| Leash Or No Leash!? I put Marley on a leash when he goes outside to go to the bathroom. I heard this is bad I never pull him or force the leash thou. Should I just let him go outside with out the leash,I'm affraid he's going to run away. I have a bug backyard but at night it's so dark or will he stay by myside? I dont want to do anything to bother his little throat so please let me know! thank you! |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Get a harness instead of a collar. That way, the pressure is not on his neck when the dog pulls. I'm sort of a do-as-I-say, not-as-I-do person, though. I use a collar because that's what they recommend in obedience. But I'm as careful as I can be and try not to let him pull at the leash.

| We don't have a fence so Loki goes outside on a leash. We have one of those Flexi leads. I would never EVER trust him not to run away. When we go on walks I use his easy walk harness. I'm not a fan of the traditional harnesses. He's a bigger Yorkie at 7 pounds and we've been fine with the collar & leash just for going out to potty, but you'll get 20 responses that say never ever use a collar.

| Are you using a collar or a harness? I would definetly use a harness..then if you do have to tug on it a bit, its not at their neck. I have to leash Daisy, or she runs. But this is because she is new to us. Eventually I may be able to let her off.... BUt when we go outside, especially now that its really cold..she stands still and shakes. WILL NOT GO!! Drives me up the wall......but hey.... anyway, I suggest a harness if you aren't already

| Harness! Right! But if you don't have a fenced-in yard, never take him out without a leash! Never!

| Right now I don't have to use a leash with Brie bc she practically won't leave my side. I think that may be bc she is stilla puppy. When she gets a little older I may actually have to use a leash so that she doesn't run away.

| It's best to train them on a harness and leash from the time you get them. That way they are used to it and won't object to wearing them.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | If you have a fenced yard and predators aren't a problem, let him loose. I'd just keep an eye on him and not let him stay out too long at night. If there's a chance of him getting out of the yard, don't take it. Even the best-mannered Yorkies can bolt if they see something they want more than you. Eddie goes to the door when he wants out. I let him out and then check in 5 mins. Worst he's done is bring in a muddy bone that he'd buried outside.

| Please don't ever let them off leash, you never know what kind of distraction might be waiting for them and they can take off. My cousin's dog was regularly let outside to do his business without a leash , recently got hit by a truck and died immediately. Please please please, keep them leashed, better safe then sorry.
