| For all of you with dogs with LP Syd was diagnosed with LP about 6 months ago. The vet did not want to even think about surgery at this time, but she recomended that we start giving her a daily dose of Glucosamine and doing 20 minutes of water therapy a week to strengthen the muscles around her knees. We are also supposed to keep her from jumping (yeah right). This all seemed to be going well until about a month or so ago. She has started waking up in the morning very stiff and sore. She is fine once she gets moving...but for about the first 1/2 hour she arches her back and can't put her full weight on her back legs. I'm worried. She has a vet appointment coming up at the begining of the new year so I'll ask the vet about it then. But in the meantime...have any of you experienced this? She acts like a arthritic old woman and she in only just 1-year-old. I bought her a memory foam matress for her crate to try to help take some of the pressure off of her joints. But I can't tell if it is helping yet or not. |

| Poor little thing. None of mine have serious problems w/LP luckily although when Chai was a puppy the vet said she had one leg which was slight but she has never exhibited any problem from it and it may have corrected as she developed. She will be one on December 4th. From my experience a second opinion from a homeopatic vet is always well worth the money. Not only do they have some natural "cures" that that almost borderline miraculous, they usually try all non-invasive alternatives before resorting to surgery. Just an idea. |

I would seek a second opinion immediately. You need an orthopedic surgeron one who is well versed in toy dog skelton/structure. This to me sounds like she may have some pretty serious issues going on. 1) she may have a grade 3 or 4 patella by-lateral.....both knees. Sometimes the lower leg bones are out of sink with the upper leg bones.....I mean shifted/twisted either to the right or left.....this needs a qualified ortho vet to determine the extent of problem. OR 2) the symptoms you describe above could be more serious than patella.....she may have "leggs perth disease"....this is a disease of the hip joint.....it occurs in many toy dog breeds and is considered an inherited disease. The good news is....it is cured with surgery. The dog will live a completely normal painfree life. they "may" have a slight limp...that is all. Most important is to relieve the pain she is experiencing.....a medication like Duramaxx works wonders. Also exersise is problematic for a dog with this condition....meaning causes more pain. Good luck and please update when you find the problem. D | |

With all due respect.....a homeopatic vet is NOT a good choice for problems with the structure/skeleton. Trying to wait and find a "natural cure" can add to the dogs pain and suffering. IMHO. Do not misunderstand I do believe in homeopatic or natural healing for some internal/external problems......just not for problems of a serious nature with the dogs skelton....I say again please seek the advice of a qualified ortho surgeon. | To confirm, are you referring to LP as Luxating Patella or Legges Perthes ?? The "LP" can mean two different issues. Either way, I suggest a second opinion as both need attention.

| I don't know anything about Legges Perthes disease...and I'm about to do some research on it. But the problem is definately in her knees and not in her hips. I can feel the joint popping in and out even when she is standing still. I am mostly afraid that it has become more severe over the past few months since she was not fully grown when she was diagnosed. Maybe surgery will be an option now. She doesn't seem to be in pain...it just seems like stiffness with maybe a little weakness in the morning when she hasn't been moving around at all. She sleeps so soundly that she is in the same position that she fell asleep in 8 hours earlier. I'm going to look into a orthopedic expert here...but I have a feeling that there isn't one. |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Our vet told us that Sailor has one really loose knee but he wants to avoid surgery until she is older...so for now he has her one a children's asprin once a day to help with the inflamation...so far we have not noticed her in pain or having any trouble!! I would try and get a second opinion to get more options...
