| Anyone try the thundershirt for an anxious dog? Gizmo is extremely anxious during car rides. He paces, twirls in circles, pants and barks uncontrollably. I have tried rewarding him when hes quiet but that seldomly ever happens. We have had him now for 11 months and we thought that he would get used to the car rides but that hasn't happened. I want to try either the thundershirt or a tip that was on Cesare Milians website ( He said to buy some lavender oil, put it on your hands and let the dog smell it during enjoyable activities such as walks or feeding time. That way the dog associates that smell with a fun activity and a calm environment) I am attaching the website for the thundershirt for you yorkielovers to look at. What should i do? | Ahh!! I was going to post this exact thing tonight! Kimbo is always very excited to get into the car, but hates it once we're in there. He barks and whines the entire time. We've really been practicing with him in town a lot this past year and he's better, but still isn't happy. I saw an ad for the Thundershirt and am willing to try anything. We have to travel 30 miles into the next town to get to our vet and nobody ever wants to make that drive. I have to wear earplugs because the barking hurts my ears deep inside. I love my boy and hate to see such a happy guy so upset.

| I have one for Kissy during the fireworks or t-storms. It didn't work for her...the velcro freaked her out more than the thunder!! I think it works for some. |

| Check out this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...p-anxiety.html It works incredibly for Cooper during storms. We are also using it sometimes when he stays home alone as well as when someone mows the lawn.

| Same exact situation with Gizmo. I drive to San Diego from LA a lot to visit family and my head is pounding by the end of the 2 hours! I found a store that sells a similar product up here near me i may call them tomorrow and see about giving it a shot. Its not the thundershirt but something similar... |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I think a Thundershirt is worth a try. I have one who shakes during thunderstorms and fireworks, and the shirt definitely takes the edge off. It's not exactly a miracle cure for us, but it's a noticeable improvement. We put it on him any time he seems anxious. I wouldn't give up on the treat idea. Maybe do some training sessions where you do something fun in the car when it's not moving. Toss a favorite toy. Give him a favorite chew toy, like a stuffed Kong or a bully stick. Start slow, just a few minutes a day until he gets over the fear of the unmoving car. After a week or two, start the car and keep playing. Later on, you can try driving a block or two, stop, play, etc. There's an over the counter product called Rescue Remedy that can calm them down too, but for me that's a last resort. Good luck! I feel for anyone with an anxious Yorkie.

| Thundershirt worked for my Paisley. She was so anxious during car rides that she would throw up. We had to take her to see a specialist over 2 hours away and thought...what have we got to loose? She was anxious at first but rode beautifully after about 5 minutes, and coming home she slept most of the way. It worked for us. Hope this helps. Laurie, Paisley & Harley |

| Yes it worked for Bogey for storms. Didn't totally cure him but if I put it on early before the storms start and then give him a dose of Rescue Remedy the combo does the trick. So shaking, panting or anxiety. I ordered one for Pebbles before the 4th of July and she was great with the fireworks this year.

| We live in Alabama. I bought the thundershirt for other anxiety reasons but after the tornadoes in April, I'm a big believer. Read the other thread for more details. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...p-anxiety.html

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I bought one for Pixie who suddenly at 5 1/2 became terrified of thunder. It helps calm her some but not completely. It stops her bad shaking but not her anxiety. Unfortunately I was cleaning out my closet last week and I think I accidently put it in either the garbage bag or the bag I gave to charity. Now I don't know if it's worth getting another one. It's starting to thunder here now and I will see how she does without it.

| I have one for Callie and use it for thunderstorms and fireworks and it works really well, Callie has even fallen asleep in it during a thunderstorm. If you order it and it doesn't work you can get your money back.

| I just returned ours. I don't know if it didn't work, per say. I mean, I guess it calmed him down a LITTLE. But I don't think his freakouts were bad enough to justify $45 or whatever it was. I just didn't notice any significant differences... I did just buy these Tranquil Tabs for the heck of it. They got great reviews on amazon and entirelypets. Jackson only has a few things he's scared of -- gunshots, fireworks, traveling in the RV makes him anxious too (when we are driving it). Thunderstorms don't bother him UNLESS it's really loud thunder, a loud bang will send him under the bed. So I just want something to take the anxiety away a bit in these very few and far between situations.

YT Addict | I actually picked one up at a local feed store about a month ago and haven't used it. When I finally opened it up to try it on Jenna this week, I discovered it was pitifully too small. So back to the store it goes. Hopefully they'll have another I can trade up for. How tight a fit do they have to be for maximum effectiveness? I'd gotten the XXS, which wouldn't have fit one of my house bunnies. So I'm looking at maybe a Small at the least, right? (Jenna is currently 6.8 pounds and longer/taller than most Yorkies I see.) My mom needs one too for her terrier mix. Poor thing's terrified of gunshots, fireworks and riding in the car. Peanut is at least one size larger than Jenna.
