| Too soon for rabies vaccine? My shorkie will get her final puppy shot in 2 weeks just before she's 4 months old. Then I was told to come back in a week for the rabies shot. She's almost 3 pounds. Has anyone had a bad reaction to this vaccine with small dogs like mine? |

| At our former vet, Maximo had all of his shots in one day at about the same age as your pup. He did not have a reaction, luckily. Now I separate the rabies vaccine from all others by 3 weeks. I would also wait until a pup is 5 to 6 months old, at least, before doing the rabies. Weight is another consideration. I would not give a 3 pound pup the rabies vacc. That is why it is better to wait. Check out the vaccination schedule info in the library section for more information.

| I thought rabies was not to be given until at least 6 months? Am I right or wrong?

| Thanks I think you are all right. It didn't sit well with me giving her a rabies shot this early. Plus my town gives until 6 months for the vaccine to be given for licensing. |

| I don't like the idea of a little one getting a rabies shot too soon. I held out until Zoey was 8 months old. I had her spayed at 9 months so I had to get the shot. Cherie

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Glad you live in one of those places that understand the dangers of giving the rabies shot too soon. Most Yorkies are not outdoor dogs, so getting the shot isn't as important to them as a dog who spend his time hunting outside. We waited till 6 months and I've been told never give the shot with other shots, if there's a reaction, you don't know which shot caused it.
