| Behavioral Issues, anxeity?? Hey guys, I have a male yorkie and hes about 8 months old now. When we got him at 10 weeks old he had really bad separation anxeity issues. We eventually got over that, but we are still having a few issues with him. Hes very hyper and I know hes still a puppy. He seems to be overly anxious and nervous and I am not sure how to handle this. The vet recommended that we try training classes earlier and we did take him to a training class when he was 5 months old. Really did not get much out of that except for him socializing with other dogs. Things that I am noticing are...he walks in circles over and over when hes anxious, feeding time, potty time and walking on a leash (very difficult). Hes extremely terrified of strangers. Had company yesterday with 7 people at my house and he pooped and peed on the floor and peed on my grandmother. He also piddles when hes excited or scared. Last month we took a short vacation (only 3 days) and when we returned he acted like he was scared to death of us, like he didnt know us?? I could deal with the anxious piddles, but I dont know what to do to help him with the other issues. Have any of you guys dealt with this in a dog before?? How did you approach the issue?? My other 2 yorkies have never acted like this. I have been thinking about taking him back to the vet or maybe he needs one on one training from a trainer?? I dont think the breeder socialized him very well as he has always been like this from day one.. Any suggestions.... Thanks so much!! |

| I really think you need to get a personal trainer that will spend one on one time with him and I agree he has socialization issues that sounds like he had since he was at the breeder, was he kept in a cage?

| My Mylee is similar to this except she does not have the fear of people or timid around people. She is overly social, turns the circles when anxious, has separation anxiety, barks at me when I try to leave to the point of grabbing my leg (and trying to nip), she's a runner, would not come to me, etc. My approach has been to train, train, and train. I believe she is very very intelligent and needs that mental stimulation. We have worked so hard on training, that I can see when she's thinking about what I am asking her to do, and she has come such a long way, and I am so proud of her. She catches on so fast and wants more. I believe you have to be consistent with everything you do. Consistency provides stability. At least I can see it does for Mylee. Mylee has been one of the most challenging dogs I have ever had, but I have had the most satisfaction from our progress as well. She tries so hard.

| Have you tried Rescue Remedy by Bach Flowers? It is available at Wholefoods or you can find on line. There is a Pet formula that is alcohol free and works great with anxiety issues. Might be all your puppy needs to help him settle down. I would continue with the socialization and try to not cater to his needyness during those sessions. Ask friends or relatives to stop by on a regular basis for brief visits too. You may consider playing with him in the house to help burn some of his energy. I play with Hans several time during the day for 5 minute periods...helps keep him happy and gets me off the computer! Be patient and give him time. They are creatures of habit try and keep things on a scheduled routine for him, you might try leaving and returning everyday for a few minutes at the same time using the same phrase "...we'll be back". Upon your return, praise him like crazy and give a fab treat! |

| I dont know if he was caged as a puppy. We were unable to see his home life before we got him due to him being so far away from us in location (lession learned).. All I know is that he absolutely hated being crated or caged when we got him. We still have a hard time at night with him. We have to keep his crate in our bedroom at night by the bed. He does pretty good during the day. I hate to keep him caged during the day, but he still is not completely potty trained and chews up everything at this point. Hopefully soon he will graduate from the x-pen and have free range of the house while we are away. I have not tried the rescue remedy. I just hate trying to give him somethin because it stresses him tremendously. He fights me tooth and nail if I try to restrain him for anything. But I need to try something to help him. | Has he had a thorough neurological check? If he has he may just need something for anxiety. (Some dogs are on prozac and do well) Five months is usually earlier than most group training - most prefer at least 6 months, but some are smart and can do it at 5 months. Hope you find the solution soon.
