New here.... Hi all, I took in a 9 month old puppy yesterday. He is half Yorkie and half Shih-tzu. He has been neglected and has no training. He was left in a kennel most of the time and put outside the rest of the time. He has never been allowed to walk free through a house before, he is so fascinated by everything! I've had dogs before but I've never had to train a puppy so I think I'll be here often looking for advice.

| Welcome! Bless your heart for giving the little guy a loving home. I'm sure with time and patience he will be the most loving and loyal little fella. My friend has the same mix and she is a wonderful girl. Share some pictures with us...we LOVE pictures here.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I put his picture up as my avatar. I think the kids and I have finally settled on a name...Ranger! He had a name, Joshy, but he doesn't know it. He gives no response to it all. Hopefully, with a loving family around him, he will learn his new name though.

Welcome to you and Ranger. Nice that you can outdoor train him in the summer. I would expect you get a good deal of snow in Canada and you probably can have him trained before winter. Many of us raise and / or train dogs, so you will get plenty of good advice. I like the Monks method and I think it is the fastest way to train older dogs. (Especially one who already potties in their crate) You can not really crate train them because they have been forced to pottie where they eat and sleep. Instead use a 5 or 6 foot leash and harness to tether them to yourself. They will go every where with you. Set a schedule of about every 2 to 3 hours to take them to their preselected pottie spot. When they pottie there praise and treat. I work with rescues and have found Shih-tzu are smart and not too difficult to housebreak as a general rule. I think Yorkies are harder, but this method usually works in about 10 days. God Bless You.

I do not mean they will be fully pottie trained in 10 days, but they will understand going outside or on the pee-pad earns praise and pets. Going anywhere else is a no no.
