Angry "just cant make it work"

hi everyone its been awhile since i been on but lately my days have been very busy I actually started to help out at different shelters and i have been fostering pups so lately the computer has been put on hold but actually today i got very upset a lady brought in her poodle who is only 14 weeks old because she "just couldnt make it work" she was just there telling me and another co worker that all she wanted was a poodle and she finally "bought" one and she got him when he was 6 weeks old but now things have changed and he just doesnt fit in to her and her familys lifestyle now what im thinking is why go buy a dog and then after himing him for 8 weeks u decide he just doesnt fit into ur life? how is it that all ur life u wanted a certain breed and now u have the breed u "just cant make it work?" how is that? she went on to tell me all the things he does which of coursr is the PUPPY STAGE what did she think it would be all easy. of course puppies chew of course they wanna play all day and of course they need to go potty so when hes waking u up to go take him dont igone him and when he goes on the floor yell at him. yell at urself cause he tried to tell u! im sorry if im venting but is there really more poeple out there that do this? buy a dog and then dump him after they are not what u expected? u wouldnt dump a child! im sorry but i needed to vent

This is another reason I suggest that everyone only support good breeders. A good breeder will first of all take back any dog should you find it won't fit in with your life style, and even more importantly, a good breeder will interview you long enough to know whether the dog will have a good chance. You have to ask yourself, was your breeder a salesman or did she really care about where the dog was going? Thanks for allowing me to vent, but I really do put more than half the blame on the breeder, and I better not give my opinion of of this "lady".

I've volunteered at the front desk at our local shelter and heard these stories too. It's so hard to understand how people have such unrealistic expectations of how much time and effort it takes to raise a puppy. Dogs aren't an accessory, they aren't a houseplant, and they aren't born knowing how we humans expect them to behave in a house. They are a pooping, chewing, barking, whining, shoe-destroying, mischief-making little pain-in-the-you-know-where until you devote alot of work and patience to get them trained.

After hearing these lame excuses for why people dump their dogs, I finally decided to take the attitude that it was better that people who don't want their dogs any more bring them to the shelter than the number of other "solutions" they could have found. (giving them to some stranger they met on Craig's list, abandoning them in a parking lot, etc). It was best for the dog that this woman brought him to your shelter before she did any more damage. The dog is little and cute and hopefully hasn't been taught that humans are to be feared. The dog is safely in your hands now, free from being scolded and perhaps punished all the time. The new owners will be screened and counseled so that they know what to expect from a puppy. In other words, as previous posters said, you will be doing the work that the breeder SHOULD have done.

Thank you for helping homeless animals, they need more advocates like you.

thank you. im still shocked in my head like how can people do this? what makes them think that the pups are going to be just like the parents did they forget that the breeders may have trained their dogs or maybe some where they learned whatever it is but every puppy takes some training the be the great dogs they are to be.

It is very sad that there are so many people out there that have this attitude about most of the relationships in their lives, their marriage, their kids, their pets. A great marriage, great kids and most of all great dogs come from commitment each and every day.
There is a statement that is uttered by someone in my family alot (not my kids) the statement is "ITS JUST SOOO HARD",it being whatever is something that must be worked at. I prefer "JUST DO IT".

Having a puppy is hard work and I wish everyone knew that before they got one and then decided they couldnt handle it. Its awesome you are helping out at shelters and fostering.

It is better that this happened when he was just 14 weeks of age than when he was much older. It won't be as traumatic for him.

Several years back when my kids were still in grade school I allowed them to talk me into getting a puppy. I had been divorced a few years earlier and had gone back to college and had just graduated. At that point in my life it was like starting all over again. I had several years of moving and uncertain situations but I always made sure that dog was taken care of. I sometimes had to rent less acceptable lodgings in order to be able to keep the dog. I made sure we lived near where I worked so I could to go home and take care of the dog. Of course my kids who had promised to care for the puppy did not live up to their promises but I was the adult who had allowed them to get the pup so I was responsible for the situation. I have to admit that at one point when he was a year old I thought of finding him a new home but could not do it. The little fellow lived to be 15 years old and was a great member of the family. There was not a night that he was not on my bed with me after the kids went to bed. I never had regrets about my decision to keep him despite the sacrifices we had to make. It sickens me how people make decisions to get a dog and then dispose of it as though it was nothing. It seems as though people do not value anything or anyone anymore. Everything is disposable.

i agree im young but i wont let anything happen to my baby or babies lol my baby or babies may not be spoiled with things but with love and attendtion they are spoiled rotten. i know that its hard out here but with all that ive been through ive make things happen where i could keep my babies. sure i have to live out in a farm but here i can keep my babies and not have to worry about being kicked out and so on. dogs are not disposable they have a heart and feelings too! i agree i rather he be brought to the shalter young then older its so crazy because he acts like nothing has happen he came in my house like he has always been here lol its so nice to see this he is not scared and plays so much im goona be so sad when i see him leave!

Good breeder wouldn't have let her take a baby home at 6 weeks either!

People drive me crazy! When I look at Moses, I can't imagine just giving him up because he inconveniences my lifestyle! Yes he's a pain in the bum some days, esp like this morning when he needed to potty at 4am and thought it was time to play! But every morning, I am so glad to see him...and every night I can't wait to give him hugs! There are plenty of selfish, heartless people out there....but I am so glad there are those who pick up the slack those people leave behind!
