have a yeast infection in the hair around her mouth? Are you feeding fish oil in her food? What do you mean she is "deflead" and "dewormed" regularly? Are you using some sort of flea dip or topical application? If she is on a Heartworm preventative that is broad spectrum this would take care of most parasites and the need for deworming would not be necessary. As for bathing monthly as a contrast I personally bath mine weekly and comb/brush daily. If I waited a month between bathes with Pebbles she would smell like a barn There are spritzes that you can buy to help between bathes but I do think you need to bathe more often. Minimum more like 10 to 15 days. Good luck.

This is only my personal opinion! Firstly, I would bath her every 7-10 days - I see you're in the UK, I wonder if you've tried Groomers Lavender + Mint? It works, it leaves their hair beautifully soft and tangle-free, and it smells divine. Plus that all lasts a while. Also, the food that you're feeding her might possibly be contributing to her smell? Harry used to have chicken liver occasionally - but I know I could smell it the next day or 2 - not on his breath, but sort of from his skin. I couldn't make out where it was coming from, until it dawned on me... I also give him cooled, boiled water to drink (UK water from the tap is usually so hard) and that's made a difference, too. Good luck to you and little Poppy! Sally + Harry x | |

| Well ponds smell kinda fishy. Is it a fishy smell? If so the anal glands need to be expressed a vet or a groomer can do it. If its a dirty dog smell you may need to bathe more often with a good shampoo and be sure to rinse well

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Ha ha, we have a pond and that what I was thinking, especially after the fish have spawned you get that smell. To the OP, have your vet show you how to check the anal glands. It's very easy, but you have to do it right or you could cause your dog serious injury. Some dogs need it checked weekly and other dogs never need it, so it's best to learn how to do this.

| Thanks for the replies. She is on Orijen puppy food which was the best food I could find. My last dog was on Orijen and my cats are and do great! No it's not fishy, kinda just a horrible doggy wet pondy smell, and after she's been outside she smells worse! It's not an anal gland smell. She gets slightly runny eyes that I clean everyday, and thought that might be the cause, but it's not, it's her coat/skin that seems to smell! My vet has always said not to bath them too often as it inteferes with their natural oils. I use Whal shampoo and conditioner that I love the smell of, but her smell quickly returns! No I don't use a flea dip, I use Frontline spot on monthly, and vetpac wormer every 3 months on the advice of my vet. At the moment she is loosing her teeth, she's just lost all her front ones within a few days, and now bigger ones are coming through. She has yet to lose her canines and back teeth, she's 19 weeks. Yes, we live in a very hard water area, so maybe I will boil her drinking water. I have a detangling spray, which smells lovely, but her smell soon returns. |

| I'd try bathing more frequently & see if that makes a difference. ZoE gets a bath every week. We've pushed it to around 10 days, but I can't stand much more than that. Bathing a yorkie that often shouldn't dry out there hair or skin if you use a good mild shampoo, along with a conditioner and make sure to rinse thoroughly. Left over residue has far more of a drying effect on their skin than bathing does.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | I'm a newbie Yorkie Mom so cannot offer the best advice, but my first thought was maybe bathing more? We bathe ours once a week and she smells so good all the time. We actually love to sniff her! LOL! Is that weird or what? I hope you can get lots of good answers on here. I know these old pro's will be able to help you more than I. Good luck!

| I always bath my girls once a week. Anytime after that and I can tell that they are needing a bath by the way they smell. |

As for the bathing, Yorkies have hair and no undercoat much like a human. My vet also told me to bathe mine monthly as well but I have to say it's not of a general broad recommendation and not breed specific.

| Thank you, I will try bathing more often and see if it makes a difference! She will be spayed 3 months after her 1st season, so I'll get my vet to check her teeth! I was thinking today that I must get a toothbrush, as I want her to get used to having them done every day. She's not full Yorkie, she's quarter Yorkie, and 3 quarters Chihuahua, so she doesn't have the same fur at all, hers is quite short and a bit wispy and wiry on her back. |
