| New to Yt,Bringing home my baby in two days!! Hi, I am so nervious! I found a 12 week old yorkie in need of a home. I could not say no(had to convince Hubby)He is so sweet i can't believe the conditions he was allowed to live in! I won't get into that(it will make you cry- I did) Long story short- i am driving back to Tenn to pick him up on thurs. I have read as much about the breed as i could find. Ty to all of you here, this has been a wealth of info for me. I have so many concerns. 1. Will it harm him to change his food right away?(what he is on is sub-par to say the least) 2. He has not had ANY of his shots, but my Vet can't get him in till Teus, will he be ok, or do i find another vet?(i trust my vet) 3. What is the best way to introduce him to my Chocolate Lab? 4. Any suggestions for how to handle the first night home? Sleeping with me in bed or in a crate? 5. We keep our house cool, should i get a warming pad for him or just PJs? I could go on with ?s all day! I am so scared i will mess this up. He really needs to be loved and SAFE. I have named him Sparta due to his fighting spirit |

| Thank You for rescuing Sparta.1. Mix good food with usual food over several days, to ease him onto new food. 2.Take him to your Vet ASAP. 3. That depends on your Lab and the health of your puppy. There are many good threads on how to do this. I think outside is better than in the house, more neutral.4. I would crate for the night, and make that his safe sleeping place. I also feed puppies in their crates and play treat games with them to go into the crate with an open door. When he is house broken you can let him sleep with you if you want him too. 5. Unless your home is really cold I would skip the PJs, and heating pad. I have found that a bath towel to nest inside the crate works well and is washable. God Bless with a safe trip and your new baby.

| Congrats MommietoSparta, I am also a new member and yorkie mom. Your situation sounds similiar to mine. I am happy to share with you the advice others have given me.... If you change foods, the best way is to start is mixing a little of the new food in at a time - not do it all at once. My Brutus had not any shots either, I got him on a Monday and couldn't get into the vet until Thurs - my vet said he should be just fine, and he was. Can't help with #3, he is my only furbaby. My take on #4 - Brutus was sleeping in his crate when I adopted him, but I just couldn't stand it and after 2 nights, he ended up in bed with me. He has recently been sick, so he has been sleeping in our 4 season room (climate control), but will be back sleeping with me as soon as he is 100%. Someone recommended to buy a baby blanket and then for me to sleep on it for a few nights to get my scent on it so he has it during the day when I am not home for comfort. I haven't tried it yet, but will. He is on his 3rd doggy bed for naps during the day. The one he likes best is a very small one that he can dig his face in and surrounds his body. I think owning a little dog is like having your first child, you'll make mistakes on the way but they don't know, you learn (this board is a huge wealth of info) as you go, and as long as you have their best interest at heart and love them - you will be a wonderful mom. My little guy is only 3.5 months old and I can't imagine him not being apart of our family - I am sure you will feel the same way. Good Luck and post pics of your baby so we can see him. |

Don't stress to much, it really will be ok.. 1.. I wouldn't switch foods right away.. He needs time to adjust to his new surroundings and people. Many times they don't eat alot in their new home for the first few days.. switching sometimes will make this worse. Give him a few weeks before doing food changes. 2. This is just my own opinion but I would be making a vet appointment asap.. Is there another vet in the office you would feel comfortable seeing for the time being? I have done this with Taycie before because I didn't feel comfortable waiting. Where he has had a rough start thus far, and he doesn't have any shots, I would just rather have him seen as soon as possible. 3. I can't offer alot of advice as far as introductions go.. I only have my Taycie.. But I am sure others will chime in 4. I would suggest a crate durning the night. I did this with Taycie until I knew she could "hold" it through out the night. Within the first month she was sleeping with me.. I acutally put the crate on my bed and she slept right beside me. You could try putting it on the floor next to your bed so he can see you and know your there. I know many do that. 5. My house is rather cold and Taycie does fine. I think Pjs would be ok.. But he might like a nice warming pad, some really like that and it is really relaxing. I think that is up to you For me, because Taycie sleeps with me PJs are enough on the super cold nights. Don't worry! You won't mess this up. You are already doing everything right by giving him a loving home that he so deserves. Enjoy it!

| Hello! I'm new here at YT also. I'm so glad you are able to adopt Sparta and give him the love and care he needs. If/when you switch foods you should feed his original food and mix in a small amount of the new food with it, then over the course of a few days keep gradually increasing the amount of new food mixed in while decreasing the original food. Do this until he is switched completely over to the new food. Doing it slow like this will allow his system to get used to the new food. I use a crate at night or when I'm gone. My dogs have always done very well with crate training. They like their crates. They will go lay in them on their own during the day sometimes. I use the wire ones. I like those better than the 'pet-taxi' type. it's just a preference I guess. Congratulations on your new baby!!! |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk and congrats on your new puppy. 1. I would keep him on the food he is on for a few weeks to let him get use to things then switch to a new food slowly. 2. Did you explain the situation to your vet sometimes they will get you in faster if they know what the situation is. I would not put off going to the vet to long. 3. I would suggest talking them for a walk together and letting them meet first on neutral territory instead of your house first 4. I think it is safer for a puppy to be in a crate at night until they are potty trained and arnt chewing on everything. I would be scared of rolling over on the puppy in the middle of the night. Keep the crate where the puppy is able to see you though. 5. Callie very easily gets cold so unless she is outside running around she normally has some kind of clothing on.

