Yorkie Talker | We are newbies to the Yorkie World. We are new Yorkie parents. Alphie is 15 wks. old. We have had other pets, all of which have been female. Alphie, however is male. So we have a few questions. 1. at what age is grooming a good idea.? He is getting pretty shaggy, but we are afraid he will look like "a big boy" instead of a puppy. 2. he is nipping and biting while playing. We have tried everything but spraying water at him. We can't bring ourselves to do it. Just seems mean, to us. A firm "NO", the alternate toy, and ignoring all seem to work temporarily. Any suggestions? |

| Hi and welcome to YT and to the world of Yorkie's. You are wise to just train your baby to a negative sound and alternative plaything. Your best friend with any new puppy are any articles and books you can read(many here in our Library section) on positive-reward obedience training and behavior modification. This will train your baby to learn to focus on you, look to you only for leadership, learn impulse control and learn to listen and obey what you say. It keeps their minds busy and you really, really bond in the process. It will buy you a lot of fun, a great well-behaved but fun-loving dog and a lifetime of pleasant companionship rather than some of the horror stories you hear about. Love, nothing but positive rewards, persistence and patience in the training process keeps your dog happily and proudly involved in his training and you - and if he is like my Tibbe, he will always love the working, training part of your relationship. Best wishes to you and your new one!

YT Addict | if it's working "temporarily" then that usually means it's working, just make sure you keep doing every single time, he will get it! same with housetraining... i've learned! they seem to have it, but then when you start giving them freedom they start pottying in the house again when you let up... it'll take your little guy a good year to know everything! and even after that you'll find lots of things to teach him! Funny he's a male and you named him Alphie... "Alpha" Male! Good luck with him!

| Hello and welcome to you and Alphie. It sounds like you have a good start in training. Love and persistence will eventually train Alphie. They are smart little terroriers so persistence is the key. With Yorkies always brush every day to get the snags out and brushing their teeth is very important. I wash Buster's face every day and his stomach also every day so his skin does not get irritated from his urine. Also check his butt and keep that hair short so you do not have any hanging chads. Make sure Alphie has had all his vaccinations before taking him to a groomer. Congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of Yorkies!
