Default Question about "Chocolate" Yorkies, Buying Males & Age Question

Hello,
Just curious if there is such a thing as a "chocolate" Yorkie? I've been put in contact with a breeder that a co-worker feels is reputable. She seemed very nice on the phone. I go to check out her place on Saturday.

Right now she has 14 week old male, chocolate Yorkie she wants me to look at. This is new to me. (She wants $600.)

Also, why do males cost less than females?

And, I always thought Yorkies shouldn't be released from their mother's until they are 10-12 weeks old. She says she releases them around 7-8 weeks. Is that okay?

Thanks for everyone's time! Mouse's Mommy (Renee)
P.S. I'm JUST LOOKING.

A "chocolate yorkie" is I believe a mutation or a flaw from a breeding and showing standard. It is not a standard color, or a color that is recognized by the AKC.

I know people who have released larger yorkies at 8 weeks.. (7 is way too early IMO), but 12 weeks is better for socialization, ect.

AKC does register those puppies as Liver/tan.
You have to send in a picture with the registration, but if both parents are AKC registered, they do have to register the puppies.

We have a few owners of chocolate Yorkies in the forum. Girl's cost more I believe, in case you're thinking about breeding.

Yapper,
I think chocolate Yorkies are simply ADORABLE! They have brownish/pink noses (not black) and no black around their eyes. Their coat colors are pretty much the same as a standard yorkie though.... they could have more tan in them though. (Im not 100% positive on the coat colors but I think so) they are JUST adorable! $600 is a good price. Some 'bad' breeders think they can get more for these 'special' yorkies bc they are different and people want them more. They are not special though, they are outside the standard and are not recommended for breeding and cannot be shown. But they are FULL blooded yorkies! Pure bred.

You shoudl go see him!! I love little boys. I have 2. part of me wants a little girl (and it will be a chocolate if I get one) but 3 dogs is more than I can handle right now!

Good Luck with whatever you decide!

I think the chocolate yorkies are adorable! However, don't let anyone try to sell you one for big bucks telling you that they are rare...This is a genetic fault. I have not sent Lillie's papers in yet...I did not see anywhere on there that had this color as a choice. I believe that you can AKC register them but, you could never show them. This is not the standard for the breed. There are was awesome breeders and, people that show on here that can give you more info on this.
Good Luck with your new furbaby and, Make sure you post pics when you get him/her.

I don't know the circumstances with your chocolate, if that is what you are saying you have. But if you have AKC papers and it is truly a chocolate, the breeder should have written in Liver/tan underneath the traditional colors. Then you take pictures and send with the papers to the Special Services at AKC and your Dog will be registered as Liver/Tan.
No, Liver/Tan is not an acceptable "show" color in the Yorkies. Maybe someday it will be.
Chocolate or Liver is mutant in any breed that has that color, say Lab or Chihuahua or Schnauzer. That does not make it a bad thing if you are only looking at color or mutation.
And I would say the quality of the Yorkie would determine the price of the puppy. And as anyone knows Great Quality, Health and availability determine price in any situation.
Also, please do not be fooled by those that have the blue/tan born puppies that will grow to be hairless. Many people who are novice breeders think they have a chocolate when a puppy is born with the blue/tan and in a few weeks the tan part grows, but the blue eventually falls out and never grows back.
A chocolate/tan Yorkie has a pink nose and amber eyes and is truly chocolate from birth. Some do lighten up in color as they age and are almost a pink Champagne color in the saddle part of their hair coat.

BLowry, I would be happy to help you with your registration if you need me, PM me. Or you can call AKC. A lot of times they have the straight answers for you when others can only guess at the procedure of how things are done.

I'm sorry if I mislead you...I do not own a chocolate...I would LOVE to though!! I was just stating that I don't see that listed on Lillies papers. She is going to be a light steel (I think..she is 14 months and still changing) with a lighter tan face. I wanted to wait a while to see if she changes anymore but, I think I am going to register her as blue/tan. (I think that's one of the color choices) It just bothers me when people try to "pull one over" on someone that is new to the breed...making them think they are getting a rare color...or a micro mini, or a teacup...Where if the person purchasing the breed did their research they would realize that this is in fact not true. I love this breed and think they are perfect they way they are..

By the way....Your little one is ADORABLE!!

I would be more inclined to be leary of the situation if the pup is too cheap, after all we know that some types of breeders know what they have and try to get the best price they can for like/kind. They know what they have.
I have seen them for twice what I get for mine and much poorer quality or generic registry.
It is too bad there is so much controversy over such a beautiful color.
Furby2000 has one of my puppies, have you seen her?

Anyway did not mean to derail this topic, would love to see pictures of the puppy you are going to look at Yapper.

Yes, Isn't Maria and Gianna and all one of the most wonderful families that could ever own a Yorkie? Maybe if we are lucky, she will post some new pix on this topic!
Thank you for the compliments! This is her Mommy in my Avatar and yes I have her chocolate Daddy too.
