| Is Gypsy too old to housetrain? Hi everybody, I'm going to apologize in advance in case this gets too long, lol. She is almost 3 yrs old and has been home with me for 1 month now. She was trained at her previous home (with a doggie door and pee pads). When I first brought her home she wouldn't pee outside because she had never had to be on a leash to pee before. She would hold it until she was absolutely desperate because she refused to use the pee pad or to pee on the lino, she'd pee on the carpet immediately if she got a chance. Her previous home had no carpet so I think she thought it was better to go there than to go on the lino (she knew that was a no no from before). I kept her in the bathroom with a babygate when I couldn't watch her and she never went in there. The trouble is now she's finally learned to go outside on the leash (about 90 % of the times when I take her out), which is great but she's also decided that it's OK to pee or poop on the bathroom floor if she has to go while she's in there. Even if I put a pee pad in there she won't use it. So I'm wondering if I should start putting her in her crate when I can't watch her. Will she ever learn that she can't go in the house if I never let her loose? As long as I'm home and keeping an eye on her I can take her outside and she's good, it's the rest of the time I'm wondering about. I'm just not sure really why she refused to use the pee pads here when she was already used to them and why she has now decided that it's OK to pee on the lino when she wouldn't when she first came home here. Does anyone have any ideas? I guess what I want to know is will she learn if I have to start from the beginning with crating her like you do a puppy or is she too old to retrain? I hope this makes sense and I'd appreciate any advice I can get. I love her to pieces already and there's no danger that we'll get rid of her because of having these problems. I told my husband that the worst thing that would happen is that we'll have to get rid of the carpet and put in laminate, lol. I'm not sure if he was impressed or not but at least he didn't say no. Thank you all so much for any help you can give me. Kathy, |

| I think it's never to late to train a Yorkie. They are very smart, after all. It may just take more time as they get older, you can try to reward her greatly after she goes potty in the right place (with treats and use lots of praise). After time, I think she can "get it". Good luck! |

| It is not too late to train her . I really think it is funny to hear peoples talking about a yorkie that can't learn because he or she is over a year or two . Yorkie are extremely smart dog so IMO he or she can learn at older ages too . |

| I got Sabrina when she was two. She had used pads and a doggie door before I got her. I have worked hard with her(4 months now) and she is about 98% house-broken. She is crated when she is home alone. She still suprises me by peeing right in front of me, but generally she is an angel.

I'm betting she'll soon be 100% trained to potty outside! Just keep up the praise and treats for doing that! Good luck!

| I've only trained puppies, but I do know change is difficult for them and it is probably just going to take a little longer. Give it time. Like I said, change is hard for them because they are creatures of habit. Change is hard for people, too, especially the older we get!

| I really appreciate all your thoughts guys. Just when I was really beginning to wonder if I was getting anywhere the last couple of days she's been doing just great!! The bathroom floor was clean this morning! No pee pads either, she just held it all night, from 10 pm till about 6:30 this morning! ( it wasn't because she wasn't used to the pee pads cause I got the same kind the breeder was using) anyway my husband would just as soon not use pee pads and I don't think I have to worry cause she really seems to be getting it now. I think she's even starting to try to tell me she needs to go. If she's sleeping on my lap sometimes when she wakes up she gets all bouncy and kind of bonks me on the face with her little nose, lol. If I ask her if she wants to go outside she gets all excited. Pretty good huh? She's doing it right now in fact (she's sitting on the desk in front of me while I try to type this), better take her out to make sure. Talk to you all later and thanks again, Kathy |

Way To Go, Gypsy!!! It's funny because it was exactly the same with Joey. I told my husband "It's hopeless. I'm a failure at potty training. We're going to have to live with newspaper for the rest of his life". A couple of days later, it was like a lightbulb went off for him and he's had very few accidents since. One thing you might consider, Kathy, is a way for her to tell you that she needs to go. I've used a bell hanging on the back door knob with several dogs now and it's worked extremely well. Others teach their dogs to bark at the back door or scratch at it. {Of course, if she continues with the nose bonk thing, you won't need anything else! LOL!} Give her a kiss for me!
