Yorkie Talker | How old should my yorkie be beore I let him breed?? Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a specific age a male should be in order to breed. I am assuming a year old, but hes humping my poor cat 4 times a day.

| HAAHAHA!!! Breed??? Why not neuter? You don't want to start a "new designer" breed... 1/2 cat, 1/2 Yorkie

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | If you breed him, he'll do a lot more than just hump the cat. Breeders really make sacrifices for the breed, their dogs aren't pets they are working dogs, and will have a whole set of problems that pet owners don't face. Also, we do have a serious pet problem in this country and thousands of dogs are put to death each year because there aren’t enough homes. The only dogs that should be bred are those who have passed a series of tests, health and confirmation tests. Also, breeding is no easy thing, just because your dog is an excellent example of the breed, you need to be able to predict how his offspring will look when mated with some female, and this of course means, knowing how to read pedigrees. Here’s a couple of excellent threads. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...-answered.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...t-breeder.html Please do as much research as possible before you let some backyard breeder turn you into one!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | LOL! alleykattkim, you say that you assume he's 1 year old, you don't even have his pedigree? Seriously, you should get him fixed as soon as possible, the puppies will sell for less than the vet bills.

| A dog should only be bred if he is a good representation of the breed, and not bc you think he's cute and he'd make cute puppies. All puppies are cute. Plus an unaltered male who has been bred is much harder to take care of than one who has never been bred, or one who has been neutered. He will likely run away when he senses a female in heat or mark more, for example. Please reconsider breeding him. There are already millions of animals in need of good homes, don't add to the pet population.

| A stud dog will hump a lot more than a neutered dog. His behavior will get worse, not better, if you breed him. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Sorry I read your post wrong, I thought you meant you were assuming your dog was a year old. Sorry about that! Anyways puppies love to hump, and Joey did it until about a month after he was neutered. I think AKC say 7 months is youngest for male.

Read the links provided, by another poster. Humping as a puppy, is pretty normal, and your cat will get over it, but if you decide to breed this boy, without all the proper tests, are you prepared to shoulder the financial, emotional, burden of having pups that might be less than well. Breeding is a serious proposition and as the stud owner, a responsible breeder will a) championship their dog, b) do all the pre breeding tests, such as CERF;s, xrays, thyroid, physical exam for LP, heart, brucellosis. etc. Oh and btw in Ontario the brucelosis test is over $200 alone. You are as responsible as the female's owner for the health of the pups you decide to create. Please breed for the right reasons, and not because of any humping your male pup may be exhibiting. Instead gently correct that humping, and it will either go away completely or be pretty well non-existent.

| No. Get him neutered and invest in a good training course.

| I have been on YT long enough to hear that breeding a male and keeping him un-neutered will cause more mounting/humping, restlessness, potential marking all over the place inside and outside, plus the chance of many unwanted puppies should he ever get out and breed with a bitch in heat he runs into. There are so many puppies and dogs needing homes, a rescue could be a good way to potentially save a life and get another pet, if that is what you want.
