Donating YT 30K Club Member | Thundering since 9 pm and Pixie is in a panic We have been having non stop thunder since 9 last night. It is now 4:20 am and Pixie is still frantic. I have her thundershirt on and it hasn't really helped, except she wasn't shaking as much with it on. She is glued to my arms and has been panting heavy for 7 hours. I don't know what to do for her. Until 2 weeks ago she was never effected by thunder in the least. I am hoping the storm has passed now and we can finally go to bed. I just gave her her dose of tramadol for her other problem and she seems to be settling down a bit. HAs anyone used the thundershirt and have it not work the first time? Any other suggestions for fear of thunderstorms? Thanks

| Patti I'm so sorry about all the issue with Pixie lately. I was lucky enough that the Thundershirt worked immediately for Cooper. The only thing before that that uses to calm him a little was soft music. Also, I believe that there is a help forum for the thundershirt on this site Thundershirt | The Best Dog Anxiety Treatment Hopefully the storm has passed.

| Sorry I don't know if their is any thing you can do. My Queenie was so scared of thunder storms all she did was tremble uncontrollably till the storm was over. I would try to hold her but even that didn't work. Like people some are scared others are not. I hope your storm is almost over.

It has only helped a bit so far with Zoey who is scared of thunder. I was going to try to get a CD that had different sounds on it to see if we can de-sensitize her to thunder storms.

| I wonder if the new behavior is more of a fear thing. It's probably time to talk to the vet about giving her a tranquilizer during storms because that can't go on.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | The thunder storms have continued all night. We had a short break around 5 am and she fell asleep in the closet. Woke up to thunder at 7:30 am and expecting it most of the day and night. I think we need to talk again with her vet about what to do next since thundershirt didn't work. She has been panting heavy since 9 last night. I just don't know what brought on all this on. Thanks

| I use the Thundershirt for Bogey and he does best if it's on before any sign of the storms coming. So I have been paying close attention to the local weather and try to put it on him early. Last night I forgot to put it on him and he woke me up about 11ish shaking. I was so upset with myself for not remembering to put it on him. He was a mess but after having it on for a few hours and being awake with him he slowly calmed down. It's still storming here this morning and he has really settled down and is sleeping at my feet. Normally, he would be on my lap but when he has the TS on he lays on the floor next to my feet and if relatively calm. The TS needs to be pretty snug to work well. Do you have it on snuggle? I'd also leave it on her at length. The first week he wore it almost all day and even slept in it. I did take it off daily to brush him and fix his topknot. The other thing that I have done for him is give him a dose of Rescue Remedy in addition to the TS. This even further takes that nervous edge off. I know how upsetting it is to see our little ones so fearful of the storms but I know from my experience with Bogey the more I tried to comfort him the worse his behavior became. If I left him alone he did much better. I can't believe it's still storming! But after having the shirt on all night he is pretty settled down. Don't give up on it yet. It wasn't an immediate miracle fix for Bogey but it did help and continued to approve with a little tweaking.

| Poor baby. It is not fun to have a fear of something. Hopefully you will be able to find something to help her.

It didn't help with his storm issues so I use the TS for him. But I am still giving him the Anxitane daily.

| The thundershirt is a very good product, however I found for my dog an Ace bandage wrapped around the rib cage behind the front legs works so much better. The Ace bandage was a tighter fit which is what you want. Also, it is difficult not to hold or comfort them when they are having anxiety from thunder. It is best to be near them but not to touch or comfort. We read 3 books and hired a specialist for our dog. Their suggestions reduced the anxiety level tremendously. We had to learn when we comfort a dog while they are exhibiting bad behavior, we encourage that behavior. That was the hardest thing for me to learn because I thought my dog is distressed, I need to comfort him. Now I do an activity that I can sit or stay in the same place for 30 minutes or so. My dog will eventually calm down, sit or lie close by. Within 20 minutes, he is calm. It does not work the first time, you have to stay with it. About 3-5 times and he learned I would be there but not comfort him. The Ace bandage and not encouraging bad behavior cured our little dog. It is a difficult thing to deal with. I wish you luck. |

Patti, I sure hope this will work for you...I'm going to try this with Winston, he too is terrified of storms and the TS did little to calm him down the few times I have tried it. We woke up to the tornado sirens blaring today...I grabbed Winston and went to the basement in a hurry, luckily there was no tornado...just a very bad storm going through. Winston actually seemed much better in the basement...maybe he's smarter then I thought!!!

| I don't have this problem with my dogs. These dummys even want to go outside during thunderstorms. Doesn't both them a bit. We did "inherit" a cocker spaniel from our son's ex-girlfriend that was deathly afraid of thunderstorms. We finally ended up getting tranquilizers from the vet for her. It only helped a little bit though. Poor thing died from cancer only a couple years after we got her. I think that's the reason we ended up with the dog. Oh well, her last couple years were good years. We made sure of that. |
