YT Addict | Our first International Trip! Well.. Tikka's first. We're going from Northern Alberta to Iowa! Yeah...not that exciting for most people. But I haven't seen my family since Christmas! Pooter went with us at Christmas, and he didn't handle the busyness of all the people very well. So this time he's staying here with a friend [who I really hope will not feed him Ol'Roy as treats! I'll be talking to her about that this time... last time she did it after I asked her not to. Pooter was sick for a week! but she's the only person we know up here willing to take him!] Anyways, is there any advice you guys could give on long road trips? It's a 3 day ride for us! I'm afraid she's gonna hold her potty for 3 days or only go when she can't hold it any longer! Or that she'll be stressed out! She will also be staying at a friends house because we can't have her at the guest suite in the apartment in Iowa so anything to make her more comfortable in a home away from home??

| I uaually take in the car a bed for my two to lay in. There favorite toys. Food,a blanket for them to cuddle in and treats. Water and a small dish also their leeshes and their halters. also a bag for them to get into if something might happen along the way. When I stop for gas I take them to go potty befor we get on the road again. They seemed to be more confortable with familiar things around them. I hope this is some help. Have a wonderful trip. | I think it sounds like a great trip . Sorry, I don't have any tips, but I think if she has to go, she will let you know. Everytime you stop, assume she has to go too. Leash her up and take a little walk. Zhoie is easy, when it comes to the car and potty, but she hates riding in the car...errr . I have said pee pee before we get into the car, from the time she was small, she's a pee pee on comand So when we stop she knows the drill I agree, take things she is familar with, she will be much more cozy. Have a wonderful time with your family.

YT Addict | Yeah Tikka still doesn't go potty on a leash unless we are on a long walk... so I'm nervous about her holding it for 3 days! Yikes. But the home she's staying at has two other dogs and a fenced yard, so I'm happy about that...

| Get Tikka use to going potty on a leash now, before the trip. Take her bed, and her blanket with you in the car, so that it is familiar. Potty her every time you stop for gas (which will be about every four hours). Find a station with a large grass area away from the main road (like around back of the station). Keep her meal times the same. Take bottled water and a Tupperware bowl for her, as the water could be different and upset her tummy. I too worried about road trips with the fur babies. They just loved all the smells from other dogs at rest stops and gas stations. I tell you, it was instant potty every time! I didn't let them approach other dog's poos though. Treats and a favorite chew toy help pass the time too. Oh, and the sun can be very intense while on the road, so bring a towel along to block the sun or purchase a sun shade. In my opinion, towels work better. Your pup will become a world traveler in no time at all. Have a wonderful time with your family!

YT Addict | lol we have a 2 door cavalier [VERY small] so I'm thinking I will take the bedding from her crate and put it in her travel kennel with the same toys that are in her crate... that will kind of be like a bed. she has a seperate doggie bed but idk if it will fit lol if it does i'll bring it! Iowa will probably be hotter than Northern Alberta this time of year, although it gets super hot here too. I was thinking of trimming her hair before we go??

| I travel with mine on long trips with doggy beds, toys, blankies, collapsable food bowls etc. We stay at pet friendly hotels to not put burden on any family that may not possibly want pets as guests and to conserve our friendship lol I also take disposable potty pads, harness and leash etc. If you can, and have room a crate to contain if you must leave her alone and she will get into something. Leave with plenty of spare time for what ifs and to provide plenty of potty stops. Its no different than traveling with small kids. Have fun!!

| trips When Sprocket travels in the car I never have room for his bed, too much of my own stuff , so I use the afghan he nests in at home and I give him one of my much worn Tshirts. I purposely wear a really big old Tshirt days and days, DON'T wash it, I know, yuck, but it helps, smells like you, baby is as happy as can be in the travel, you don't have to give them meds, every time you stop for gas they pee in a new spot just like every other little kid trying out a "new" bathroom and when you hit the drive through for food for you, a "treat" you can order is a chicken patty, costs about $1, the plain one OR a turkey patty. OMG they think they have gone to little dog heaven. This is part of the travel treats or special-ness of going to visit and give it your family member name. Like going to Gramma's or what ever. Because it is a different area, be sure your baby is up to date on meds and do flea stuff just before you go, some of our areas are awful and like mine a year around hazard, Sorry to "talk" so much but really is fun to travel, you don't stress and neither will your little one, have fun.

| In September we moved from Alberta to NY. We still had the 2 dogs then. The little boy, who ha since passed away was not a good traveller, so the vet sedated him with Ace Promazine because he had collapsing trachea and she did not want hi panting and causing anymore damage. We just stopped every 1 1.2 to 2 hours and took them to a grassy area by the service stations to do their business and they did fine. Bring her toys, her bed and things that remind her of home and smell like home since she is not going to be staying with you. Would she feel better if she stayed behind with the other dog?

YT Addict | Haha TaxLady... I will def try that! wear a good sized shirt for the next 5 or so days lol and then put it in the kennel with her Maybe she'll like that, she's a total cuddler with me so maybe if she can cuddle with something that smells like me it'll help Where do you get those pattys? Any certain fast food place? [We dont eat fast food except when we're on the road or have a late night haha] And FosterMom, I wish she could stay with Pooter, but she doesn't get along with the lady's other [big schnauzer] dog, she runs and hides and whines/yelps because their dog is sooooo hyper :/ SO i don't want her to be stressed for 2 weeks. Pooter does well with their dog because he sticks up for himself and nips the dog on the nose as to say "calm down I don't like your rowdiness" and she totally leaves him alone. Plus Tikka has a UTI and is on meds/in diapers so I don't want someone else to be incharge of her pills and she's going to get spayed while we're in Iowa. [$250 in Peace River vs $80 in Des Moines!] The people she's staying with in Iowa are going to give us a key to their house so we can go over there whenever we want and hang out with tikka

[We dont eat fast food except when we're on the road or have a late night haha] In our area we have a Carls Jr or Jack in the Box, most anything like that, that has a broiled chicken sandwich you can order just the patty AND if Tikka is still taking her meds you can hide them in it, no harm no foul and there's a lot less stress/worry for you and Tikka if she's with you and not left behind. Really it's just like taking a little kid on a trip, except easier, little dog doesn't whine about stopping all the time and it excited to have different food, it's a treat, just watch out for the ice cream!!!! LOL Oh the other great thing about traveling with little dog, they don't have quite as much stuff, not QUITE. LOL