| Ty all so much. On your advice i have contacted another Vet that can see him on Fri. He told me to keep him away from Our Lab till he is seen. I am making a Petsmart run tonight for all i will need. I think you are right about crating him at first. I like the idea of keeping the crate next to the bed so i can hear him at night, and i will make sure the fan is off on the air conditioner . |

| Also a new yorkie mommy I love his site and everyone has there own opinions. I got my baby when she was only 8wks old. I kept her on the same food becasue it was a good food and I figure if its not broke dont fix it. But I have switched food with other dogs and just mix old in with new (more old than new at first and gradually go up to new daily) I got Dixie on a Tuesday and I could not get her into a vet untill the following Friday (thats a whopping 10 days!!!) she was just fine. Just be sure that if she is sleeping ALOT her blood sugar may be low and you want to chatch that FAST! As a matter of fact that is how I found this site. I was doing some research as to why she did not seem like a normal 8wk old puppy and found out that yorkies are hypoglicemic. I gave her a little bit of karo syrup (after I called the vet and got the ok) and she was a whole new puppy. I somedays miss her sleeping so much I waited a whole day before I interduced her to my big dog just so she was not overwhelmed all in one day. They did GREAT together. I asked the guy I got her from if she was used to a crate and he told me that she had one that the door remained open on and if she wanted to sleep in it she could and if not she did not have to. I did the samething and since she had never been in a crate locked up before I put her in bed with us the first night and that is where she has been ever since. She goes in her crate when I am gone but other than that she has free run of the house. I also started potty training right away outside. I am not a believer of potty pads, dogs are ment to go potty outside. Also, I run a daycare out of my home so the state kinda frowns on doggie pads laying around. She has had 1 accident in the house in the 3 weeks I have had her and that was my fault because I did not hear her at the door. And the mess was right in front of the door. Lots of getting very excited, lots of cherrios and lots of good girls and she does very well outside. I am sure that several people will tell you different things because everyone has their own opinions but I just use the advice : nobody knows how to raise your baby but you. Good luck, and dont stress so much. They are amazing dogs and I could not be happier that I got my baby! |

| Yorkie Boy Hello, Congrats on your baby, I also live in Georgia and I have 4 Yorkie s and 1 Cat, please PM me and I will give you my phone number, if you need support or just want to talk about your baby , they are such wonderful companions and you just cannot have just 1 they are so addicting with there unconditional love. my oldest Kaycee is 12 and I have had him since he was 12 weeks old, my Abbie will be 8 tomorrow, she is Kaycee's baby, Nikki I got from a rescue when he was 2, he lived in the middle of a field in cages at a puppy mill for 2 years in Alabama,he is so verbal and grateful, he is my Fiancee's baby and my Skip is on my avatar he turned 3 in March and he lived with a young girl for 11 months and was kept in a cage the whole time, it took him a while not to be afraid, he would not look me in the eyes when I got him, It takes a lot of patience with these babies, Skip now is such a love bug and will hold my hand with his paw and likes to back up to me to have his tail bone scratched and is so happy and loves his Mom and Daddy. | Welcome and congratulations on your new family member. I could go on and on as well, telling you how "I" take care of all these things when I get a puppy, but it just boils down to how it will work for "you". I can give you some information on shots, holistic approach to combating insects, and foods that has already been published though. | I would think the pup would be fine to wait a week to see the vet as long as there are no health issues you are worried about. I agree with the others though, the sooner the better just so you know for sure he is healthy and won't be passing anything to your other dog. As for the introduction, I am not sure how your chocolate lab is with other dogs/puppies. If good, then I'd introduce them. We always just put the puppy down with the other dogs and let them really check her out (all our dogs are females). We always tried to give the other dogs plenty of attention, especially when paying attention to the puppy, just so they won't become jealous. We had different issues when it comes to food. Our puppies would only eat what the other dogs were eating. We have LeBistro feeders and the food is out all the time. When we tried to get the puppy to eat her puppy food, she wouldn't have anything to do with it and would only eat what the other dogs ate. We had this issue with the last couple puppies we got. So, basically they switched over to what the other dogs ate immediately and completely. No real issues other than slightly soft poos for a couple days. We feed a good all life stages food (Nature's Variety Praire formulas) so it worked out well for all our dogs. Our puppies slept with us from day one when we got them. I am usually a pretty light sleeper and they learned quickly that I'm the one that will take them outside in the middle of the night. I know this is contradictory to what some of the other people are telling you, but it worked for us. Good luck. Welcome to YT! Last edited by sganow; 09-13-2011 at 09:14 AM. |

| Ty All for the replies. I guess i am just worried about his health due to the conditions in which he is in. I think i would feel better getting him in on fri rather that wait till teus. Our Lab is good with other dogs, but we have never had other dogs in our home. I have turned our spare bedroom into a nursery for Sparta(he will still be in a crate in our bedroom at night). My only concern is the sounds of gunfire and morter rounds. We live on base and it can get loud. He seems so scared where he is and i am hoping it will not be too much for him. It breaks my heart that i had to leave him there till thurs. |
