| Itchy skin - not an allergy? Can you help? Maisie scratches a lot. It isnt fleas, mites etc, and vet said its probably an allergy, but it is very difficult to determine what it is, and unless it gets distressing for her, he wouldnt really want to go down the medication line. Neither would I. It is normally around the head - ears, jaws, mouth etc. He gave me a soothing shampoo to use. Thing is, she doesnt scratch at night, or in her sleep, or when she is resting etc, its just when she is moving about. If it was an allergy, would it not bother her all the time, and some say it should actually get worse at night. The past couple of weeks she has really started scratching under her armpits, and she has actually now broken the skin. Her skin is very dry. She is on taste of the wild, I have started giving her salmon oil. She didnt itch when she was a pup. She was on orijen puppy at the time, but I found taste of the wild has suited better, more solid stools etc. Her hair is quite long - do you think this is irritating her? i am considering getting it cut to see if it helps? ANother thing is that when she needs out to poop at night, she starts scratching again. Seems strange that the sensation of needing to poop makes her itchy. Can anyone suggest any causes or treatments, but i dont want her on constant medication.

| Has the vet ruled out a yeast issue? If it's not that, it's probably an allergy. The symptoms are identical to what you describe. You could start with an elimination diet, but if it's environmental (which is much more likely) then she needs to be medicated for her quality of life.

| Have you tried giving her "real" food? I home cook and for awhile I was only giving the girls very lean roasts and their fresh ground veggies. They started itching, their skin was flakey, they had terrible bumps that itched like crazy, so I knew they either had a food allergy or they needed omega 3 fatty acids. (I buy the flax oil gel caps because they are allergic to fish) I started with the food first, but no matter what I took out of what they had been eating, they still itched. In the meantime I was giving them an oatmeal based shampooing every third day and they still itched. I then switched to the itch relief head and shoulders shampoo and itch relief head and shoulders conditioner. Boy was that helpful. I started adding flax oil to their diet and also bought nice marbled roast for a little extra fat. I saved the broth I cooked the roast in and used it to cook their rice and barley together. (I always cook their roasts in the crock pot or pressure cooker). They cleared up so quickly I couldn't believe it. A little fat and oil sure does wonders.

YT 1000 Club Member | There is also a prescription... GlenHaven A2/N Nutrients Which you might consider. This is not a Drug, but a supplement, and I give my two a "pill" about once a month. I think it has definitely helped.

| Callie has environmental allergies and one of the biggest things was her skin would brake out in bumps and she would scratch which twice turned to skin infections. She also has runny eyes, runny nose, as well as her ears recently started bothering her. I know that if I was itchy all the time I would wish it would stop. I take allergy medicine and when I dont its miserable sometimes its even miserable with them and I could not imagine how doggies feel with allergies that are not treated. I would try a medicine and see if it helps. I at first didnt want to medicate Callie because I felt like I was drugging her but when I did start giving her the medicine she seemed so much happier and it didnt make her tired or seem to have any side effects. Callie is on Hydroxyzine it works great for her.
