Roach back Ok, after I read a post yesterday, I have been searching for pictures and explanations of a Yorkie with roach back- horrible expression. So does anyone have a picture of this or can you explain it in detail? thanks- of course, I am looking, looking at my Yorkie because I want to know if she had it.

I cannot post pics ( not puter smart) but I have pics on my puter of puppies that are roach back. Their tails are low set, their necks are short and they sorta look as if they are looking up all the time. If you want to see the pics PM me with your e-mail addy. I bet there are others out there..

No, Villette, you don't have them. I keep them stored so that I can send them to the person who asks "How do I pick a GOOD puppy?" These are the ones you DO NOT pick..I will send them to you ASAP..

I would really like to see your pictures, your description is not what I had pictured in my mind when I heard the term "roach back".

I forgot that they also look as if their front legs are shorter and the back ones look longer..their backs look like they are hunched..well, they are hunched..The parents were very poor quality, obviously, and these were the puppies..

| Rini, does it affect their health, or is it just a physical thing? He looks so uncomfortable. Is he in pain?

Thanks everyone for the help in explaining this problem with Yorkie babies. I feel better knowing what it is and will certainly put it on the list of what to look for when I get my next yorkie baby. My little KimMee does not have this fault but she did have an inguinal hernia and has not lost her baby teeth. The vet says they need to be pulled. anyway thanks again- i enjoy all the info I learn here.

Sherry Lynn, I don't have any idea. These babies have such a history but the breeder sold the mom who weighed 12 pounds and was butt-ugly. I know we always say we never saw an ugly Yorkie, but, believe me, that mom was one ugly one. She usually just sells her puppies to the person with the money and that is the end of it. So, I doubt that she is in pain but I really don't know..

| Hmmm... Jasper? Gee, after reading this, I think my old guy Jasper was a roach back! I just never had a name for it before. It did not seem to bother him much, but his back legs were indeed longer than his front, and he had a little humpy back. It did not stop us from adoring him, and did not seem to cause him any trouble. We always knew Jasper was full of defects from the time we took him home from the pet shop. It was obvious to us that he came from a puppy mill. But we never tried to breed him, and loved him bunches all his life, not matter how funny he looked.

The cause is usually very poorly bred parents and relatives..You can see it on young puppies when they start to get up on their feet at around 5-6 weeks..
