| New Yorkie Owner Hi all! I'm a brand new Yorkie owner, adopted a 9 week old male from a friend who adopted him a week earlier and was unable to keep him. He is ONLY 1 1/2lbs! I need any advice/information I can get!! He came with vet papers confirming he received his first shots and was wormed with Strongid, I'll be bringing him to my vet today to be looked at and wormed again, since he is around my 3yr old son and I'm trying to avoid any health risks since though I've met her, I don't know his breeder personally. He seems to be adjusting well, very playful and very sleepy on and off. I've been feeding him Purina puppy chow 3x daily, and giving him NutriCal twice to avoid hypoglycemia, especially when he doesn't eat much. I believe he's teething because he's constantly chewing on toes and fingers, but it is in a very playful manner. He also itches quite a lot, but is free of fleas. I made a small room for him in a closet (no door) that is close to my room. One end has a bed and some toys, the other has water and a pee pad I've been training him with. He seems to always use the pad overnight when in his room. He cries in the night at times, and while I got up with him almost every hour the first two nights, I've been letting him whine it out a little in his room as long as everything is okay. He goes in at about 11pm, I check on him at 2:30am and spend a little time with him if he's up, then get up between 5:30-6am to feed him. I read that it is easy for these puppies to get stressed, so I've been trying to keep him away from too many people. Unfortunately I have a large family and he's been around quite a few. It doesn't seem to have affected him negatively, but we'll be home without visitors the next few days just to be safe. I'm quite the worrier, so I'm a little afraid now that all this transition (mom & other puppies, breeder, friend, now here with me) is going to have an unhealthy impact on him. (NOTE: For any of those who read this and are worried about this small puppy being in a home with my 3 year old son, please rest easy. My son is extremely gentle, and even with that is never even for a second left alone with the puppy due to his size and age. I realize even though my son would never mean to hurt the puppy that household accidents are a real danger for these small puppies, and every precaution possible is being taken to ensure his safety. He is already very loved.) PLEASE, any information at all that you feel could be beneficial would be greatly appreciated!! Constructive criticism is also very welcome. I really want this little guy to grow up healthy, happy, and well adjusted. There is a lot of information online to cipher through, so I would much rather get it straight from those who have lived through it! Thank you so so much in advance!! |

| Hi there, Sorry I don't have any advice or suggestions, but I did want to welcome you to YorkieTalk. So glad you joined. I am fairly new also, but have learned so much by being here. I hope you enjoy it, too. By the way, what is your little puppy's name? I'm sure someone will come along very soon who will help you with your questions. Welcome again!
