| Scooting Hey everyone, Has anyone ever noticed their furbabys scooting their butts along the floor? I came home for lunch yesterday and let Julius out of his x pen to stretch his legs and he automatically ran right up the stairs. When i went to go get him, I noticed he was scooting his butt on the floor. When I spoke to a friend who is a vet tech she said it is propbably due to the anal sacs. I do have an appt for him on Monday but I just wanted to see if I could get some advice before then.

| Anal glands was going to be my answer too. That's usually the culprit.

| Anal glands, or sometimes simple itchiness if the rear end was recently trimmed or it needs to be cleaned. Max scooted a couple times when he was a pup and it looked like he was rowing a boat, lol. Sorry, you brought back funny memories.

In the good old UK - they normally say it's due to them having worms but I think that might be an 'old wives tale'!!! Sally + Harry x

YT Addict | Abby did that all the time. I used to have to give her what I called butt baths. She had too much hair there and it would stick and she would scoot. She had two to three butt baths a week. Finally I got her all shaved for the summer including the butt of course and she hasn't done it since. |

| In some cases, it could be worms, but annual fecal tests rule that out.

| Scooting is usually a sure sign that the anal glands need to be expressed. I would suggest having the vet do this, since when expressed it smells so badly! Good LUck!

| i have to shave chloe once a week to keep all that little fuzz back there from sticking in her "poopie". I think if they are'nt feeling clean back there it bothers them. I know it's also a sign of anal glands needing expressed or worms, but if you worm and groom regular then these really prob don't fall into the decision. |

| Harley has suspected irritable bowel syndrom... and I video taped Harley's scooting and itching routine for her, she said he was displaying pain from his bowels and system being out of wack, and also she mentioned the anal glands. While scooting alone is not a sign of pain, more itchiness, if you see weird kicking after a poo, or rolling and itching along with scooting all at once after a poo, talk to your vet. Harley was doing all three at the same time, and my breeder told me the kicking was him marking, but the vet said he was in pain from the bowel irritation... Just something to watch for... or if someone else looks up this post and notices all three symptoms.

wow, i have never heard of those symptoms being linked to irritable bowel syndrome. THey are all very typical normal behaviors for many dogs. Huh Usually kicking after going potty is a marking behavior, and i see lots of dogs roll around and itch as well. Does he have diarrhea? or constipated? Straining to poo? or anything else that made the doctor suspect irritable bowel syndrome? Last edited by Farleys; 09-23-2011 at 01:50 PM.
