| Looking for some info Hi everyone I am new here. I currently have a 5 month old Maltese who is the center of my world. In the future we are going to add another pooch or two-though we're talking a few years here. I have always loved yorkies, but I admit, that is based off looks alone. I can read all the books and articles I want on temperament but lets be honest-those are all generic descriptions. I would like to hear from all of you about your yorkies. The impression I have so far is that they are just a bit more strong headed than the maltese (generally speaking). The reason I'm asking is because my husband has had horrible experiences with them. His aunt had one that was a nasty little dog who would growl at people and try to bite them. I have met few, and the few that I have, have been ill behaved in public, and I admit I have not had the chance to get to know one well. I am assuming, at this point, that these encounters have been due to poor upbringing? I am hoping that's what it is at least, as I would still really like to add one to our home some day. I also have read a lot about them being incredibly difficult to potty train. This was said about the Maltese as well though, and so far we are doing really good with our Rocky's training. He's five months, and almost there-the accidents we do have, I feel, are human error. Any idea if it's about the same for Maltese vs Yorkie? Thanks for reading, and I look forward to hearing some feedback from you |

| I may not be the best person to answer this because I love my Yorkies to pieces! However, I will give you my opinion. I have two females right now. Strong headed, yes. Both of mine can be very stubborn when they want to be. But so can their momma so I have dealt with it. I do think behaviors have a lot to do with how they have been raised. I think if you let them have those types of behaviors then they will use them. I do not have an aggressive problem with either of my girls. They will bark if you ring the door bell but then want to jump in your lap and give you lots of Yorkie Kisses. Potty training was not an issue for either of my girls. I think the number one thing is consistency. I felt like Rosie trained very easily and Mikki was already potty trained when I got her. With that said, I have a friend with a male that has a lot harder time than I did. I don't know if it is the difference in a male or female or what. Hope that helps! Good luck with your decision!!

| You came to the right place to do research. You can type in a subject and get information on almost anything. In my opinion, how Yorkies behave is directly linked to how they are trained or not trained. I know a lot of Yorkies and most are well behaved. I think house training takes longer because people aren't as watchful as they would be with a Great Dane puppy. Tiny mistakes are not always found right away. Personality is an individual thing, just like it is with people. I hope this helps. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I've got two yorkies who are wonderful with kids, strangers and other dogs. My mom's 2 are nippy. I can only assume it's the upbringing. Potty training has been a challenge, but if you are consistent and vigilant it's something you can handle. I did find it easier to train my female than my male, but that could be due more to their individual personalities rather than their sexes. Good luck with what ever you decide.

| So far potty training to me has been a bit of a challenge but like a previous poster said, most of it is due to our error. She consistent goes on her pad if she can reach that area. I forget to open the gate sometimes. lol To me her piddles and poops are so little that it not a big deal to me. I just have to be vigilant.

| Thanks for the input guys I'm really excited, I know it's still a ways off but I think yorkie would fit in with us just fine. I'm kind of hoping for a girl, right now I am a little out numbered in the house. (We have a male African Grey too) |

| Personally I believe Yorkies are one a few breeds with very breed specific characteristics. I have a Yorkie mini schnauzer house hold Schnauzers are very independent & Yorkies very dependent ImHO. The mini schnauzer will go lay down on her bed to rest, the Yorkie under my chair if I'm in it. You should spend as much of your free time on here reading as much as possible-after a bit you'll catch on to whom knows what they are talking about and those that might be a bit off. Make sure a Yorkie is going to be the right breed for your home. I've only met a couple Maltese, and one was a Yorkie/ Malt mix so as far as I can tell there is a slight difference. Check out Yorkie health issues and specific breed issues. Grooming is about the same as a Malt, diet etc. I personally think some Yorkies carry on a bit more 'center of attention' personality over the Malts, but also Yorkies were working dogs in two forms, lap warmers & ratters.

| I have a yorkie female who is 16 pounds. She can be strong minded and stubborn at times but is a good dog she doesn't want you to do certain things for her like pick her up to put her on a piece of furniture you either have to provide stairs or she will jump because she wants to do it herself and if you make her mad she will not look at you even if you say her name until she decides to get over it lol. She was potty trained by 9 months old and most potty training accidents are due to human error. She loves people and kids like crazy and if anyone is crying she wants to give them kisses. She is so full of life throwing toys and bones and sometimes her bed around but she listens very well and picks up on a lot of the words I say. Most yorkies I have run into around here are normally nice and friendly. I think a lot of it has to do with training and lack of it. I think yorkies are very smart dogs Callie has very much proven that to me as well as some of the videos on here of all the tricks some have learned.
