Question Importing a Hungarian Puppy - Is Devil's of York Trustworthy?

Hi All,

I am new to the forum and have had such fun going through all of the threads and learning so many interesting tips. I have a 6 year old Yorkie named Fitch and have been searching for the perfect little girl to add to the family. I have finally found her and it turns out she is in Hungary. I have been dealing with Katalin Szakacs (under Barbara Szakacs email) and she has been wonderfully helpfully/very communicative, though there is a language barrier. Does anyone have experience with this breeder and sending money via Western Union to Hungary? I am doing my best due diligence to ensure I am not being taken for a ride

Any thoughts, experience, insight is greatly appreciated!!

Best Regards,

Joel

I wish I could be of more help. But just be very careful, have you been able to find anything about them online? Do they have a website? Wishing you the best.

This is usually the hallmark of a scam. I would use an escrow service. They hold the money until you receive the dog. There is NO other way I would do it. Further unless I had the money to TRAVEL to Hungary and check the dog out for myself and bring it back myself I would never purchase from another country, state or even county. There are so many scams today I would never take such a risk.

Further there are so many fine, reputable breeders here unless you are breeding for type and need something so specific the lines here in the US don't offer it I would never think of attempting this. It's very risky. Think how hard that type of plane trip is on us in the cabin. Now you take a tiny little dog or worse a puppy and fly them in baggage! Especially with Yorkie hypoglycemia issues. I would never attempt it.

Anyway that's just my opinion, I am sure others with far more experience and knowledge will be along shortly.

I would agree w the above posters and sending money Western Union. We have seen scams here involving sending money Western Union for a pup.

Also, if you are purchasing a dog from a Hungarian breeder, I would be prepared to fly over to pick up the pup and fly back w it. I would not ship a dog from Hungary to US alone. It is a long flight, probably w changes in flight.

I was just curious as to what attracted you to a Hungarian breeder and this line. Is there a line from this country that might hold the same criteria?

Default Thanks!

Thanks all for posting, definitely appreciate all feedback. It seems many people even in this forum community have dogs from Hungary and this specific breeder, though the posts regarding them are a few years old. Would love to know if someone has actually dealt with them directly recently.

I also am going to look at some pups in person this weekend about an hour away!

Thanks again everyone!

Your last post sent me looking. Here is a thread I found http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...Devil%27s+York

Maybe you would want to PM some of the ppl on this thread who have a pup from the line or ask about the line in the breeder's section.

Hope this helps.

Hmm..

I agree with the other posters. Not to say that she isn't a wonderful breeder and business woman, but I wouldn't take the chance. Especially since there are alot of breeders and rescue sites here in the U.S. that you can visit and play and interact with the females so you'll know for sure which is the right one for you.

Good luck!

A few years ago, my husbands job took us to Japan for 3 yrs. At the time we had cats & birds. I went through the process to fly with my pets from Dallas to Tokyo where my husband was to pick me up and we would drive the additional 10 hrs to final destination. First of all, if the weather is warm, the airlines won't take them because of the heat... then there is making sure there is enough food and water in the kennel to last for the duration of the flight. I went through this in the month of August and let me just say that I ended up driving with my animals to San Francisco from south Texas because there were no airports that could accomodate us due to the excruciating heat that the country was having... I know I felt like a 'sucker' (expense, time, etc) but I love my animals and wanted to make sure they were properly taken care of. We all arrived safely in Tokyo and I could add more. But to get to the bottom line. I WOULD NEVER PUT A PUPPY THROUGH THAT KIND OF ORDEAL. It is extremely stressful for the animal. Please look at breeders here in this country. Also, I would never just send money off to someone without ever seeing the pup or the pup's parents. Rethink this situation please.

I 100% agree. Sounds weird and I wouldn't do it. I have a personal rule for very good reason that I'll never ever buy a dog that has to be "shipped" to me and I MUST meet both parents and the litter in person before I'd decide on a dog or give any deposite at all.

Gidget you are TERRIFIC as usual LOL! What gorgeous dogs on that website, Joel, I can see how you would be interested.

If you do choose to go that route I'd make sure I was talking to the actual folks and not someone masquerading as them. I'd also try to pay them by bank transfer or PayPal so it can be traced to an account so you know prove who you paid. Western Union cash is untraceable. Bank transfer is very common in the EU and shouldn't be a problem.

If you go this route I would not ship a puppy. I'd purchase an adult no less than 18 months and no less than 5 LB /2.3 KG.

You may also want to check out Yorkshire Terrier Club of America
Anyway you go I wish you the best of luck on your new doggie.

My boys are Devils of York on their sire's side, as you may have read in the linked thread.

Make sure you are dealing directly with Devils of York and not some unknown person who is claiming to have one of their dogs.

If I were looking for a pet and not a show dog, I would seek out a breeder here in the US to avoid the potential problems and to have a resource readily available if something goes wrong.
