| How do yorkies ears correlate with their emotions? Hey just a question... Oliver's ears constantly change and I was wondering what it meant. They usually stand straight up (and so cute bc they are huge)... but what about when they go back or flop down? For example today at the vet one ear was completely flopped over and the other one was standing up. Last weekend I took him to a work softball game and both were flopped down the whole time. I want to be in tune with how hes feeling... any suggestions???

| Armani's ears are very expressive- down when he is sad, back when he is scared, straight up when he is interested, etc.

| Ears sort of down and straight back can mean deference, pleasure, or that they are listening to sounds behind them. Ears straight down can mean fear or pain. Ears straight up indicate alertness, confidence.

| I honestly haven't ever seen Jada's ears any other way than straight up. Bogie on the other hand will lay his back if he knows he has done something wrong, otherwise his are always up.

| If the ears are "pinned" back flat it means he's scared or angry... Most of the other ones mean happy or laid back, if they are floppy and his whole body is kind of hunched he may be sad or scared too. I'm sure if you google it you can find a good guide too with some pictures. I know I used to print some off for the kids at the barn for horses...

Thor's Human Donating Member | Ears are extremely expressive! Generally, if they are not perfectly symmetrical, the dog is relaxed. Dog body language generally depends on a combination of parts. For instance, wide out to the side can mean relaxed... unless the brow is furrowed (which I find extremely hard to see on yorkies), which means the dog is worried. If you knit your brow, you can kind of feel your scalp move around your ears and sort of feel how a dog would make a worried expression, which I think is pretty cool.

| ^^I agree that there are subtleties in ear position and they have to viewed in relationship to other body parts to interpret body language. One of the things I adore about Yorkies is that their faces are so expressive.

Yorkie Yakker | Little Miss would wind her ears around all the time. She used them so much. It always reminded me of large antennea dishes rotating to get a signal. Our new Yorkie, Jesse, moves her ears a lot, but not nearly as much as Little Miss did. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I think the ears can be similar to a horse's ears expressions...except dogs have more variation w/ happy ears. Like, when my babies are kissing me, or when I make smoochy noises (and they pounce kiss me) - their ears might go backward and forward and backward and forward - and they're really happy and excited during that - so I think their ears can indicate goofiness and playfulness too. I love their little ears, and each of their ears has a cute unique smell too - it's so cute!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Funny...Marcel always, always holds his little ears very up and back when he is sleeping....it looks like it takes so much effort - but his ears are in this little perfect position when he sleeps. It's so cute. Very proper.

| That is the way Max sleeps. Teddy lets his ears hang to the sides like Yoda.

| Buster & Maggie's ears are both straight up when they sleep. Buster's ears will go back and flat when I come home from work. Not sure what that means, I always thought he was glad to see me.

| I think that is what it means. My boys greet me at the gate dancing on their hind legs, front paws waving and ears down.
