| New Yorkie Owner :) Well hello my name is Brittney and recently just got a yorkie and his name is Gizmo. He is 10 weeks old and is a ball of fire and so sweet. I have a 87lb lab/german shepard mix and he is so much different then having a big dog its a whole new experience for me and my husband, we feel as though we started all over again with learning how to handle a puppy as both dogs are so much different! Ive never been apart of a forum before and thought now with so many puppy questions now would be a great time to join one. My husband seems to have no patience for him as Gizmo takes more to me then him. So its pretty much just me i take him potty in the night, wake up and feed him early in morning before i go to work and my husband does go home on lunch to let him out then its all me again when i get home from work. Somedays its pretty overwhelming when im trying to get things done and watch him to make sure he dont potty in the house. I am doing crate training as thats what we did with our other dog as we are at work all day. Im very patient with him and dont mind doing it all, but i hope i can potty train him as ive heard horror stories of some never really bein potty trained. So thats just a tid bit for now |

| It is difficult, to say the least, to potty train a dog when you are gone most of the day. A small puppy has a small bladder and has to go more often. I have seen on this forum that many of the people who work use X pens instead of crates. In the Xpen the puppy has room to mover around and pee pads to go potty on as well as the needed food and water. A puppy cannot go for hours in a crate without having to go. This is a good set up if you have to be away from home. Much of the crate training info that is out there is inaccurate and has caused a lot of suffering for puppies. When you are at home you must keep that pup with you at all times. You cannot let it wander on it's own. I used to keep my pup on a leash and it would go with me where ever I went in the house. You have to learn the signals it gives when it has to go. It is a big undertaking to take on a small puppy. It takes a lot of time and patience to train a puppy properly. I hope things work out for you. It is going to take time. It does not happen over night or even in a few weeks time. There are "sticky" listings on training a Yorkie on this site and they are good reading. There are other discussions on the forum on this subject also. I hope things work out for you. Best wishes |

| yah i know it took alittle longer to train our other dog in a crate but i believe consistency is the key. I thought about the xpen but i feel like that would be double the training, by having him go in a crate while were gone and then when were home teaching him to go potty outside i feel would be 2x the more training then if i just keep at what im doing. My husband goes home on lunch so in morning hes in kennel for 4 hrs and afternoon its 4 hrs as well and i guess today he did good he didnt have an accident when my husband went home to let him out so im sure itll get there itll just take time and im prepared for that. But lately at night hes been getting up every two hours to go potty and sometimes just thinking he can play but then i put him back to bed right away once i know he dont have to potty and just wants to play with leaves or what not lol. I watch him pretty good hes only had an accident twice in two weeks bc i wasnt watching him close enought but usually i can tell when hes gota potty so ill take him out right away. My husband gets frustrated bc he cant tell at all when he has to

| Congratulations. I also have a Gizmo and he is 18 months old now. When we were potty training it was hell but we kept at it and he's pretty much perfect now. I highly recommend a pen of some sort. It helped with the toilet training as he was enclosed in one place but he also had a safe place to retreat to when all the loving got too much. Having a puppy is hard work but worth it! |

| Years ago I brought home 3 poodle puppies, all male (no Im not insane or atleast at that time I wasn't). I used our 70lbmale dog to help potty train the babies and teach them all of the other commands that they needed to know. Our big dog became the guardian of the little poodles. They are all still with us and have a very nice relationship. Now that the big guy is much older,15yrs,the poodles tell him when it is time to go out and eat. Yorkie babies, really are like little kids.Congrats and I hope that you enjoy your new baby! |

| Hi and welcome to Yorkie Talk. With potty training I agree with the others that it takes time, praise, patience, and love. Which i'm sure you are already doing.

| Keno is the first yorkie I have had, and he was very easy to house train. I used a crate and he was good by 6 months. I have had poodles, keeshone and bichon frise and none were as easy to house train as my big boy Keno. He is large for a yorkie, 11 lbs. and 15 inches high. 10 Months old. Welcome to Yorkie Talk. |

| I am not trying to be snarky at all, but do you leave food and water in the crate? Your puppy is alone for four hours, and not having food and water for that amount of time can be deadly for a yorkie. Did the breeder that you got your puppy from explain hypoglycemia to you? It is unfortunately all too common in yorkies (and other tiny breeds.) I would really look into the xpen, and while it may mean more work for you, it will certainly be healthier for your puppy. |

| I would encourage you once again to consider the x pen for your pup. Being in a crate 8 hours a day and then having to spend the night in a crate is a lot of confinement for a puppy or a dog. Dogs need tons of exercise and being so closely confined for so many hours is tormenting for a dog. It may have something to do with why you pup is not sleeping well at night. He is sleeping during the day since he has nothing else to do. If he was in an x pen with some toys he would at least have something to do during the day. |
