Yesterday morning I woke to Pita barking loudly in the bathroom, which she never does. So I got up to see what the prob was and she was out of her kennel standing by the door!!

She sleeps in her kennel in our bathroom every night. She get tired around 9pm and get in it by herself to go night night. Well, I thought it was a fluke until the same thing this morning. Ugh....not sure what to do about this one. I can't let her sleep in our bed bc she is notorious for peeing on the comforter and she is only 5.5 mos old. Any suggestions?

not sure of what you mean by kennel but we use an expen. This allows for their beds, water and food, and pad in it. They can move around and play and have their toys too.

This is a wire kennel that she sleeps in, she somehow lifts the latch and opens the door on it and is able to get out in the mornings.

I need more info on the kennel.

Could it be that the spaceing between the wires are too wide?
Has she jiggled the latch open?

How did she get out?
Are you sure to latched the door?

I posted a pic above. She must jiggle it open. I made sure last night it was latched since it happened the morning before and she did it again. She loves the kennel, she goes in it when I am putting on my makeup. She goes in it freely when she's tired, so I know she likes it....I guess when you want out, you want out, lol.

I have had problems with my pups getting out also.
So I use a chain clip/ hook to secure the kennel door to the edge of the kennel. Any type will work. You can purchase them from TSC , wal Mart or even cut one off of an old leash. Just make sure it will do the job before you cut it. Or dont cut it at all either way will work just fine.

Oooo, what a great idea. I wanted something that would be quick to unhook and that would be perfect. Thanks so much for the help!!!

Maybe you can reinforce it with a tie of some sorts

Yorkies are VERY smart now that she knows how to get out she will continue to do it...I would just go and buy a baby gate, put it up at the bathroom door so she can't get out of the bathroom...leave the door to the crate open so she can go in and sleep put her food/water bowl on one side of the bathroom and a few potty pads on the other side...Good Luck.

I have an escape artist too. I figure (which in your case maybe a little to late) was not to let them see how you latch the door. Brandi would pay attention to how I put her in her ex-pen or kennel and would figure out how to get out the same way I would put her it.

When I put her in her kennel, I turned it around so that the latched door was up against the wall. It was the only way to keep her in. Of course that was ions ago, she pretty much has free rein of the house. I gave up on trying to keep her confined while at home. She can tolerate short periods but long periods forget it, it's non-stop barking. She hates her kennel because as a rescue from a back yard breeder, she lived most of her life in a kennel. So now she hates her ex-pen and her kennel especially after having a taste of freedom.

I just cannot get over how smart yorkies are. I think it's pretty amazing that she can lift that latch and get out of there. I just wish she would direct her amazing powers to potty training a little more...hehe.

Be careful using a clip from an old leash or that type,she can open this with her mouth and get her tongue or lip stuck in it.
When Mina started sleeping with us (she is not yet 6 months),I held her beside me. Now she thinks that she should be up against me at night.
