Default Lonely Yorkie?

Wondering how many of you have only one dog? My Rosie will be two in Dec and we have always other dogs in the house until we were moved to England and it was too hard to get them moved over here. Now her buddies have gone to live with other family members as we could only get her over in the end.

She isn't here yet but will be this Friday. Only two more sleeps until she comes home!!! I haven't seen her since Feb and miss her so much!

I have been worrying about if she will be sad being the only furbaby. Even where she has stayed with my friend since Feb she is with 4 other Yorkies.

Does anyone have only one and do they seem fine with it or do they seem bored? If you do have they always been the only one or were they previously with other dogs in the home?

Kiko is my only pet. She is a year and a half. She has been an only dog since we got her (she was 12 wks old). She seems to like being an only dog, but then she hasn't really known much else. She gets plenty of attention and play time.

I'm glad you will be reunited with Rosie soon and hopefully she will be enjoying your attention so much that she won't miss her dog buddies too much.

Good morning!

Oh, I bet you can't wait! It's been such a long time (for you all!).

In our situation with Harry - we only have him, we got him at 12 weeks and he's 11 months old now. So after leaving his 'other mummy' that's all he's ever known. I'm at home a lot though, and he's usually with me/us when we're out.

I realise that we don't make up for other dogs - and that's what your little Rosie is used to. That's the difference, isn't it. I really think you're just going to have to wait and see, obviously there's going to be so much fuss and love and attention lavished upon her that she'll probably absolutely adore being the 'only one'. I do hope so.

Apart from that, we socialise Harry a lot in parks etc etc - and occasionally I take him to the pet-sitters for a day. He has fun while he's there, but is usually tired and grateful to be back home and having us all to himself! Or, have you ever considered doing pet-sitting yourself?!? Hope Friday goes smoothly and happily for you! Sally + Harry x

Romeo is an only dog and has been with me since he was 10 weeks old (he's now 28 months). I believe Romeo likes being an "only child" because he gets all the attention from me and his two human sisters. He refuses to play with dogs of any size but humans (not children) he warms up to and rolls over for belly rubs from complete strangers. Romeo gets plenty love and attention and sleeps on my desk while I work -- not sure how I could accommodate two furbabies on my desk.

Oh, I'm so happy for you and I know how excited you must be...from February is such a long wait for you both.

Zhoie is an a singleton and she will be 3 in January. I work from home, so we are always together. I must admit, she is a lazy girl and I do worry it's boredom. I've often thought of getting another but again, working from home and being on the phone, I'm not sure how that would work out for us. Zhoie knows the routine and isn't a barker, it works great. When she occasionally she's my friends 3 yorkies, she cries she is so excited to see them. That will last for a little while, they run, greet one another, then for Zhoie it's over. She doesn't know how to play dog play with them and then will want on my lap or whatever. I'm not sure she would like it 24/7 and she doesn't like to share me, at all.

You know your baby and you will recognize if a playmate or snuggle buddy is needed. If there is a lot of alone time, maybe, but perhaps not....you will know in your heart what is right for your baby.

I only have one dog.... I have had him since he was 10-weeks old... and he is now almost 15-months. I live right in the middle of the city....He pretty much goes everywhere with me and I make sure to get him out for lots of meet-ups and play time.

Thanks so much everyone! I know she will never be lonely for human attention as I am a stay at home mom who also home schools my kids so there is usually always someone here. I always took them with where ever I could and plan to have Rosie out with us unless it is impossible for her to be at a certain place.

I know she is a mommy's girl I just hope she doesn't miss her 4 legged buddies too much.

My Grandparents had an only doggie years ago and she was very well adjusted but she was with them from a baby and never knew any different but she also got along fine with any of the family dogs that came to visit on holidays too.

I have an only dog but I also have a cat, Sophie Kate likes other dogs but she doesn't seem to be lonely when one is not around. I will say she does hang out with our cat a lot, they like to cuddle when they are sleeping.

I want to add that it is not always cuddles with those two, there are times they fight usually brought on by Sophie Kate.

Well the fact is that she is used to her buddies and now they are gone and she is in a new world. That is much different than a dog that is used to being an only dog. She has quite an adjustment to make when she gets there. If she is going to be home alone for hours a day it could be a bit depressing for her. My Gracie is an only dog but I am home with her most of the time and she seems fine with that. I would think that you need to wait and see how she adjusts to her new living conditions as she may miss her friends quite a bit.

I agree Gracilove, I don't work and and am home most of the time and when we aren't in we are usually doing things as a family, most of which Rosie will be able to participate in. If there is something she can't participate in it will be the rare family dinner out.

I won't be getting any other permanent pets while here unless I find it much easier to take them back to the states then it was to take them out but if she seems sad and we are not enough companionship for her I want to look into fostering while we are here.

That's a really good idea. Or maybe you may have neighbors with dogs or a dog park. I'm sure there is some way to entertain her. There is no quarantine to get a dog into GB?

There is quarantine of 6 months OR they can have all the necessary things done there and wait the 6 months there at which time they can come right in with everything in order. So we started the process before we left and she had to wait out the 6 months there and finish up the last minute things just before flying. Even after everything is done they don't make it easy. It is costing us near $1500 to fly her over and that is with us and my friend handling it on the other end so easily double that and more if a pet shipping agency is involved!

In January of this coming year that will change to 3 months!

Start looking to see if you can find dog parks, local meet ups or neighbors with pets where you can take her so she can socialize. I understand what you are saying if you get another it may difficult and expensive when you are returning home.

We will only have 1 dog in our house for a while. The hubby wants a basset hound, but I don't know about double the vet bills and such. Plus he works odd hours and I'm the one who will have to do all the work. So I think unless we got another Yorkie, I only want 1 for now. We are going to get one of those Snuggle Puppies for companionship though.
