| Henry went Cujo on me! Need some advice...... Last night Henry and I were in my back yard so he could potty. He starts sniffing the air and then darts to the back fence. He is going crazy trying to sniff through the fence slats. He starts screaching and frantically scratching the fence. Then he starts digging up the dirt on the fence line while trying to fit his head under the fence. He does not listen to me to "come" to "stop" or anything. He is frantically trying to get to the other side of the fence. I try to pull him back to get his head from under the fence and he turns growls, snarls and snaps at me. I can't get him away from the fence. He is going non-stop digging under the fence. I got a broom and stuck the broom in front of the hole and Henry growled at me and tried to find another spot at the fence line. I finally pick him up and he again growls, snarls and snaps at me, getting my hand. However, his bite did not break the skin. If I had left him, he would have kept going until he could get under the fence. I took him in the house and put him in his crate to calm down for about 20 min. before I let him out of the crate. While he was in his crate, I went back outside to see if I could block off that portion of the fence that he dug under. That's when I noticed that there was a baby bird on the other side of the fence. It could barely walk and looked fairly new since it was still kinda wet. I've had a similar situation with Henry and birds (see a previous post by me), but Henry was full on Cujo. It was like he was on crack. What should I have done in this situation?? I'm sure it will happen again, and I don't want to get bit again. |

| Wow!! I have no advice but hope someone does! I figured it was a female dog he was after...not a bird!

| wow... I have not had anything like that with my yorkie. Now.. with the other guys.. I could see Sammy doing that. I think the broom was a good idea. You have to be sure he sees you as the boss, alpha dog as my kids say. You may have to do a training class or program.

I would have preferred it to be a female dog. That way the dog will go away. With the baby bird, it will stay in the area until it is able to fly....which is about a 2-3 weeks approximately..... if it survives in the surrounding area.

Well that's what I was wondering. Has anyone else had a yorkie be so focused on getting their "prey"? Henry has chased grasshoppers, but got bored with them and he did not act like he did last night.

My brother's dog (who's a Cairn) can get like that sometimes. Although he's never snapped, he has growled. It just took working with him. It'll be challenging because you're kind of working against instinct. But with Mac, I suggested that my brother take him out, with his favorite treat and basically treat it like potty training 101 all over again so his focus is on getting the treat, and not the bird. Also, my brother would distinguish a different part of the fence as potty time that he didn't have access to any animal, car, or sidewalk walker. Good luck! Keep us posted!

| Oh no! I'm sorry he got you. How about taking him out on a leash and harness? That way you have control over him without having to pick him up. Good luck with him.
