Last night at 1am in the Del Taco drive thru. Uni was with me. In my defense, he asked. But as soon as I started, I saw his eyes glaze over.

I can't think of any strange places but honestly, I am so sick of having that converstion! I am constantly asked if mine are teacups & mine are 4.5lbs -6lbs! It especially drives me crazy when another Yorkie owner asks!

And even better when they tell me they have a teacup! It makes my head want to explode.

Ok....I'm done with my rant.

I agree with the above post!

I have given up. My luck has it that everytime I am out at a petstore I run into a larger than standard and people always claims they have a 'teacup' because that is how their breeder sold it to them.

It is too much time consuming and not everyone is receptive. Sadly, I just learned to smile and walk away

I don't think anyone is going to be able to match your experience. Too funny!

My funniest experience was in Walmart, looking at Halloween sweaters. A woman held up a tiny, tiny sweater and boasted to me that it would be way too big on her teacup Yorkie. She asked what kind of dog I was shopping for as I held up a larger size. I said Yorkies, adding proudly, "Skyscraper Yorkies."

She was annoyed with me.

, I don't think I've told anyone except family. Honestly, I just feel like it's a lost cause, like I'll have the same results as discussing politics or something. Better for me to control my BP & avoid the debate. Besides, I have a chunky monkey so it never comes up on our end.

I'll add that if it was someone breeding or seeking a piece of china I would say something.

Does this count? Boyfriend once asked if Kaji was a teacup yorkie. Kaji was standing next to his morkie who is much smaller.

I just said there is no such thing and Kaji is a healthy weight.

Crap have we become type of crazy Stedford wives? What happens to YT members when the the word "teacup" is mentioned, and WHY does it bug us so much? The last time I gave the teacup speech, I was in Home Depot, and I could tell by the way they were looking at me, they thought I was nuts, I snapped out of it, and now people can use the word teacup and I don’t say a thing. The first few times my skin crawled though.

If they ask it about Joey, I still say he’s standard, but I don’t correct them when they call their 8 pound dogs teacups. Anyway, I believe pet owners can use this or any other word to describe their dogs, I find it as informative as “tinies”. Breeders should not use the word or advertise teacups, because it makes them sound like they haven’t studied the breed, and don’t know the correct terminology. They certainly should not breed teacups nor breed for them. I think it's okay to correct new Yorkietalk members, but I don't correct strangers anymore, and I still can figure out why I felt that need. I mean people have used words much worse than teacup around me, and I don't correct them on that.

Its not a weird place,but I was amazed at who I was talking to. I had an employee of Petsmart tell me that she was getting a "teacup chihuahua". I was VERY polite,the lady was very sweet. I did explain that although breeders use this term to SUCK buyers in. The AKC does NOT recognize the term "teacup" in any breed that I knew of. That it was a buzz word used to attract customers.
She was actually very nice and said that she needed the information,considering where she worked.
The term "teacup" kind of bothered my waaay before I owned a yorkie. My last poodle weighed 5lbs and the one I owned as a teen weighed less than 3lbs. Knowing what I know now,I am amazed that she lived to the great age of 13. I told people that they were just very little.

I'm not bothered by the word "teacup" at all. It's just a descriptive word and we know they are meaning smaller than average. Just like many people on here use "teapot" to mean larger than average.

The book, The Language Police, is a pretty good start.
Teacup is simply a descriptive term, nothing more, nothing less. To me, the term makes things clearer. I don't have "teacups" - if one means they are less than 4 pounds, but the word is hardly worth giving any more weight than the word "small". The AKC doesn't necessarily sanction "small" Yorkie either. If teacup is how the public chooses to recognize a "small" Yorkie I can't see the big deal. If it's small, it's small, thus if it's a teacup (per the definition that equates to "small") then it is in fact a "teacup" so if one looks like at that it does exist. It's now at the point it's growing weary.
It's like calling a horse "red" rather than calling it a sorrel, a horse "tan" rather than a dun. So what? I've yet to figure out why any one would care to the point of letting it upset them or why they feel the need to correct someone's choice of descriptive terms.
I can't imagine anyone, being asked to have a "Kleenex" passed would feel the need to correct someone by saying well, this isn't actually a "Kleenex", it's a generic store brand "tissue". (other than the Kleenex company of course but that's best reserved for copyright infringement 101)
